
Tetris at 35,000 Feet: Airlines Reshape Business Class to Fit More Seats
The focus was once on complete commonality across fleets. Now, more airlines seem willing to add cost and complexity to squeeze in more business class seats.
Business class remains where most full-service carriers make most of their money. As a result, airlines have long sought to maximize revenue by offering a product that keeps their most lucrative (and often most informed) customers from moving to a rival with a better seat.
On twin-aisle widebody aircraft, direct aisle access for every passenger is critical for any serious international airline choosing new seats.
Airlines are now in the position where a seatmaker's ability to squeeze an extra two seats compared with their nearest competitor is a dealmaker — or dealbreaker.
The challenge for seatmakers starts with aircraft shape: Each widebody has slightly different dimensions. While the cabin floor appears fairly rectangular in 2D, curved sidewalls and fuselage tapering turn it into a complex 3D puzzle.
To make the most of these 3D shapes, seatmakers are doubling down on their focus to optimize seats for specific aircraft cabins.
Constraints such as the position of the seat track supports, the point at which the fuselage tapers at the front of the cabin, and the position of lavatories and galleys must all be considered.
The most immediately visible of these is the customized version of Recaro's R7 seat for the Airbus A330. Its core market focuses on retrofitted A330ceo aircraft and new-build A330neos.
Here, Recaro is bumping out the curve of the window-adjacent seat and footwell significantly. The company is also straightening what was a lightly angled stagger to better optimize the A330's narrower fuselage.

Optimization, But at a Cost
Less visible but no less impressive is Thompson Aero Seating's updated A350 and 787 version of its Vantage XL seat, the original version of which is seen at Australian flag carrier Qantas and many other operators.
Rather confusingly, it is called the Vantage XL+, a name it previously used for the doored suite version of the XL product.

Here, the Vantage XL product was previously optimized for the narrower A330, and with the new version Thompson is adapting the center section with a larger footwell and more knee space. This is enabled by the extra inches it has to work with on the wider A350 and 787 fuselages.
There is, of course, a cost to all of this optimization: both literal in terms of seat development, but also in terms of a reduction in parts commonality.
There is also an increase in production, certification, maintenance, and parts supply chain costs. But it seems that, for a growing number of airlines and their seatmakers, the result is worth it.

Putting these 4 in a Stocks and Shares ISA gives exposure to over 1,000 companies at a 10.6% discount!
Those with a Stocks and Shares ISA will be familiar how it can be badly affected by uncontrollable events. In recent weeks, President Trump's erratic approach to tariffs has caused turmoil for global stock markets. And with so much uncertainty, it's hard to know who the winners and losers will be. That's why, at times like these, I think it's a good idea to try and spread risk over as many investments as possible. But that's easier said than done. For example, how many is the 'correct' number of stocks to own? One way of achieving a diversified portfolio — with the minimum of effort — is to buy an investment trust. And I've found four that, between them, have positions in around 1,000 companies. I say 'approximately' because some of their investments are in other trusts, and information about how many stocks these own isn't readily available. Many of the stocks are privately-owned, which means they are less affected by stock market volatility. Despite this, it's inevitable there will be some overlap. For example, Alliance Witan (LSE:ALW), Caledonia Investments and The Bankers Investment Trust all own Microsoft shares. And because these three trusts trade at a discount to their net asset value, they are – on paper at least — undervalued. However, it should be pointed out that discounts are common with these types of funds, especially ones that have a large exposure to unquoted companies. These holdings can be difficult to value as there isn't an active market for their shares. I also think it's worth noting that the four share an impressive record of increasing their dividends for 58 consecutive years! The largest on the list is Alliance Witan. Following a merger with a rival in 2024, it became a member of the FTSE 100. The trust has a simple investment objective, which is to achieve long-term capital and income growth. At 31 May, it held 229 stocks with a market-cap of £4.7bn. Its three biggest holdings were Microsoft, Amazon and Visa. Some investment trusts can have relatively high levels of debt which makes them vulnerable to rising borrowing costs. But Alliance Witan's gross gearing was only 8.4% at the end of 2024. Its target is 7.5-12.5%. Over the past eight years or so, it's delivered a healthy return. From 1 April 2017 to 31 May, its share price increased by 105.6%. During the five years to the end of May, it went up 76.3%. However, because it mainly invests in global equities it's not immune from stock market volatility. And over the past five years, the trust's been marginally outperformed by the MSCI ACWI index, the benchmark against which it measures itself. But with over 200 positions in 11 sectors, spread across four continents, it's well diversified. On this basis, I think Alliance Witan's a stock that those looking to follow a risk-averse strategy could consider. As for the other three, I'd have to do more research before deciding whether to part with my cash but, in principle, I believe investment trusts are an excellent way of spreading risk. Accenture is giving consulting a new name as it doubles down on AI: 'reinvention services'
CEO Julie Sweet said Accenture is doubling down on AI in an earnings call on Friday. She said the firm is creating a new business division focused on AI called "reinvention services." Sweet said that while bookings were down, revenue was up, and Accenture sees future potential in AI. After more than 35 years in the business, Accenture is giving consulting a new name: "reinvention services." The global consulting firm reported its earnings on Friday, highlighting a generally positive performance for the third fiscal quarter of 2025. The firm reported revenue of $17.7 billion, an 8% increase from this time last year. While new bookings were down 6% compared to the third quarter in 2024, Accenture CEO Julie Sweet told CNBC on Friday that the firm was "really pleased" with its bookings and that demand for its services could be seen in its revenue. Sweet said on the earnings call that AI is the firm's strongest bet for creating new demand and that to maximize AI's potential, the firm is consolidating its strategy, consulting, song, technology, and operations services into a single unit known as "reinvention services," starting September 1. "What we're going to do now is make it even easier to bring those solutions, embed data and AI, so we can really scale across our client base and into new markets using our reinvention services," Sweet told CNBC. What consultants do sometimes needs to be explained, and "reinvention services" is no exception. In both her CNBC interview and the earnings call on Friday, Sweet shared several examples of the company's AI-powered reinvention work, which — following its reorganization — the firm will be able to execute more efficiently, she said. In one example, she said Accenture is working with Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri to launch the first AI-powered ship in 2025. Sweet told CNBC that the ship will be able to "predict its maintenance, manage its energy use on its own, and talk to the dock" before it arrives at its destination. She said Accenture's work to modernize the manufacturing process for Bel, maker of Laughing Cow cheese, would also fall under this new department, as would its collaboration with Brazilian mining company Vale to expedite environmental licensing and permits. She also said the firm is creating AI-generated 3D avatars of physical products for coffee brands like Nescafé, Dolce Gusto, and Nespresso to reduce the time and cost of developing marketing campaigns, which would also fall under the new reinvention services department. Sweet told CNBC that AI can be a "tool" to help companies navigate the future, but to reap the benefits, it will also need to be "disruptive."
