LG's new AI speeds up product design, testing

Korea Herald01-04-2025

LG Electronics has developed a new manufacturing artificial intelligence system that enables significantly faster and more accurate quality predictions during the product design phase, the company said Thursday.
The new AI system reduces the time required to assess the quality of completed products by up to 99 percent, cuts AI training time by more than 95 percent and lowers memory usage to one-tenth of previous levels, according to LG.
Where it previously took 3 to 8 hours to predict product quality before creating a prototype, the new technology completes the process in under three minutes using AI—eliminating the need for separate simulation stages.
The home appliances giant said it is preparing to launch a web-based platform called Eng.AI (Engineering AI) that will incorporate the new predictive AI technology for product developer use.
'We deliver end-to-end solutions to clients across all stages of manufacturing. AI-based verification technology will not only shorten the product development cycle but also significantly boost development efficiency,' said Jeong Dae-hwa, president of LG Electronics' Manufacturing Engineering Research Institute.
To reinforce the credibility of its new technology, LG said it has submitted a related research paper to the International Conference on Machine Learning, one of the most prestigious global academic conferences in the AI field.
The company plans to first apply the technology internally to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities, starting with component design for home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and TVs, as well as automotive products.
The new technology is also expected to enhance the competitiveness of LG Electronics' smart factory solutions, a business segment the company actively expanded last year.
The research institute projected that orders for smart factory solutions from clients outside the LG Group will surpass 400 billion won ($297 million) in 2024 — marking a more than 30 percent increase from the previous year.
LG said it aims to expand its smart factory client base beyond home appliances to include semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and chemicals to grow the smart factory solutions business into a trillion-won-level portfolio by 2030.
LG's smart factory solutions support a wide range of manufacturing functions, including production system design, real-time monitoring, operational optimization, and big data and generative AI-based process and equipment management, the company said.

Posco becomes first steelmaker inducted into World Steel Dynamics Hall of Fame

Korea's steel-to-battery-materials conglomerate, Posco Group, announced Thursday that it has become the first global steelmaker to be permanently inducted into the hall of fame by World Steel Dynamics, a prominent US-based steel industry consultancy. The recognition was awarded to Posco Holdings during the Global Steel Dynamics Forum held Wednesday in New York. The event was attended by key industry leaders, including Posco Group Chair Chang In-hwa, US Steel CEO David Burritt, Cleveland-Cliffs Chair Lourenco Goncalves and Tata Steel CEO T.V. Narendran, along with around 500 industry officials. The hall of fame honor recognizes Posco's achievement of ranking first in WSD's global competitiveness assessment for 15 consecutive years since 2010. The consultancy evaluates 35 steelmakers worldwide based on 23 key performance indicators, including technological innovation, production output, cost efficiency and financial soundness. "Maintaining the No. 1 position in overall competitiveness for 15 years is by no means a short journey. I express my heartfelt gratitude for the dedication and hard work of all Posco members," Chang said. "I believe this hall of fame induction reflects the support and encouragement of the global steel industry." During his visit to New York, Chang shared Posco's vision to enhance its global leadership and promote Korea–US cooperation in manufacturing, focusing on artificial intelligence and the energy sector. At the forum, he presented the group's strategy to evolve into a leading future-oriented materials company, highlighting initiatives such as developing AI-powered smart factories. The previous day, Chang also participated in a roundtable hosted by The Korea Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cooperation between Korea and the US. There, he discussed topics including Korea–US collaboration in steelmaking, secondary battery materials and energy, in the context of rising geopolitical uncertainty, the company said.

[Graphic News] Seoul climbs to No. 15 in global city rankings

Seoul has ranked No. 15 in a global index of 1,000 cities, climbing 26 spots from No. 41 last year. The 2025 Global Cities Index, compiled by Oxford Economics, evaluates cities based on five categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance. New York topped the list, followed by London and Paris in second and third place, respectively, with Tokyo being the only Asian city in the top 10, ranking No. 9. Out of the five categories, Seoul ranked 5th globally — and highest in Asia — in 'human capital' thanks to its strong universities and global firms like Samsung and LG, placed No. 18 in 'economy' amid slowing gross domestic product and employment growth, and came in at No. 129 for 'quality of life,' No. 147 for 'governance' and No. 514 for 'environment.' Other Korean cities in the overall rankings include Busan (No. 281), Jeonju (No. 314), Daegu (No. 321), Cheongju (No. 332) and Daejeon (No. 341). don@
