Rietondale residents distraught over police inaction
Rietondale residents have expressed growing frustration over what they describe as ongoing safety concerns being ignored by the metro police, despite repeated calls for intervention.
According to Ward 84 Councillor Anru Meyer, there have been several events happening in the area without the metro's permission, and a lack of police visibility is making things worse.
'For over a month now, lack of TMPD visibility has led to by-laws being violated in parts of the suburb, such as Rietondale Park and the property on the corner of Nico Smith Street and Codonia Avenue.'
He said the Hardy Muller circle and CR Swart Drive have become taxi ranks, with taxis stopping anywhere on the corner of Nico Smith Street, where buses and trucks need to come to an instant stop.
'These violations make it harder for truck drivers who need to stop [trucks] of more than 15 tons.'
He said vagrants are setting up camp at the park, making open fires, and on weekends, events are hosted at the park without the Joint Operations Committee's (JOC) approval.
'Delivery vehicles, trucks and taxis also use it for parking.'
He said recently, a sports event was hosted at the park, and spectators were drinking alcohol on the sidewalks and playing loud music.
'When we call the metro police to assist, they are not available, and if they do arrive, nothing is done about the situation they are called for.
'The TMPD has been contacted numerous times on these issues, but to no avail. Emails have been sent with no response.'
Meyer said the lack of TMPD visibility has affected the lives of the whole ward, not only Rietondale.
He said crime has increased in parts of the suburb and urged for more patrols in Rietondale Park, especially over the weekends.
'In Rietondale last week, a bin was also stolen. There was a recent cable theft in Villieria, which was also not responded to.'
He said the TMPD must respond to complaints when there are events without JOC approval.
Meyer added that he open space on the corner of Nico Smith and Codonia should be constantly patrolled by by-law enforcement and be cleared regularly.
Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the metro had not been informed of the events that took place on the reported days.
'The city was not informed of any planned events taking place at the facility on those days.'
The TMPD was contacted for a response to the complaints.
Spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said the issues raised were operational matters, which are not discussed publicly.
'As police, we do not discuss operational plans in public as they are confidential and classified. We don't announce when we are planning to conduct our operations,' he said.

Two people were held for questioning in the case, which initially caused alarm when staff alerted police on Saturday that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage. But investigators now believe that the so-called "marriage" was staged, with the girl's mother reportedly saying that she wanted her to feel like a Disney "princess" for the day. "The event turned out to be a staged event, with the guests themselves extras" invited to be part of the stunt, deputy prosecutor Alexandre Verney said. "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They hired Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding," he told AFP. Four people were arrested and taken into custody, and the questioning of two of them -- suspected of fraud and money laundering -- was extended on Saturday evening. The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national, found that "she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts," the prosecutor's office said. According to the Le Parisien daily, which first reported the incident, a man had several weeks previously hired the Disneyland Paris complex for a sum of 130,000 euros ($150,000) for several hours before it opened to the public. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared wearing high heels on Saturday morning, barely able to stand in the elaborate footwear, and they alerted the authorities, it said. The paper said the man who organised the event had submitted false documents concerning his identity and Disneyland filed a complaint. Manhunt underway for suspects who fatally shot a man
The police have launched a manhunt for suspects who fatally wounded a man and injured another one at Riba-Cross, Madiseng, on Friday, 20 June 2025. The two wounded suspects were able to make their way to the hospital, but one sustained his injuries and died. The police were immediately summoned to the hospital for investigations. Initial investigations revealed that the victim was driving with another male in a taxi association vehicle when they were attacked and shot by unknown people. The motive behind the shooting is unknown at the moment and investigations are taking place. The police urge anyone who has information or hears about the suspects to contact investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Lesetja Mogotlane on 082 451 7232, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station or the MySAPS App. The Ehlanzeni District's Acornhoek Cluster Crime Prevention Team arrested a 41-year-old suspect for being in possession of suspected stolen property in connection with a truck hijacking incident that occurred in Bushbuckridge on 20 June 2025. According to reports, the driver of the truck was on his way to deliver tyres to Bushbuckridge Tyre Mart when the suspect approached and pointed a gun at him. The suspect forcefully entered the truck and forced the driver to drive towards a scrap yard along the R40, where he was then directed to a different location where the suspect offloaded 36 tyres from the truck. After the incident, the driver was told to leave and he subsequently drove to the nearest police station to open a case. The following day, the police received a tip-off from Netstar Tracking Company regarding the possible location of the tyres. 'The team operationalised the information, which led them to a residence in Maribishing, outside Bushbuckridge. Upon arrival, officers noticed a pile of tyres stacked near the garage.' 'A man at the scene, who claimed ownership of the tyres, stated that they had been delivered to him by unidentified individuals,' the police statement read. Investigations led to the arrest of for possession of suspected stolen property and has also been linked to the truck hijacking case. A total of 26 tyres, valued at R67,140.00, were recovered. The suspect is expected to appear before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate's Court on Monday, 23 June 2025. Mooiplaats home invasion ends in fatal shooting
A home invasion in Mooiplaats, East of Pretoria, on Friday, June 20, culminated in a shooting between security guards and suspects. According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the events began when a resident heard his dogs barking outside and went to investigate at around 21:30. 'The man was approached by five adult African men armed with pangas,' Van Dyk stated. The men then attacked the victim. 'The suspects also forced entry into the homes of other tenants, attacking them and robbing them of a television and a cell phone. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.' While police did not disclose the extent of the victims' injuries, social media posts suggested they were severe. According to Van Dyk, private security in the area tracked the suspects into nearby bushes. 'Seeing that they were surrounded, the suspects allegedly attacked the security guards with the pangas. The guards retaliated, shooting two of the suspects. One died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital.' Van Dyk confirmed that police are investigating a case of house robbery, murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of house break-in tools.
