Now, a robot can self-detect crop diseases and spray pesticides, courtesy IIT KGP

At IIT Kharagpur's Mechanical Engineering department, a remarkable innovation in smart farming has taken shape: a machine that will deploy pesticides after detecting plant diseases.
'This breakthrough aims to address key challenges faced by farmers and enhance agricultural efficiency,' said Professor Dilip Kumar Pratihar. Under his leadership, a team of PhD and project students has successfully developed a semi-automatic tracked mobile manipulator cum agricultural robotic system.
Recognizing its potential impact, an Indian patent has been granted to Professor Pratihar, Pradeep Nahak, Atanu Jana, and their team.
The roots of this innovation trace back to 2018 when Prof Pratihar first introduced the concept during his invited lecture at the National Seminar on 'Trends and Applications of ICT in Agriculture (TRACT),' organized by C-DAC Kolkata.
'The diverse nature of agricultural terrains—neither entirely smooth nor completely rough—demands a unique solution. That's when I proposed the idea of a Tracked Mobile Manipulator, designed to adapt seamlessly to such environments. This system, equipped with a serial manipulator resembling a human arm, was envisioned to bring precision and intelligence to the field of agricultural robotics,' he said.
While drone-based farming tools have gained popularity, they often face limitations in capturing clear images of plant leaves.
The forced draught from their propellers tends to disturb the leaves, resulting in blurry or noisy data. To solve this, the IIT Kharagpur team developed a ground-based alternative.
'Addressing this gap with thoughtful precision, the team designed the Tracked Mobile Manipulator. Unlike aerial systems, this robot employs stable, camera-based image analysis to accurately detect plant diseases, followed by the targeted, automatic spraying of suitable pesticides,' the professor explained.
The project has been supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, and the robot is being manufactured by the OEM TECHNIDO.
It aims to reduce farmers' exposure to harmful chemicals, minimize crop loss, and improve food quality.
With this innovation, India takes a bold leap toward a future where cutting-edge robotics and traditional farming wisdom come together.

Joining the discussion are global leaders in the field, including Professor Annalu Waller OBE (Professor of Computer Science at the University of Dundee), Christopher Patnoe, (Head of Accessibility and Disability Inclusion for EMEA at Google), Jess Hider (Senior Technical Designer at Imporium) and Professor Cathy Holloway (co-founder and Academic Director of the Global Disability Innovation Hub, UCL). The event will also feature live exhibits of digital assistive technologies to help people with disabilities live independent lives.

The landmark Structural Heart Innovation event, held at Meril Academy, Vapi (Gujarat) from June 13–15, brought together over 150 Indian interventional cardiologists along with cardiac imaging expert and international stalwarts, including Prof. Ottavio Alfieri ('Father of mitral valve repair'), Prof. Francesco Maisano, and Prof. Agricola, joining global pioneers in edge-to-edge mitral valve repair. Meril is currently the world's leading TAVI group following the success of Myval THV and first Indian company to introduce a TEER system, placing the country firmly on the map as an innovator in transcatheter heart valve therapies (with both replacement and repair technology platforms). MyClip introduction demonstrates India's growing capabilities in structural heart solutions and reflects Meril's commitment to accessible cutting-edge cardiac care. MyClip TEER System is designed for patients suffering from severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR) who are at high surgical risk due to pre-existing issues like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, advanced age, physical frailty, enlarged or weak heart, and patients with kidney, lung and liver problems. MR, particularly if untreated, has a devastating mortality rate—over 50% of patients may not survive without timely intervention, and 1-year mortality can be as high as 57%. The MyClip TEER System enables precise closure of the mitral valve flaps, effectively preventing the backward flow of purified blood into the lungs. The procedure is minimally invasive, & takes approximately one hour, and allows patients to return home within 3–5 days. After discharge, patients can resume daily activities like walking and non-strenuous work within a short period post the procedure. According to the landmark COAPT Study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), patients receiving device-based therapy for mitral regurgitation experienced significantly better outcomes compared to those receiving standard medical treatment. Within 24 months, the hospitalization rate for heart failure was reduced to 35.8% per patient-year in the device group, compared to 67.9% in the control group. Additionally, mortality within the same period was notably lower in the device group, at 29.1%, compared to 46.1% in the control group. Currently, approximately 150 TEER (Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair) procedures are performed annually in India, with the majority of patients falling in the younger age group (30 – 60). These statistics bring to light a pressing need for early and effective intervention in younger demographics. The launch of MyClip TEER System marks a transformative moment for structural heart therapy in India. Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) therapy has shown significant success over traditional Guideline Directed Medical Therapy (GDMT). MyClip represents a major step forward in India's cardiovascular treatment landscape. In his inaugural speech, Sanjeev Bhatt, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Meril Life Sciences, said, 'In India, around 1.5 million people are known to have severe mitral regurgitation. Of these at least 1.2 million are post myocardial infarction (MI or a heart attack) or due to heart failure. Introduction of the MyClip TEER system marks a pivotal shift and we're witnessing early adoption. BENGALURU: Defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has become the first Indian firm to fully acquire technology of a launch vehicle. HAL secured the transfer of technology (ToT) for 's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) at a cost of Rs 511 crore. Unlike the manufacturing contract of PSLV - shared between HAL and L&T - the SSLV has been fully offered to HAL. The company will own the rocket, build it, market it, and launch it independently. The selection process involved two stages. Out of nine applicants, six were shortlisted in the first round. A committee led by former principal scientific adviser to govt of India, Prof Vijaya Raghavan, and co-headed by former Isro director Suresh, then evaluated the techno-commercial bids of three firms. All were technically qualified but HAL emerged as the highest bidder at Rs 511 crore, IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka said. While HAL submitted an independent bid, the other two finalists were consortia - one led by Bengaluru-based Alpha Design and the other by Bharat Dynamics Ltd from Hyderabad. "Payment will be done in phases. ToT will take two years. HAL will make at least two SSLV prototypes with complete help and hand-holding by Isro and after two years, they will be on their own. The initial ToT agreement will be for the first two years and then another contract will be signed between HAL and Isro," Goenka said. After the initial two years, HAL will function independently and can even modify the rocket design or choose new partners. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A formal contract involving NewSpace India Ltd (Nsil), HAL, Isro and IN-SPACe will be signed soon. Nsil will manage the commercial aspects while IN-SPACe, in collaboration with Isro centres, will oversee the technology transfer. Barenya Senapati, HAL's director of finance, said the win aligned with HAL's broader goal of significantly expanding its space portfolio. He assured the new programme would not affect HAL's other operations. Regarding liability for rocket launches, Goenka noted that, under international norms, the state bore primary responsibility. "It is up to govt to decide how much of the liability will remain with the state and how much will be transferred to HAL. The company will comply with applicable laws once the contract is finalised," he said.
