Saturday Kitchen star shares struggle presenting live show viewers won't notice
EXCLUSIVE: Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt has opened up about all things to do with the hit BBC morning show - from his worst habits, to things he loves and finds most difficult about live TV
Saturday Kitchen star Matt Tebbutt has spilled the secrets of working in live television - and opened up on the toughest part of the job. Despite revealing he relishes the challenge every week on the BBC show, Matt has admitted the crew face a number of challenges in a bid to make the long-running show continue to air smoothly.
The 51-year-old chef has presented the weekend morning food show since 2017, when he took over from James Martin. And he has admitted that the crew are "like family" and are often met with many challenges, meaning they have to rehearse "a lot" despite it looking like they "wing it" at times.
Speaking to the Mirror, Matt revealed the hardest part of his role: "On Saturday Kitchen, I have to cook a decent looking dish while interviewing the main guest and with the production team shouting in my ear about timings," he said.
"My wife always says she'd struggle with any one of those things at a time, so she's quite impressed I can do all three at once. It can also be tough to keep it all fun and light, unless the guest is on board."
And he also confessed he is often told his "worst habit" on screen is laughing too loud. "I don't put the plates down in the right way," he added. "[I also] pick on Helen when she talks about Rose. I don't pay too much attention to it ideally."
But he explained he loves the "buzz" that comes with it. "At the end of the day live telly is great fun," he added.
"It takes me back to working in busy London kitchens, you get the same sort of adrenaline rush. But luckily I don't have to work double shifts anymore for little or no reward!"
Matt was speaking ahead of this year's Smoke and Fire Festival. The event will be at Ascot Racecourse on July 5-6, and at Promenade Park in Maldon Essex on August 16-17.
Matt will once again be in attendance, this time featuring on both weekends. He admitted he is looking forward to being involved again, calling the decision a "no brainer". "The atmosphere's unbeatable," he gushed.
"[It's] a proper gathering of people who love cooking over fire. You don't always get that kind of appreciation or excitement at other events. Also, the other chefs are brilliant — some I've known for years, others I met for the first time last year.
"It's a great place to catch up, share ideas, pinch a few tricks off each other – and there's always something new to discover – a new rub, a new dish, a new drink."
And he told festival goers to expect a "bigger and better" experience. "The team have promised us more food, more fire, and more variety," he said. "There's a strong South American focus this year and a partnership with Europe's largest Taco and Tequila festival - The Tacover – and my travels to Argentina really opened my eyes to that part of the world.
"You can expect plenty of live demos, chances to chat with the chefs, proper smoky flavours, and a bit of theatre too."
For his part, Matt revealed he will be bringing a number of his signature dishes as well as cooking some festival specials.
What is he most looking forward to? "That moment when someone takes a bite and their eyes light up. You can't beat that. Oh — and sneaking off to try everyone else's food, obviously!"
It's expected that over 5,000 burgers will be served across the festivals, really putting the palate to the test. There is also The festival's infamous wing challenge, The World Butcher Wars and British Open Freestyle BBQ Championships on show.
Tickets for the event are currently on sale.

Legendary BBC presenter quietly bows out after almost 50 years of TV hosting
BBC and ITV sports presenting icon Steve Ryder gave his last broadcast on Sunday as he presented the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park for ITV4 Sports presenter Steve Ryder has announced his retirement from broadcasting after an impressive 48-year career. The 75-year-old covered major sporting fixtures for both the BBC and ITV over the course of his time on the air. On Sunday, the star was broadcasting from the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire when he revealed he would be hanging up his microphone. He was covering the event for ITV4 when he announced the news of his departure from the screen. A montage of clips was then shared showing drivers including Lando Norris, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jenson Button and David Coulthard all bidding farewell to the broadcaster. Over the years, he has hosted Sportsnight and Sports Personality of the Year, as well as the BBC's coverage of every Olympic Games between 1988 and 2004. He departed the BBC in 2005 and joined ITV where he presented coverage of Formula One, as well as the football and rugby World Cups. His final appearance proved to be a muted exit, but he has previously explained why he decided the time had come to quit. He told the Daily Mail: "The biggest emotion as you get into the last two minutes of something like that is, 'For God's sake, don't c**k it up.' "Because you'd be thinking about that for the next 20 years. I've probably outstayed my welcome. I've been hugely lucky with the places that the career has taken me. But it's close to 50 years now, so the cracks are showing." Steve famously used to present Match of the Day and was left miffed when he was replaced by Gary Lineker as the main host - admitting he had cut the former footballer out of his life. The beef began when Gary said in 2015 that he though the R&A as 'pompous' and accused them of feeling like 'superior beings'. This, in turn, provoked a furious reaction from Steve. He told the Golf Paper: "I hold Gary Lineker in the highest regard as a football presenter, but his reflections on his experiences as a golf presenter need a huge reality check. For four years, the R&A and most other observers knew that Gary was the wrong man in the wrong job. Hazel Irvine has just delivered once again at the Open presentation skills of the highest quality. Not many people can do that and Gary certainly came up short. "Roger Mosey, the head of sport, knew Gary was a golf fanatic and was further encouraged by Gary apparently volunteering for the Masters vacancy within a few minutes of my exit from Television Centre. "But if Mosey thought long and hard before offering Gary the golf job, it's even more baffling. Match of the Day is scripted and rehearsed. Golf presentation, especially at Augusta, is seat of the pants, unpredictable and demanding." Away from sport, Steve also won praise for being open about a battle against prostate cancer after he was diagnosed with the disease in October 2023. He underwent emergency surgery which stopped the cancer from spreading. He previously told BBC Breakfast: "They took one look and said, 'We're going to operate in two weeks'. "No messing around. We did Brands Hatch for ITV on the Sunday and I had the operation on the Thursday. So it slotted into the schedule quite nicely!"

Stephanie Davis confirms split from boyfriend five months after giving birth and admits she's 'in shock'
The Hollyoaks star had fuelled speculation she split from five-month-old son Samuel's dad when she snubbed him on Father's Day Hollyoaks star Stephanie Davis has confirmed her separation from boyfriend Joe McKalroy after a week of speculation. The actress, 32, had been dating Joe since 2022 and they welcomed baby son Samuel five months ago. Last week it was reported that the romance had come to an end after a message Stephanie shared on Father's Day that didn't mention the father of her child. Rumours went into overdrive after further comments from the former Celebrity Big Brother star, and on Sunday she took to Instagram to share a huge life update with fans. She revealed they have gone their separate ways. Stephanie also told followers she's now raising Samuel as a single parent, but didn't give details about the reason for the split. She said: "Never in a million years did I think I'd be writing this. I've been left with no choice but to address the rumours." She continued: "This has come as a complete shock and has been an incredibly painful and unexpected time. Just four months after having a baby - one of the most vulnerable and emotional times in a woman's life - I've found myself facing this chapter on my own." The TV personality then hinted at her previous relationship with Jeremy McConnell, who she shares a seven-year-old son with. She added: "After everything I've been through in the past, I truly believed I'd finally found my happiness - something secure and lasting. But that, heartbreakingly, hasn't been the case. "I'm grateful for the years we had because, without us, I wouldn't have my Samuel. Who will always be my priority. "Right now, I'm focusing on healing, protecting my peace, and doing the best I can - being there for my two beautiful boys. Thank you to those who've reached out - your kindness has meant more than I can say." Earlier, Stephanie had shared a post marking five months since Samuel's birth, as reports the Mirror, and again she did not mention Joe. She said: "This Day 5 months ago you came into this world. Only 5 months old today ( I know he's still a tiny baby). It's crazy to think he's not been out in this world as long as he was in my tummy. "From nearly losing you in the beginning, the worst pregnancy, I couldn't walk with pelvic girdle trapped in the house for months and months, a terrible birth, then lifting doing every night feed lifting after a C-section, then your breathing episodes which was the scariest time of my life, it's been a long hard traumatic road. "But here you are thriving my miracle my rainbow... my world... everything I do is for you and your brother and I will always be here every single day for you, cheering you on." She added: "I'm so lucky getting to watch you grow every single day by your side into the most beautiful little boy. It So sad I don't have many photos of me and you bar selfies I've taken, but from now on I'll make sure we have many together. You will always be my priority. I love you baby." Romeo Beckham's ex Kim Turnbull delivers savage dig after split and family rift
Romeo Beckham's ex Kim Turnbull, who he split from earlier this year amid rumours of a rift in his family, has opened up about dealing with being in the spotlight Kim Turnbull has opened up about being in the spotlight after making headlines over her relationship with Romeo Beckham. Her latest comments come after it was revealed that the former couple had split up just weeks ago. It was announced earlier this month that Kim, 25, had separated from Romeo, 22, after seven months together. It was suggested that they were on good terms though, with a source telling the Mirror at the time: "They split a few weeks ago and it's all amicable and they are still friends." The news of their break-up came amid ongoing rumours of tension in his family. Kim's relationship with Romeo - who is the son of Victoria Beckham and David Beckham - was previously blamed for the alleged rift in recent months. Amid the rumours earlier this year, it was suggested that Kim had once been romantically linked to Romeo's brother Brooklyn Beckham, 26. It's previously been reported that in a now-deleted post, youngest brother Cruz Beckham, 20, said the pair "never dated" and Kim is since understood to have herself dismissed the suggestion in a statement. Kim has addressed dealing with the attention in an interview with the Sunday Times, published this week. The interview is said to have taken place just hours after the news of the DJ's split from model Romeo broke just a few weeks ago. Speaking about dealing with being in the spotlight, Kim suggested that it is expected. She continued: "There are situations that you find yourself in that present you with new aspects, but at the same time I think it has always been something that I've been around and seen, so I just take it day by day and try to focus on the positives." She added: "Sometimes it's difficult to block things out because a lot of the time there are things said that are not necessarily true or necessarily positive, and your instinctive reaction is to want to be like, no, that's not true!" Kim said she's however learned to try to "take it with a pinch of salt". Kim said: "It's definitely tough, whatever it is, when people are saying things about you that aren't necessarily true and, most importantly in my opinion, don't align with your character and your values." She said that despite sometimes wanting to, "you just can't" reply to every comment. The new article comes after Kim appeared to dismiss the suggestion that she had ever dated Brooklyn following the rumours. As reported at the time, she addressed speculation in a post on Instagram earlier this month. In the post, she wrote: "I've avoided speaking on this topic to prevent adding fuel to the fire, however it's come to a point where I feel the need to address it so I can move on. I will not continue to receive harassment or be embarrassed on the basis of lies, to fit a certain narrative." She then seemingly addressed the speculation that she once dated Brooklyn, who is Romeo's older brother. She said: "I have never been romantically involved in ANY capacity at ANY point with the person in question." Kim went on to tell fans: "Nothing between us has occurred further than a school friendship at age 16. I would like to remove myself from the ongoing conversation and set the record straight for the sake of everyone involved." TMZ had previously suggested that she once had a romantic connection to Brooklyn, but said it was "all water under the bridge". Amid rumours of a family rift, the outlet reported that sources said the issue was over Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, questioning whether Kim had "the right intentions" for dating his younger brother Romeo. When it was announced that Kim had split from Romeo, the Daily Mail reported that their relationship had "fizzled out". The outlet suggested that the break-up was "nothing to do" with her being blamed for the alleged family rift, with a source instead saying that Kim and Romeo were simply both "busy" with work and each did "lots of travelling".
