Chhattisgarh High Court gives relief to skill gaming platform SportsBaazi

Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 17 (ANI): The High Court of Chhattisgarh at Bilaspur has granted interim relief to SBN Gaming Network Pvt. Ltd., the operator of SportsBaazi, in response to its legal challenge.
The Court issued an interim directive restraining the petitioner from operating its website within Chhattisgarh. The court ordered the platform to be blocked in the state through 'Gio block.'
However, SportsBaazi remains permitted to function in other parts of India until the next hearing, said the court.
Justice Amitendra Kishore Prasad, presiding over the case, observed that the petitioner's app, which offers 'Rummy,' qualifies as a skill-based gaming platform and is not prohibited under the IT Act or IT Rules. The Court also noted that the app was blocked nationwide without prior notice or an opportunity for the petitioner to be heard, raising concerns over procedural fairness.
Additionally, the ruling highlighted that while betting and gambling fall under List-2 (State List), skill-based gaming is governed by the IT Act, which falls under List-1 (Union List). This distinction suggests that state authorities may not have jurisdiction to impose restrictions on such platforms.
The Court acknowledged that the app's gameplay involves elements of strategy, mutation, and combination, reinforcing its classification as a 'Game of Skill' rather than a 'Game of Chance.'
The company's petition contests a directive dated May 5, 2025, issued by the Inspector General of Police (Technical Service), Chhattisgarh. This directive had instructed telecom and internet providers to restrict access to specific platforms, including SportsBaazi, citing provisions under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act and regional gambling laws.
Represented by Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, the petitioner argued that SportsBaazi operates a legally compliant, skill-based fantasy gaming platform, and that the action taken 'was arbitrary, lacked due process', and extended beyond the territorial jurisdiction of the state. (ANI)

Patna: The principal bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB), the state's disaster management department, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and others in connection with the widespread felling of palm trees in Bihar, which, it is believed, is contributing to a rise in lightning-related deaths. The NGT's principal bench in New Delhi took suo motu cognisance of a news report titled "Are missing palm trees causing more lightning deaths in Bihar", published in TOI on May 29, 2025. "The news item relates to the large-scale felling of toddy-yielding palm trees, which is stated to have contributed to a rise in lightning-related deaths with over 2,000 lives lost since 2016 in Bihar. According to the article, the widespread cutting of palm trees is directly linked to a sharp increase in lightning-related fatalities. It highlights that dozens of towering palm trees are being felled, leading to more frequent lightning strikes that result in deaths. The article notes that after the ban on toddy tapping due to Bihar's prohibition policy, palm trees lost their economic value and have since been widely cut down. Sanguem man loses Rs 3.30L in job scam

Margao: A job scam case was registered at Sanguem police station based on a complaint by Bakar Shaikh, 51, a resident of Bamonsai, Sanguem. On November 12, 2024, unknown individuals contacted Shaikh via Facebook about a lucrative job opportunity in Canada. They sent him a link, followed by a call from an unknown number. The caller instructed Shaikh to send his CV via WhatsApp, which he did, hoping to secure the job. The culprits later demanded Rs 3.3 lakh for processing the job application, which Shaikh paid in instalments before realising he was deceived. A case has been registered under sections 319(2), 318(4), read with 3(5) of the BNS 2023, and section 66-D of the IT Act, which deals with cheating by impersonation using computer resources.
