EXCLUSIVE UB40 star died penniless after 'long and heroic' cancer battle, documents reveal
The saxophonist and songwriter of chart-topping reggae group UB40 died penniless, MailOnline can reveal.
UB40 were the most commercially successful reggae band of all time, selling more than 100million records over a glittering three-decade career.
But in 2011 four of the original line-up were declared bankrupt following a bitter split from frontman Ali Campbell over the band's finances.
They went on to be chased through the courts for unpaid debts and in 2015 were involved in a £250,000 fight over rights to the group's name.
Now probate documents have revealed Brian Travers' estate had a net value of £0 when he died in 2021 after a 'long and heroic' cancer battle. It had a gross value of £1,346, and was only released in May this year.
The will, made in 1999, showed that his fortune would have gone to his wife Lesley, who he met in his late teens. Had she died before him, it would have gone to his daughter Lisa and son James.
Mr Travers died aged 62 at his home in Moseley, Birmingham, surrounded by his family on August 22 2021.
The musician had previously revealed he was facing a second brain tumour operation in two years after suffering a seizure before Christmas of 2020.
A statement from the band said: 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our comrade, brother, founding UB40 member and musical legend, Brian David Travers.
'Brian passed away yesterday evening after a long and heroic battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with Brian's wife Lesley, his daughter Lisa and son Jamie.
'We are all devastated by this news and ask that you respect the family's need for privacy at this time.'
UB40 was formed in 1978 by seven unemployed friends - their name came from Unemployment Benefit Form 40.
Their biggest hit was a cover of Neil Diamond's Red Red Wine, which topped the charts in 1983.
They had further numbers ones with a version of I Got You Babe in 1985 and I Can't Help Falling In Love With You in 1993. ther hits included One In Ten in 1981, Don't Break My Heart in 1985 and 1990 release Kingston Town.
The band also enjoyed two huge number one albums in the UK - Labour of Love in 1983 and 1993's Promises and Lies.
The later insolvency case revolved around the band's record firm and management company DEP International.
Speaking in 2011, former frontman Ali Campbell said the financial battle showed he was right to have left the band, with a spokesperson telling The Telegraph it was 'vindicating both Ali and Mickey Virtue's decision to leave UB40'.
Speaking earlier the same year, he said he had left after his bandmates had not listened to him about the impending ruin.
Mr Campbell said they burned through cash at the height of their fame, including living in five-star hotels.
He said: 'This was my biggest fear when I was with them, that bankruptcy was going to happen and no-one can say I didn't warn them.'
He continued: 'They decided to back the management and not me, I'm still very bitter about it. I was very proud of what I achieved with UB40. It was a band I started, I was with them for 28 years and we made 24 albums. But we were divided and ruled, and this is what happened in the end.
'UB40 have been asset-stripped by the people around them.'
Mr Travers said he had not seen Mr Campbell for eight years in a 2015 interview, despite the pair being best friends growing up at Moseley School of Art and the singer even being best man at his wedding.
The saxophonist revealed had to sell his large Worcestershire home to settle the debts, but said he was no longer bankrupt four years after the court battle.
'By carrying on working we've come through all of that bankruptcy thing that happens to a lot of musicians in their 50s if they get ripped to shreds by accountants who want a better life for themselves,' he told the Birmingham Mail.
But he said he remained happy despite having to downsize his lifestyle - saying he 'wouldn't do it any differently'.
He continued: 'Our son and daughter are now in their 30s and you can only watch one TV and sleep in one bedroom at once.
'I feel like I'm the luckiest guy in Birmingham – I've spent my whole life expressing myself and paying the rent.'
The remaining members of the band faced further financial woes after entering into a legal battle over the use of the name UB40.
Mr Travers, along with most of the original lineup, had been touring under the name. But at the same time, Ali Campbell had been doing the same with bandmates Astro and keyboardist Mickey Virtue.
The fight resulted in a £250,000 legal bill before a resolution had even been reached.
Mr Travers' last performance with the band was at a concert in December 2019 held at the Arena Birmingham.
The band line-up remained the same for nearly three decades until January 2008, when Ali Campbell left the band.
In June 2021 UB40 frontman Duncan Campbell, Ali's brother, announced his retirement from music due to ill health and was replaced by Kioko musician Matt Doyle as the band's lead singer.
Doyle joined the most recent line-up of Robin Campbell, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer, Norman Hassan, Laurence Parry, Tony Mullings, Martin Meredith and Travers.

Champion jam-maker Donna Collins said: 'It's a real disappointment that Meghan is selling a fruit spread, which is what you make when your jam fails. In the jam industry a spread is what we call something that didn't work. 'It can have the best ingredients, but if I had a jam that was too runny, I'd slap a label on it and call it a spread. There's no excuse for this. It should be perfect.' Ms Collins, who owns Jelly Queens jam company and has won more than 40 world championship honours in jam-making competitions, also queried the ingredients in Meghan's spread. The jars, sold in keepsake packaging for £10 or plain for £7, list conventionally grown apricots, dried organic apricots, organic pure cane sugar and fruit pectin. 'Why should she include conventionally grown apricots, which will have used pesticides?' said Ms Collins. 'And why is she using pectin, which is a gelling agent, unless it's because her spread was too runny? Most spreads don't use pectin.' Meghan launched her 'As Ever' brand in April with a raspberry spread, which critics attacked for being ill-suited for spreading on bread or toast. Many fans who jumped online the moment Meghan's 'As Ever' products went up for sale on Friday were disappointed to learn the apricot spread had sold out. Ms Collins added: 'Her apricot spread sold out in minutes, just like her earlier raspberry spread, which may mean they only made a small batch. 'I don't know who's making her spread, but we all know it's not Meghan. It sounds like they really don't know what they are doing.' Maureen Foley, owner of Red Hen Cannery near Montecito, said she suspected Meghan wanted to make a spread to take advantage of marketing opportunities. 'She may be smart trying to fill a niche,' said Ms Foley. 'Spreads can be sweet or savoury, and used on dishes for all meals, so perhaps it's just clever marketing.'

EXCLUSIVE Prince Harry 'will extend olive branch to King Charles and Prince William by inviting them to the next Invictus Games' - but finale is set to clash with Queen's 80th birthday
The Duke of Sussex is to extend an olive branch to the Royal Family by inviting them to the 2027 Invictus Games, the Mail on Sunday can reveal. In the strongest indication yet that Prince Harry is keen for a reconciliation with the King and other senior Royals, it is understood that an emailed invitation will be sent out later this month, followed by a formal invitation. Sources said the timing of the invitation was designed to give the family the best possible chance of attending, given that Charles is known to draw up his schedule up to three years in advance. But the extraordinary move, which could see Harry pictured with the Royal Family for the first time since the late Queen's funeral, has raised eyebrows among some commentators. Ingrid Seward said: 'The King might attend to show support for the Armed Forces and congratulate Harry on the most significant success in his life. 'The only reason the King is wary of associating with his son is that he no longer trusts him not to repeat their private conversations as he has done in the past. This goes for all the working members of the family.' Fellow royal commentator Katie Nicholl added: 'The King absolutely wants a relationship with his youngest son and with his grandchildren. He has an incredible capacity for forgiveness and he wants to be magnanimous in all of this and therefore there's certainly a possibility that the King might consider attending Invictus.' Despite the Royals' previously strong support for Invictus, the invitation – should anyone choose to accept it – is likely to cause some headaches for Royal aides as it involves a major scheduling conflict. The Games are set to open at Birmingham's NEC on July 12, 2027, and will conclude on July 17 – the day Queen Camilla turns 80 – for which there are likely to already be some celebrations planned. It also remains to be seen whether the Duke would risk bringing Meghan and their children Archie, six, and four-year-old Lilibet, to the UK for the event, having previously insisted he could not do so unless the family were offered 'full police protection'. 'Harry has agreed that Invictus should extend an invitation to his family,' a source told The Mail on Sunday. 'Invictus hopes the Royal Family will come along to support the wounded veterans taking part. Harry is hopeful his father will set aside their differences to attend the Invictus Games and support veterans. 'The Royals have always been hugely supportive of Invictus and proud of what Harry has achieved in that arena. This is one olive branch from him which might be reciprocated.' Harry, 40, made it clear in a BBC interview last month that he would welcome a rapprochement with his father and with the wider family, despite acknowledging the hurt caused by his brutally honest memoir, Spare. 'There's no point in continuing to fight any more,' he said. 'Life is precious.' And he added: 'Forgiveness is 100 per cent a possibility because I would like to get my father and brother back.' The Invictus invitations are thought to represent the first time Harry has publicly reached out in a bid to gather his family together. The invitees and the wording of the invitations are said to have been approved by Harry, with the emails being sent to private secretaries at the Palace. The Games are expected to bring significant economic and social benefit to Birmingham. A spokesman for Invictus said: 'No formal invitations have been issued as preparations are in the early stages.'

HUGE football star and manager 'to star on the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing'
Football icon Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is reportedly set to appear on the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing. The former Chelsea and Netherlands striker and ex-England coach, 53, is believed to have signed up to the BBC flagship show, according to The Sun. A source told the publication: 'Jimmy has a huge fanbase from his years playing in the Premier League and is a very likeable character. 'Show producers are always keen to book a retired footballer as it gets footie fans tuning into the series and becoming unlikely fans of the show. 'Jimmy has a competitive edge and is going to get his head in the game.' The father-of-four was a professional player with Leeds and Middlebrough for two decades before he retied in 2008. MailOnline has contacted representatives for Strictly Come Dancing for comment. The rumour comes weeks after Strictly bosses announced the professional lineup for this year's show and revealed there will be two brand new dancers joining. Dianne Buswell, who lifted the glitter ball in December with Chris McCausland, will be joining Nadiya Bychkova, Karen Hauer, Katya Jones, Neil Jones, Nikita Kuzmin, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk and Jowita Przystal in returning to the dance floor this September. They will be joined by Johannes Radebe, Aljaž Škorjanec, Nancy Xu, Lauren Oakley, Michelle Tsiakkas and Vito Coppola who will all take to the floor once more alongside two new stars, who will be announced closer to the time. Amy Dowden, who pulled out in the opening weeks of last year's show due to a foot injury, will also be back on Strictly for 2025, as will Carlos Gu and Kai Widdrington, who didn't have a celebrity partner last year. Despite rumours that he might be making a return after missing out on last year's series, Giovanni Pernice will not be heading back to the ballroom this time around. As well as the pros taking part in the competition itself, all of them will be taking to the floor each week in group routines. 'She has dedicated years to the programme and can't wait to get back in the training room with a new partner in the next coming months.' Following speculation surrounding whether she would axed from the long running series due to being in her 40s, Karen spoke about not being 'threatened' by younger competitors. Indeed, she said performing alongside new joiners makes her feel empowered and she is 'inspired' by the younger generation. In February, she said: 'Of course, Strictly brings in younger female dancers. I'm the longest serving on the show, but new dancers don't threaten me - I watch them and I learn from them.
