Work started on the badly damaged road to Carletonville Graveyard
After years of complaints, the Merafong City Local Municipality has finally started to repair the road to the Carletonville Graveyard.
The road to the graveyard has been getting worse during the past decade. Although there used to be a neat tarred road before, so many potholes have caved in on it that family members who want to go to the graveyard to visit their relatives' graves have started to drive on the side of the road. In some places, even these alternative routes have become so bad that it is difficult to drive there with a normal car.
According to a municipal document from 2024, the municipality has set aside R5.6m to fix this road. The money was received from the National Government through a Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).
The contractor, Rhuone Projects and Plant Hire Pty Ltd, already started at the site about three weeks ago.
Although the municipality did not reply to questions on the exact scope of the work and when it would be completed, a Carletonville councillor, Ben van den Berg, confirmed on Tuesday that work had started on the part of the road closest to the graveyard.
