Google offers secret VIP ‘protection mode' on millions of mobiles for free – it's meant for celebs to avoid being hacked

MILLIONS of phone owners can take advantage of a special "protection" mode used by VIPs to avoid being hacked.
It's called Advanced Protection and anyone can use it for free – though it's built for celebs, politicians, and other important figures.
Protection features were first launched in 2017, but the system has been upgraded in the new Android 16 update.
It has special tricks like preventing your phone from being hacked by a physical cable, and using AI to detect scam call and text conversations live as they're happening.
The feature activates a long list of hardcore security measures designed to boost your security and dodge scams.
"Android 16 enhances and expands the Advanced Protection features that Google first launched in 2017," said Google's Stella Loh.
"Making it simple to turn on an array of robust device security features."
Stella, who works on the Android team, added: "Whether you're a public figure or just want the best of Android's powerful security features, you can turn on Advanced Protection for peace of mind that you're protected against the most sophisticated threats."
WHAT IS GOOGLE'S ADVANCED PROTECTION PROGRAM?
Google is the company behind the Android software that powers billions of phones around the world.
And there's a special feature called the Advanced Protection.
Google says that this serves up its "strongest protections against targeted attacks".
"Advanced Protection ensures all of Android's highest security features are enabled and are seamlessly working together to safeguard you against online attacks, harmful apps, and data risks," Google explained.

To get all the latest protections, you'll need Android 16.
That's currently out in beta version, which you can try for free today.
Or you can wait for a full release, which may take several months to turn up on your mobile.
Once you've got the latest Android update, go into Settings.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR ANDROID PHONE

Updating your Android phone is extremely important.
For a start, it means you'll get fancy new features to make your phone better.
But updates often include fixes that can repair security problems – or help you to stay safe from crooks.
You can check what software version you have by going into Settings > About Phone > Android Version.
And if you want to update, you can just go to Settings > System > Software Update.
Note that your Android phone will probably have worse battery life in the days following an update – but it should get better.

Then go to Settings > Google > Personal & Device Safety > Advanced Protection > Device Protection.
From there, you'll be able to see a list of all of the features that are activated once you toggle the setting on.
For instance, there's a Theft Detection Lock that means your phone automatically locks itself if it detects "suspicious activity indicative of theft".
Your phone will also lock itself if it goes offline for a prolonged period.

There's a USB Protection that prevents "physical attacks" using your phone's charging port.
Safe Browsing modes block dangerous websites for you.
And there are special AI-powered scam detection tools for both phone calls and text messages that flag up if you're being swindled in real-time.
The feature also blocks you from connecting to outdated 2G phone networks, and won't automatically reconnect to Wi-Fi networks "known to be insecure" either.

Scams are often designed to create a sense of urgency. Take time to ask questions and think it through.

Do your research to double check the details you are getting. Does what they're telling you make sense?

No reputable person or agency will ever demand payment or your personal information on the spot.
Some of the features won't arrive until "later this year", according to Google.

Secret code unlocks hidden chats WhatsApp has a way to hide sensitive conversations from the list of chats entirely. And the only way you can unlock them is with a top secret code. You can conceal them in a special folder known as locked chats. From there, you can set a secret code that's different from your phone's passcode. Only by typing the code in the search bar at the top of WhatsApp will the hidden chats magically appear before your eyes. It's not something I'm proud of but sometimes you have to trust your gut. I had heard that some dating apps allow you to disguise the icon as a calculator. What a genius idea - no one would think to tap on an innocent, boring calculator icon. So, I took the plunge and sure enough there was a fake calculator which opened up a dizzying number of saucy messages and unspeakable pics. Disappearing messages Disappearing messages became a thing thanks to Snapchat but people often forget you can add them on WhatsApp as well. And what's more curious, is you can add them onto individual chats. There can be perfectly legitimate reasons why a person has them on - sometimes you don't want old chats used against you. It also helps save storage having it switched on by not saving all your lengthy chats. But disappearing messages can also serve as a red flag too. The feature is set with a timer of 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. 3 Muted notifications Notifications are annoying at the worst of times and thankfully there is a way to mute them from certain conversations. I've found this particularly handy for pesky family group chats that seem to buzz all too often. But muted notifications can also be a sign of someone not wanting you to see chat alerts from specific people. You can actually see if a person has notifications muted for them by looking for the little bell icon on the right side of their name. Sometimes, people also go a step further and hide these muted chats in the archive folder too - this means the conversation will be hidden from the main chat list and won't cause any alerts to pop up on the phone too. Advanced chat privacy WhatsApp also has an advanced chat privacy option that goes a step further. Crucially, when switched on it won't save any pictures or videos you receive from that individual to your phone's main gallery. This stops anyone looking through your general photos app from stumbling across anything embarrassing. Hiding the WhatsApp icon It's one thing to hide individual chats but what about keeping the WhatsApp app itself out of sight? On many phones you can remove the app icon and make out you simply don't use WhatsApp. On iPhone, you can tap and hold any app, then select Require Face ID from the menu that appears - it's here when you'll find the Hide and Require Face ID option. However, there are some clues that an app or apps are being concealed. Firstly, to access them you need to go to the bottom of the app library section where there is a hidden folder listed - you can't see the contents but you know something is hiding in there. Apps will also still be listed in places like settings.

Brits warned over summer party gadget that can fry your phone and BREAK your camera – it can even damage your eyesight
PARTYGOERS have been warned over a popular dancefloor gadget that could 'ruin' their smartphone cameras this summer. Laser lights are a common feature at weddings, concerts and festivals. 5 5 But poor management of them can break your pricey smartphone. "I was at a party last night and the DJ had a laser light of some kind, whilst filming a friend... I noticed the image went all grainy and [a] pinkish/purplish colour," one Reddit user said. "I immediately stopped recording and quit/restarted the camera app, hoping it was a glitch but the image was still the same. "I then tried restarting my phone and also tried another camera app but the camera seems to have been ruined." The Reddit poster, u_JohnnieWalker-, says they own an iPhone 14 Pro, and shared images of what their camera looked like after the laser shined on it. Everything through the lens is fuzzy and awash with colourful hues. It might seem artsy and fun, if the issue wasn't permanent. Party lasers can fry camera sensors in smartphones because they are intense beams of light that can heat up the sensor. While it is uncommon, this can happen. They don't just damage smartphone camera sensors either, but traditional photography cameras too. Apple interview with Greg Joz Joswiak on new artificial intelligence, screening, hold assist, carplay, liquid glass and ios updates Sony urges customers to not directly expose their cameras to laser beams. "They may damage the image sensor and cause the camera to malfunction," the camera maker writes in a support page on its website. "If you're in an environment with a laser display, whether indoor or outdoor, with direct or indirect exposure (bouncing laser beams of a reflective object), the damage to the camera CMOS sensor is still severe. "This damage can also occur if your camera is off but not covered by the lens cap." Party lasers are not typically pointed into crowds, or at eye level, out of precaution. While the concentrated beams of light can damage cameras, they can also cause permanent eye damage when exposed for a long period. 5 LiDAR sensors found in newer cars can also cause the same invisible, but permanent damage. These sensors, which can detect objects and estimate distances, are used in automated driving and some safety features. A video that went viral on Reddit in April, from u/Jeguetelli, showed a Volvo EX90's LiDAR system ruining the smartphone filming it. Colourful specks start appearing on the screen, as the LiDAR sensor appears to be "frying" the camera in real-time. In both instances, the colourful specks and hue the camera adopts after laser damage will be there forever - unless you take your device to the repair shop. LiDAR sensors work by shooting a constant stream of infrared lasers out into the world, which a computer uses to 3D reconstruct the car's surroundings, including any nearby objects. While humans can't see these laser beams, camera sensors are very sensitive to them. iPhone tricks to try today Here are some of the best...
