Bengaluru delegation returns home after being stranded in Israel amid conflict: Report

Hindustan Times2 days ago

An 18-member delegation from the Bengaluru Political Action Committee (B.PAC), caught in Israel amid escalating tensions with Iran, safely returned to the city on Thursday evening after nearly a week of uncertainty, Deccan Herald reported.
According to the report, the group had travelled to Israel on a study tour from June 7 to 13, an initiative co-hosted by India's Ministry of External Affairs. Their agenda focused on understanding citizen participation in urban policymaking, water management, and environmental sustainability.
However, their planned return from Tel Aviv on June 13 was thrown into disarray when Israeli airspace was abruptly shut due to the intensifying conflict in the region, the report added.

Following the disruption, B.PAC began coordinating with the Israeli consulate, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Karnataka government to facilitate the group's return. The Indian embassy in Israel was also engaged to provide on-ground assistance.
Sharath S R, Manager at B.PAC, credited Israeli Consul General Orli Weitzman, who had accompanied the group, for playing a crucial role in ensuring the delegation's safety. 'She helped the team locate bunkers and arranged for their transport and security during their extended stay,' he said as quoted by the publication.
With commercial flights suspended, the delegation was eventually moved by road from Tel Aviv to Jordan. From there, they flew to Mumbai on Wednesday night and arrived in Bengaluru around 5.30 pm on Thursday.
'Their safety was our top concern,' Sharath said, adding that family members were relieved to see their return. 'This was a collective effort by multiple agencies, including the Ministry of External Affairs and the Karnataka government.'
The delegation included civic leaders, urban policy experts and sustainability advocates, all of whom expressed gratitude for the swift response and support they received during the crisis, the report further added.

FATF links dual-use equipment seized by India to Pakistan's missile programme

A dual use equipment seized by India from a Pakistan bound merchant vessel in 2020 is linked to Islamabad's National Development Complex that is involved in the country's missile development programme, a new report by the Financial Action Task Force has said. read more India's 2020 seizure of Pakistan-bound dual-use equipment has been linked to Islamabad's missile development programme, according to a new report by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The equipment, intercepted from a merchant vessel is associated with Pakistan's National Development Complex, a key entity involved in the country's missile development. FATF, the global financial watchdog, referenced the case in its latest report, which outlines risks and vulnerabilities in the international financial and trade systems. The incident was cited under a section highlighting the misuse of the maritime and shipping sectors to move sensitive goods, including dual-use items that can be repurposed for weapons programmes. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'In 2020, Indian custom authorities seized an Asian-flagged ship bound for Pakistan. During an investigation, Indian authorities confirmed that documents mis-declared the shipment's dual-use items,' the FATF report said. 'Indian investigators certified the items for shipment to be 'Autoclaves', which are used for sensitive high energy materials and for insulation and chemical coating of missile motors,' the report said. It said these sensitive items are included in dual-use export control lists of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). The bill of lading of the seized cargo provided evidence of the 'link between the importer and the National Development Complex, which is involved in the development of long-range ballistic missiles,' it said. The export of equipment such as the autoclaves without formal approval from various authorities is a violation of existing law, the FATF said. Pakistan's National Development Complex (NDC) has played a crucial role in the development of Pakistan's missile programme. India had seized the dual-use equipment from merchant vessel Da Cui Yun at Kandla port in Gujarat on February 3, 2020. The Indian customs authorities had stopped the vessel for wrongly declaring an autoclave, which can be used in construction of missiles, as an 'industrial dryer'. The report said that significant vulnerabilities remain across the global financial system in countering the financing of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Despite the grave threat posed by proliferation financing (PF), only 16 per cent of countries assessed by the FATF and its global network have demonstrated high or substantial effectiveness' in a process that evaluates the implementation of targeted financial sanctions under the United Nations Security Council resolutions on proliferation. The report said that unless the public and private sectors urgently bolster technical compliance and effectiveness, those seeking to finance WMD proliferation will continue to exploit weaknesses in existing controls. The report provided a detailed analysis of the evolving methods and techniques used to evade PF-related sanctions. 'Illicit actors are employing increasingly sophisticated methods to evade sanctions and circumvent export controls,' it said. With inputs from agencies

'Democratic Party corrupt': Indian-origin county judge KP George announces switch to GOP; Republicans say they don't want him

Indian-origin county judge KP George announces he will be joining the Republican Party. Indian-origin judge of Fort Bend County, Texas, recently announced that he will be switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party and will run as a Republican in his 2026 re-election bid. But the Republican Party of Texas said they don't support George's attempt to rebrand himself as a Republican as George never supported the principles of the party and is only switching the party as he is facing money laundering charges. George made history when he was first elected in 2018 as an Indian-American. 'Today, I'm making an all-important announcement that I am officially joining the Republican Party. For the past few years, it has become very clear to me, and also many others, that the Democratic Party has become one of corrupt and radical political ideology and positions that simply do not reflect the values of Fort Bend County families, small businesses and hardworking residents of Fort Bend County,' George said as he announced his decision. 'I have always believed in the foundational American principles of faith, family and freedom, And I realize that the Republican Party champions these values,' George said. Judge George is facing an indictment on a misdemeanor offense and has consistently maintained his innocence, calling the charges against him a 'political witch hunt.' The Democrats have demanded he resign. In his press conference, George said prosecutors offered to drop the felony charges if he agreed to resign. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! The Republican Party said in a statement that the charges against KP George are rooted in documented allegations of unethical and possibly criminal behavior. "KP George has never supported our platform, principles or priorities," party chairman Abraham George said. "While we are not in the business of telling people they cannot become Republicans, we are also not going to stand by while someone tries to hijack our Party's good name to escape the consequences of their actions," KP George said he does not expect everyone to embrace him. "I am looking forward to prove it to them. I'm going to be a better Republican than anybody in the coming months," he said. Born in India's Kerala, KP George studied in India. He immigrated to the United States in 1993 and started working for a financial firm in New York. Then he settled in Texas, earning certifications in finance and becoming a certified financial planner.
