The AIADMK defends its role in Keeladi excavations, wants politics out of the issue
The AIADMK has defended its role in the Keeladi excavations when it was in power. It also accused the ruling DMK of 'indulging only in politics' on the issue.
On Wednesday, the main Opposition party, long criticised for being silent on the issue, claimed credit for the Keeladi excavations during April-August 2018. Puratchi Thalaivi Peravai secretary and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R.B. Udhayakumar made these remarks in a statement. The next day, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin attacked the AIADMK for 'maintaining silence'.
On Friday, the party fielded deputy propaganda secretary K. Pandiarajan, who was the Minister for Tamil Language and Culture and Archaeology during 2017-21, to explain to the media the AIADMK government's record in archaeology in general and Keeladi in particular.
The former Minister pointed out that the average annual allocation for the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) was hardly ₹2 crore once. This went up to ₹105 crore, including the Centre government's share. Touching upon the archaeological work at Adichanallur in Thoothukudi district, he said that it was Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami who got the Union government to sanction the establishment of a site museum (which is being built at a cost of ₹17 crore).
Litigation before Madurai Bench
Tracing the origin of the Keeladi controversy, Mr. Pandiarajan recalled that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had, at one stage, decided not to pursue the project further. Jayalalithaa was the Chief Minister then, and she decided that the State government would step in if the Centre walked out. So, the AIADMK government applied to the Central government for approval, even as litigation was pending before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Later, the Central Advisory Board of Archaeology (CABA) permitted the TNSDA to conduct excavations, which were done in stages. The reports were submitted to the Union government. At the 2019 Book Fair in Chennai, Mr. Palaniswami released the first report.
When the ASI did the work in Keeladi, it confined itself to a few acres of land. But when the TNSDA stepped in, about 100 acres was acquired. It was from the Beta Analytic Testing Laboratory, Miami, Florida, U.S., that the dating report was obtained for the Keeladi findings, the former Minister said, adding that the proposal for a site museum at Keeladi was approved when Mr. Palaniswami was the Chief Minister.
'Culture of sticking posters'
Acknowledging that the TNSDA was created in the late 1960s when the DMK was in power, Mr. Pandiarajan, however, said that of a total of 39 excavations done so far, 33 were carried out when the AIADMK was in power. But the DMK government wanted to 'take credit for all the work' done by the AIADMK government. 'This is the height of the culture of sticking posters [on what the previous government had achieved],' Mr. Pandiarajan said, wondering how much the ruling DMK had allocated for the Keeladi excavations and whether those who were agitating on the issue had read the reports produced by the AIADMK government.
It was for ASI official Amarnath Ramakrishna to clarify the points raised by the ASI on the Keeladi excavations, and there was no room here for politics, Mr. Pandiarajan said, adding that the ASI did not question the antiquity of the Keeladi civilisation but raised some questions based on the reports submitted by the State government when the AIADMK was in power.
A 'blatant lie'
Speaking to reporters at Anna Arivalayam, DMK MLA N. Ezhilan said the Edappadi Palaniswami-led AIADMK government started the Keeladi excavationS based only on a Supreme Court verdict. He said the AIADMK government allocated funds only for two excavations: ₹5 lakh for Pattaraiperumpudur in Tiruvallur district and ₹55 lakh for Keeladi. He termed the AIADMK's claim of allocation of ₹105 crore a 'blatant lie'.

Velumani says he didn't attend RSS event in Coimbatore
S P Velumani COIMBATORE: Former AIADMK minister S P Velumani said he participated in the centenary celebration of Perur Aatheenam Shanthalinga Ramaswamy Adikalar here on Monday and did not attend the RSS function as he had not been invited to that. He added that false information was being spread that he participated in the RSS function held in the same venue. Addressing reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport on Monday evening, Velumani said Perur Aatheenam had brought pride to the Kongu region. 'We went to attend the centenary celebration of Santhalinga Ramasamy Adigalar as we were invited to it. But we were not invited to the RSS event.' When asked whether a silver Lord Murugan idol and a silver spear (Vel) had been given to the RSS chief to show that the AIADMK and the BJP were one, Velumani said, 'Mohan Bhagwat was invited as a special guest to the Adigalar programme. Since it was held in my assembly constituency, he was given a Lord Murugan idol and spear as gifts.' He said, 'The AIADMK would form alliances with many parties for election. But the party would not compromise on its policy of self-respect for that.' He said Siruvani dam water level had been raised to 50 feet during the AIADMK regime. However, the water level was reduced after a landslide in Kerala and the water level at the dam is not being kept above 40 feet now. 'The water level should be raised to 50 feet immediately, and the frequent water release should be stopped. Otherwise, the AIADMK will stage a protest within 10 days,' said Velumani.

Ex-AIADMK Ministers' participation in Lord Murugan conference shameful: Regupathy
The participation of some of the former AIADMK Ministers in the 'Muruga Bhakthargal' conference organised by the Hindu Munnani in Madurai on Sunday was 'shameful,' Minister for Natural Resources S. Regupathy said in Pudukottai on Monday. By remaining silent during the audio- visual presentation depicting Dravidian stalwarts such as Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, C.N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi in poor light, they had become 'unfit' to be called the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, he told journalists. The conference was held with a call to defeat 'Dravidam' in Tamil Nadu. However, the AIADMK had 'Dravidam' in its very name and its general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami had conveniently forgotten that. The AIADMK had proved that it had become 'bonded labourers' of the BJP, Mr. Regupathy alleged. Stating that the BJP would be driven out of the State, Mr. Regupathy said the DMK government would not give any room for religious bigotry in Tamil Nadu. Asked whether the heavy turnout of people at the conference will have any political impact on the 2026 Assembly elections, Mr. Regupathy said there was no connection between the two.

AIADMK remains committed to its ideology, says S.P. Velumani
Hours after sharing the stage with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and senior BJP leaders at the birth centenary celebrations of the late pontiff of Perur Mutt, Thavathiru Shanthalinga Ramasamy Adigalar, former AIADMK Minister S.P. Velumani clarified that he was invited to the event as the Thondamuthur MLA by the mutt that is in his constituency. Responding to the ruling DMK's criticism of his attending the event which was replete with religious ceremonies, Mr. Velumani told mediapersons at the Coimbatore airport later in the day that the AIADMK does not otherwise associate itself with RSS events. At the event, the RSS leader, who was the special invitee, was presented with a 'vel', the divine spear of Lord Muruga, by Adheenam Thavathiru Santhalinga Marudachala Adigalar to mark the centenary celebrations of the RSS. As for the participation of former AIADMK Ministers at the Lord Muruga devotees' conference in Madurai, Mr. Velumani said they attended the 'apolitical' event by invitation. While forgoing alliances for elections, the AIADMK remained committed to its (secular) ideology, Mr. Velumani said, referring to his party's vote against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Rajya Sabha. He said the DMK was indulging in such criticism as it feared defeat in the 2026 Assembly election.
