BRS MLC Kavitha's six page letter to KCR creates flutter

The Hindu23-05-2025

HYDERABAD
As was being speculated, some chinks in the armour of the Opposition [in Telangana] Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have been exposed with a letter addressed by the party MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K. Kavitha to her father and party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao seeing the light of the day.
The timing holds significance as the letter was out in open before Ms. Kavitha's return to Hyderabad from the USA. She went abroad to attend her elder son's graduation ceremony. The letter has raised many an eyebrow in the political circles as it has been apparently 'leaked' intentionally as there was no reason for the MLC to write a letter when she could as well meet her father in person.
The six-page handwritten letter, scribbled both in Telugu and English, has some interesting points raised by Ms. Kavitha. Referring to Mr. Rao's speech at the Warangal (Elkathurthy) public meeting held on April 27 to celebrate the party's 25th foundation day, she remarked that the party president had spared only two minutes to criticise/target Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
BRS cadre view that BJP could become an alternative
She felt that the party president could have been more critical about BJP . Such an apparent soft speech had given rise to the speculation that BRS could go for an alliance with BJP in future. Since the Congress had lost faith at grass-roots level, 'our cadre' (BRS) were of the view that BJP could become 'an alternative'.
Not contesting the MLC election to the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency had also sent the wrong message that BRS had indirectly helped BJP by staying away. Everyone in the party was expecting that 'you (KCR) would give a specific programme or direction to the party ranks to address such a political scenario', she wrote. She suggested to her father that the plenary of the party could be held for 1-2 days even now so that the party ranks could vent their opinion.
On the organisational matters, she brought to the party chief's notice that most of the MLAS, ZP chairpersons, ZPTC member level leaders were of the view access to the party president was only selective and suggested the chief to reach out to everyone. Further, she said that the old in-charges getting the responsibility for organising such a huge meeting had disappointed the Statehood movement activists.
'Dhoom dham' a failure
Those in-charges were claiming that they would be giving B-Forms for local bodies elections and suggested that only the party at State level should give B-Forms for MPTC/ZPTC Member contestants. The 'dhoom dham' at the meeting was a failure and the leaders who are with the party since 2001 should have been given an opportunity to speak before the party chief taking to the dais, she felt.
Ms. Kavitha stated that she was also disappointed in the party chief not speaking in Urdu, on Waqf Act, 42% BC reservation and on SC categorisation. She has also given some positive feedback in her letter.

Gujarat Confidential: Spokesperson suspended

The Gujarat Congress suspended one of its spokespersons Amit Nayak for 'putting out internal matters of the party on social media', allegedly speaking out against Dalits and indulging in irregular dealings, according to the suspension letter issued by the party. On June 4, Nayak had written an open letter addressed to the Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi where he had also criticised certain leaders for 'attending social events of political opponents'. The Congress, in its suspension letter, accused him of posting distorted images of Congress leaders seen at social events of BJP leaders. 'There are similar photos of you in BJP events that the disciplinary committee has received with complaints,' the letter said. Nayak is considered a close confidant of Congress general secretary Rajesh Soni, who was earlier arrested for an alleged objectionable post on Operation Sindoor.

Ravi said that 50 years ago, there were attempts to move away from democratic values by imposing a state of Emergency, which was declared for selfish reasons, to weaken the rights of the people, to control the judiciary, to take away the freedom of the Press, and for the suppression of human rights. "The Constitution reached a comatose state under the Congress dictatorship," he said, adding: "Those who massacred the Constitution shouldn't speak about it. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge did not raise his voice then. It was Jan Sangh, RSS, and BJP who did it." Shettar said the imposition of Emergency in India was an act of insulting the Constitution. More than 10 dignitaries who were imprisoned during the Emergency were honoured on the occasion. The programme was conducted to create awareness among the people by reviving the 'dark history' of Congress.

Trinamool Congress wins Kaliganj Assembly by-election, BJP sees silver lining

Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed won the byelections to Kaliganj Assembly on Monday (June 23, 2025) defeating her nearest rival Bharatiya Janata Party's Ashish Ghosh by a margin of 50,049 votes. Ms. Ahmed, the daughter of former Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed whose death necessitated the bypolls, secured 1,02,759 votes compared to Mr. Ghosh who finished the race with 52,710 votes. The CPI(M) supported Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Sheikh came in third with 28,348 votes when the counting of votes was held during the day. The Trinamool candidate bettered the margin of the ruling party compared to what her father had secured in the 2021 Assembly polls. Ms. Ahmed (38) quit her job at an IT firm in Kolkata to foray into politics. Two-time Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra, who has had a similar career path, welcomed the victory of Ms. Ahmed and said 'Satyameva Jayate' on social media. Kaliganj Assembly seat falls under Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered former MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, while dedicating the party's victory to 'Maa, Maati and Manush (mother, soil, and people)'. Ms. Banerjee added that: 'People of all religions, castes, races and walks of life in the area have blessed us immensely by exercising their right to vote in the by-elections to the Kaliganj Assembly constituency.' After the 2024 Lok Sabha election, bypolls to 11 Assembly constituencies have been held in the State and the Trinamool Congress has won all the 11 seats. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, however, said that there was a silver lining as more than 70% of Hindus in the constituency voted in favour of the BJP. Mr. Adhikari said that out of 108 booths with a majority of Hindu population in Kaliganj, in 107 booths the BJP candidate secured victory. Calling for the unity of Hindus in West Bengal, the BJP leader said that the party requires support of 70% Hindu votes to defeat Trinamool Congress in next year's Assembly polls. BJP leader Amit Malviya said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's claims that people from all communities voted for her party's candidate in Kaliganj is incorrect. Mr. Malviya said that Hindus are 43% of the voters and Muslims comprise the rest of the voters in Kaliganj. He also cited the voting trend to assert that the BJP candidate secured 74% of votes at Kaliganj higher than the votes secured in the 2021 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
