New bus routes vital to improve ‘connectivity over Castletown River'

Cllr. Ciaran Fisher said the traffic problems that emerged from the roadworks being carried out has 'once more drawn attention to the poor connectivity across the Castletown River.'
Speaking after the meeting, he told independent.ie 'While I welcome the improvements to Bridge Street and Linenhall Street, and I think they provide a much nicer approach to the town over the Newry bridge, I'm wary that anti-car design may cause it to be a traffic hotspot.
Time will tell on that one, but one thing that is for sure, is that the lack of bus connectivity forces thousands of people every week to use their cars to get around.'
'The roadworks will only be finished at Bridge Street and we'll be looking at the Lisdoo junction and Armagh road improvements, so there is more congestion in the same area to come.'
Cllr. Fisher pointed to a recent survey of traffic which estimated that on a typical workday, Newry bridge had 5000 plus cars on it. 'The Táin bridge has traffic of 16000+ cars on a similar given day. Approximately 4000 people a day leave the 'northern region' of the Dundalk area to come south into its other parts.'
He added: 'If Transport Ireland wants to make an instant improvement in how people travel, and to reduce the traffic, a new bus route servicing the north of the town is needed.'
He highlighted gaps in the bus services in the south of the town, saying there are 'no stops on the Avenue Road or Tom Bellew Avenue, not to mention the sprawl of houses on the south west of the town.'
"Ath Lethan and the Lisdoo/Armagh Road are crying out for a bus service and have an enormous two way bus demand, in and out of the town.'
He explained: 'This is why I have resurrected this with the Active Travel team and implored them to get behind these proposed routes. There was a proposal to do so in the Local Transport Plan and I think it should be not just looked at, but enacted.'
At the Municipal meeting he asked about the prospect of this happening, and mentioned how this would take cars off the road and reduce traffic.

The meeting heard that the Council have been recently in touch with Transport Ireland about making this a reality.
"The conversations have centred around routes and road ownership so far. And while there is a way to go yet, it's a stepping stone in the right direction.'
He added: 'Meanwhile, the population on this side of the town is only going to grow. There is considerable strain on the water infrastructure on the south of town and planning has been granted for a sizable development out the Lisdoo Road in recent times, this only strengthens the case to get the transport infrastructure in place.'
The Dundalk Councillor said: 'I'm asking for a carrot before stick approach, make it easier to people to choose not to take the car and sit in traffic, before talking about reducing road space, reducing car parking spaces and making it constantly more expensive to run a car.'

The Young and the Restless spoilers: Victor's harsh punishment for Adam?

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Over the years, we've come to learn a few things about The Young and the Restless' Victor Newman (Eric Braeden). He's a shrewd businessman, able to hold a grudge longer than anyone in Genoa City, a masterful tactician when it comes to his enemies and he demands loyalty from his family. Unfortunately for his family members, loyalty and obedience are often synonymous terms in his book. Knowing what we know, we don't see Adam's (Mark Grossman) refusal to do his father's bidding at Newman Media ending well. Victor has told his youngest son several times now that he wants Adam to use Newman Media to publish attack pieces against Billy (Jason Thompson), painting the Abbott as incompetent and an imbecile, among other things. However, Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) has been in Adam's ear, telling him not to go after Billy. Call it guilt for cheating on Billy with Adam or a platonic love for Billy for helping bring her out of a dark time in her life, but Chelsea is adamant that Adam not use Newman Media to tear Billy down. So far, Adam has managed to stall his dad and honor Chelsea's request. That hasn't been easy, as Victor has been rather insistent and Billy has been poking Adam with insults. But before Victor left for Aristotle Dumas' party, he made one final demand of his son. Fast forward to The Young and the Restless episode airing on June 16, and Adam tells Chelsea that he won't do what Victor asked and will just face the consequences when The Mustache returns to Genoa City. We can't help but suspect that while Chelsea is proud of Adam, Victor will likely be furious. The Newman patriarch may even retaliate, and the father/son duo could again find themselves at odds. If we had to guess, there's a good chance that Victor fires Adam for the umpteenth time and puts someone else in charge as CEO of Newman Media. That would be a real shame, considering Adam worked so hard over the last two years to earn his father's trust and be welcomed back into the family business. But hey, Holden (Nathan Owens) is currently on the market for a job in Genoa City, so who's to say Holden can step into Adam's role? Even if Victor doesn't fire Adam completely, there's always a chance he demotes Adam to COO of Newman Media and gives Adam a boss. That could still be Holden, or perhaps he places Nick (Joshua Morrow) in the company's CEO chair. After all, with Victoria (Amelia Heinle) already as CEO of parent corporation Newman Enterprises and Victor far from retired, does Nick need to aid his sister? One thing we don't think Victor will do is kick Adam and Chelsea out of the other Newman Ranch. He's still a family man after all. However, Victor doesn't like it when people go rogue when he gives explicit instructions, so Adam should definitely brace himself. New episodes of The Young and the Restless air weekdays on CBS. Episodes become available to stream on Paramount Plus the next day.

‘20-minute returns' turn into retiree's RM733k regret

GEORGE TOWN: A retired factory worker recently lost RM733,300 after falling victim to an online investment scam syndicate. Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of the Barat Daya district police headquarters received a report from the 66-year-old victim on June 18. The victim claimed to have received a text in early March from a woman who introduced herself as a representative of a reputable investment company. 'He was promised a return of between 10% and 15% on each investment, within just 20 minutes,' he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported. 'The victim was instructed to download an application to register and begin investing.' Comm Hamzah said the victim made 25 transactions into three different bank accounts between March 7 and April 24, but realised he had been cheated when he was asked to make an additional payment to withdraw his supposed investment profits.
