Sook's transformation: Major infrastructure upgrades set to propel growth
KOTA KINABALU: Despite its remote location in the interior of Sabah, Sook is not being left behind in terms of development, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Sook, situated east of Keningau and northwest of Nabawan, is part of Sabah's rural interior and is well-known for its agricultural activities. It lies about 150 to 180 kilometres from the state capital.
Hajiji said that several key infrastructure projects were currently underway in Sook, including two major road paving initiatives — the 40km Sinaron, Sook to Linayukan, Tongod road, valued at RM320 million, and the 22.85km Rancangan Belia Tiulon, Sook road, valued at RM127 million, both of which are under construction.
"With the completion of these paved roads, travel time and costs will be reduced, which will, in turn, stimulate local economic growth," he said during the launch of the upgrading of Sook to a full district at the Sook District Secretariat Building in Keningau on Monday.
Regarding educational development, Hajiji said that four new schools were currently being built — Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ambual, SK Rancangan Belia Tiulon, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dalit, and SMK Trusmadi, all of which are nearing completion.
The upgrading of healthcare facilities and power infrastructure was also completed last year. This includes the nearly RM1 million upgrade of Klinik Kesihatan Sook, as well as the construction of Klinik Desa Karamatoi and Klinik Desa Marapok, each valued at RM600,000.
"Additionally, 120 residents have benefited from the Rumah Mesra SMJ programme from 2022 to 2024, amounting to nearly RM9.6 million in Sook. In 2025, the state government has allocated RM6.4 million to build 80 more SMJ houses in Sook," he added.
Other planned developments include the construction of a sports complex, a district hospital, a district police station, and an expansion of the Sook health clinic area.
In conjunction with the event, Hajiji also approved an allocation of RM2 million for the construction of the Dewan Terbuka Daerah Sook and the upgrading of the Sook District Secretariat Building.

Retiree loses over RM530,000 to Facebook investment scam
JOHOR BAHRU: A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via an advertisement on the Facebook application. Seri Alam District Police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. 'Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. 'Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders.

Gurdwara Sahib Miri gets RM500,000 Unifor boost for renovation works

MIRI (June 21): Gurdwara Sahib Miri has received an allocation of RM500,000 from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to support its ongoing renovation works. The cheque was handed over by State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting during a brief ceremony at the temple yesterday. In his remarks, the Piasau assemblyman also reminded recipients to utilise the allocation without delay and to ensure that all costs and expenditures would be properly documented. 'Make sure to use the funds and report what has been done, so there is a proper record. 'If everything is in order, it will be easier for them (Unifor) to consider future applications,' he advised. The Sikh community in Miri has roots dating back to the 1880s, with the original 'gurdwara' (Sikh temple) built in 1919, and the current building completed in 1975. Today, it continues to serve as a place of worship and learning for the Sikh families in the area. According to the project director Gurvir Singh Sandhu, the current upgrading initiative was approved in 2021, with physical works kicking off in 2022. 'The renovation works are now about 80 per cent complete and are expected to finish by early July,' said Gurvir. Among the new features being introduced are Dayak-inspired motifs on the glass panels by the entrance, reflecting the community's appreciation for local cultures and Sarawak's multi-ethnic landscape. Ting also noted that the Sikh community here had received a total of RM2.6 million in Unifor funding over the years for various phases of upgrading works on the temple. 'In recent years, the temple has undergone various improvements including upgrades to the 'langar' hall, kitchen facilities, and space expansion to accommodate major religious events.' Perlis forms task force to curb RM1.5m revenue leakage
KANGAR: A special task force led by Perlis state secretary Datuk Rahimi Ismail has been formed to address revenue leakages related to the rental of state land and buildings. Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli said the task force is responsible for identifying and collecting data on premises and assets involved in the leakages, as well as coordinating actions to ensure that lost revenue can be recovered. 'Among the task force's early achievements is identifying revenue leakages involving four departments/agencies. Through these initial actions, the total leakage identified has reached RM1.5 million. '...with an estimated RM800,000 expected to be recovered by the end of 2025. This effort will continue to involve other departments,' he said during the monthly assembly of the state administration here today. Mohd Shukri said the task force is also in the process of preparing a Premises Usage Management Guideline, which has been reviewed by the State Legal Adviser's Office and is now being examined by the Perlis State Land and Mines Office (PTG) for feedback. Mohd Shukri said the task force was formed following a January audit committee meeting that called for immediate action to ensure rental income from state-owned properties collected by third parties is returned to the state. Issues related to the rental of state land and buildings include activities conducted without valid contracts or agreements, violations of existing regulations, encroachments on government-owned land and the rental of assets that do not provide reasonable returns to the state, he added. 'This situation not only causes revenue loss but also reflects non-compliance with the laws and regulations in place,' he said.
