Ayushmann Khurrana on defying Bollywood hero stereotypes, managing stress, and his take on sustainability: ‘Growing up in a middle-class household…'
From anchoring on radio and reality TV to becoming one of India's most unconventional leading actors, Ayushmann Khurrana has redefined what it means to be a Bollywood star.
With hits like Vicky Donor, Article 15, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Andhadhun, Badhaai Do, and more, the National Award-winning actor, singer, and poet has consistently chosen scripts that challenge the norm, be it tackling taboos around masculinity, caste, sexuality, or social stigma. 'I'm constantly on the lookout for characters who are vulnerable, real, and flawed, who rise up to do something extraordinary,' said Khurrana.
In an exclusive interview with the indianexpress.com ahead of World Environment Day 2025, Khurrana opens up about the instincts that drive his storytelling, the values shaped by his middle-class upbringing, and how sustainable living, both on and off screen, guides his everyday choices. Edited excerpts below:

Ayushmann Khurrana: Evolution. Every phase has shaped me. It taught me to take risks – half of my most successful films were with debutant directors. I love what I do, and I'm grateful for the opportunities. Each new project brings fresh energy. I seek out characters who are flawed, vulnerable, and yet manage to do something meaningful. My choices might not fit the conventional image of a Bollywood star, but they resonate with the audience. My journey has been that of a disruptor

Ayushmann Khurrana: It's definitely a mix; instinct leads the way. I am drawn to scripts that unsettle me and push me out of my comfort zone. My philosophy is simple: I want to tell stories that matter, that reflect society's blind spots, and start relevant conversations. So yes, instinct brings me to the door, but my beliefs ensure I walk through it every time.
Q3. Has mindful living shaped how you approach food, from indulgence to something more intentional?
Ayushmann Khurrana: Absolutely. I've shifted from eating just for taste to eating for well-being. I still relish my sweet dishes, like a scoop of kulfi, but I make room for those treats rather than having them by default. Most meals now centre around whole grains, fresh seasonal produce, and simple home-cooked recipes. Mindful eating for me means tasting each bite, checking in with my body's needs, and choosing ingredients that fuel both body and soul.
Q4. Sustainability is becoming central to how we live. Have you made any conscious changes – at home, in your wardrobe, or daily habits – that reflect this shift?
Ayushmann Khurrana: Definitely. A lot of these values were instilled in me early on. Growing up in a middle-class household taught me to respect resources: never waste food, water, or electricity. Those lessons became a mindset, a way of life, and helped in understanding the impact of our actions on the planet. Today, I make small but consistent efforts – waste segregation, conserving water, switching off lights and devices not in use. These may seem minor, but collectively, they form the foundation of a healthier planet. I believe that when we live with intention and honour the resources around us, we nurture it for generations to come.
Q5. If you could inspire your audience to adopt one conscious habit, what would it be, and why?
Ayushmann Khurrana: Sustainability is not just a buzzword for me. I believe in making mindful choices that benefit the environment and, by extension, elevate the quality of our daily lives. I'd say start your day with a 10-minute digital detox. No phones, no screens—just reconnect with yourself. Also, avoid single-use items, whether it's tissues, paper plates, or disposable makeup wipes. These small changes are easy to adopt and can have a big impact on the planet.
Q. With such a packed schedule, what helps you manage stress? Are there rituals that keep you mentally grounded?
Ayushmann Khurrana: There are a few non-negotiables for me: I start the day with yoga and meditation, and then plug into music or poetry. I barely scroll on my phone as a 'break' – that is just more noise. Instead, I walk barefoot on the grass, do simple stretches, or sometimes sit quietly with a glass of Signature Packaged Drinking Water and watch the sunset. Those tiny rituals reset my headspace.
Q. What's something you believe today that the younger you would've never expected but would be proud of?
Ayushmann Khurrana: I have been silently manifesting the life and career I have today. I think the younger me dreamt big, even if he didn't know how it would all unfold. What he didn't expect was the courage I'd find to take risks and embrace failure. As an actor, I consciously chose to do films not set in formulas. Every film I said yes to came from a place of conviction, both from the makers and me. The subjects were not only promising but also had the potential to be thought-provoking around important societal issues that are usually not addressed. That these stories resonated with audiences is something my younger self would be very proud of.

Indian businessman gifts a custom pink Rolls-Royce to his 1-year-old daughter. Internet says, ‘We are not impressed'
In a world where over-the-top gestures are increasingly the norm on social media, Indian businessman Satish Sanpal may have just redefined extravagance. Celebrating Father's Day in Dubai , Sanpal stunned the internet by gifting his one-year-old daughter, Isabella, a custom-built pink Rolls-Royce—complete with monogrammed interiors, a personalized note, and a 'Congratulations, Isabella' nameplate. The video, originally posted on Instagram , features the founder of ANAX Developments arriving at the luxury showroom with his wife Tabinda and toddler in tow. What follows is a scene straight out of a luxury lifestyle reel: pink balloons, music, dancing, and a glittering car unveiled for a child who, quite literally, can't even drive it for another 17 years. But this wasn't Isabella's first brush with grandeur. In February, her first birthday party was a jaw-dropping spectacle held at Atlantis The Royal, one of Dubai's most opulent hotels. The venue was transformed into a winter wonderland with artificial snow, icy chandeliers, and white trees, all topped off with appearances by Bollywood stars like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Atif Aslam, and Nora Fatehi. Isabella made her entrance in a princess carriage wearing a ball gown that might've made Cinderella blush. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The UK's Best-Selling Relief Shoe Has Just Been Named The 2025 Test Winner. Daily Buzz Report Undo View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Dubai | لوڤن دبي (@lovindubai) A Dubai dad moment; or a viral misfire? While the Instagram caption praised Sanpal's lavish gesture as the ultimate 'Dubai Dad' moment, not everyone on the internet was swooning. Comments ranged from sarcastic to critical. One user noted, 'Must be a really nice feeling when you get gifted something so special, knowing you cannot use it for the next 17 years.' Another quipped, 'It's a tacky and flashy display of wealth and just proves that money does not buy class.' Others pointed out the absurdity of giving a toddler a high-end car when 'small kids are the happiest with empty containers and boxes.' Given the flashy nature of Instagram post, a commentor wrote, "Another show off, we are not impressed sorry." While gifting luxury cars isn't unheard of in the world of billionaires and Instagram influencers, the gesture has sparked broader conversations around parenting, wealth display, and whether such ostentatious acts make meaningful memories or just eye-rolls. In a country like India, where millions of children grow up without basic amenities, such gestures inevitably invite scrutiny—especially when shared online with cinematic flair. While Sanpal might see it as a father's way of showing boundless love, the jury of the internet seems divided between awe and exhaustion. For now, baby Isabella has a Rolls-Royce she can't drive, a designer wardrobe she'll outgrow in months, and a social media footprint most adults would envy. As for the rest of us? We're still debating whether this was a parenting flex or just another tone-deaf showcase in the age of viral opulence. Sandeep Reddy Vanga's BOLD Move: Lauds Kiara Advani Amid Deepika Padukone Row, Snubs Shahid Kapoor
Sandeep Reddy Vanga celebrated 6 years of Shahid Kapoor's Kabir Singh but only shared Kiara Advani's picture. Sandeep Reddy Vanga has marked 6 years of Kabir Singh- his Bollywood breakthrough film. However, the post has caught everyone's attention as the director has only shared Kiara Advani's picture, seemingly snubbing Shahid Kapoor, who played the titular character in the movie. Interestingly, Vanga has shared an image of his former leading lady amid reports of his fallout with Deepika Padukone. Kiara Advani played Preeti in the film, a pivotal character who was Shahid Kapoor's love interest in the film. Instead of sharing an image of his hero, Vanga posted a picture featuring Kiara. Have a look here: This comes as Vanga is embroiled in the Spirit controversy. For the unversed, Sandeep Reddy Vanga reportedly removed Deepika Padukone from Prabhas starrer Spirit. Reports suggest that her demands, including eight-hour workdays, a high salary, and a share in the film's profits, did not sit well with director Vanga. Deepika, a new mother, is reportedly seeking to balance her work and personal life by reducing her working hours. Vanga then took to his X handle and slammed an unnamed actor by accusing them of playing 'dirty PR games'. 'When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) between us. But by doing this, You've 'DISCLOSED' the person that you are…Putting down a Younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for? As a filmmaker, I put years of hard work behind my craft & for me, filmmaking is everything. You didn't get it. You won't get it. You will never get it," Vanga wrote and then added, 'Aisa karo…. Agli baar poori kahani bolna… kyunki mujhe jarra bhi farak nahi padtha. #dirtyPRgames. I like this kahawath very much 🙂 खुंदक में बिल्ली खंबा नोचे !" Soon after, Deepika was announced as part of Atlee and Allu Arjun's upcoming film AA22 X A6. Judging by the teaser, she appears to play a warrior princess in the action-packed venture. After the film's announcement, Allu Arjun was reportedly ousted from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's next film. If a report by is to be believed, the Telugu superstar had signed a movie with the Animal director last year. However, insiders now claim that the film has been put on hold and Allu Arjun has been removed from it. First Published:
