WhatsApp IOS update: Latest update lets you copy the text you need

Express Tribune03-06-2025

WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature in its latest iOS update that allows iPhone users to copy specific portions of text within messages, enhancing precision and user control.
The update, available in version 25.16.81, enables users to highlight and copy select words or phrases rather than the entire message, a function long requested by users.
Previously, WhatsApp only allowed full-message copying, which often meant manually editing text after pasting.
To use the feature, users must update WhatsApp via the App Store. Once updated, they can press and hold any message, highlight the desired text, and tap "Copy" to save only that portion.

The feature works across individual chats, group conversations, and channels.
The move streamlines referencing specific information—such as dates, names or quotes—without the need to extract it from longer messages manually.
In addition to partial text selection, the update introduces a 'text detection' tool. This feature allows users to copy text directly from images received in WhatsApp chats.
It's supported on iPhones running iOS 16 or later and uses native iOS functionality to identify and extract visible text from images.
WhatsApp has historically offered iOS users early access to certain features, such as pinch-to-zoom during video calls and the ability to add a participant to an ongoing call directly from a chat window.
Its official beta channel also released an update on iOS, with version 25.17.10.75 now available on TestFlight.

The absence of selective text copying had been a notable gap for iPhone users, now resolved with this update.
While this release is currently limited to iOS, similar features may soon be introduced for Android users.
Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, is reportedly working toward harmonising the feature set across platforms to ensure a consistent messaging experience.

Adobe Project Indigo: A free-to-use iPhone app for SLR-style photos

Adobe has launched a new computational photography camera app for iPhones, offering users a powerful tool to capture high-quality, natural-looking photos. The app, named Project Indigo, is free to download and currently available for iPhone 12 Pro models and newer, with Adobe recommending optimal use on an iPhone 15 Pro or later. The app was developed in part by Marc Levoy, a renowned figure in mobile imaging who previously helped transform the Google Pixel camera's capabilities. Now an Adobe Fellow, Levoy worked alongside senior scientist Florian Kainz to build the app under Adobe Labs. The project was announced on Adobe's website through a technical blog. Unlike most Adobe products, Project Indigo does not require users to log into an Adobe account, allowing immediate access to its features. Indigo leverages computational photography to improve image quality by capturing a burst of photos and combining them to produce a final image with enhanced dynamic range and reduced noise. The app aims to deliver a 'natural, SLR-like' aesthetic and includes full manual controls for focus, ISO, shutter speed, and white balance — features aimed at enthusiasts and professionals alike. Adobe Labs releases an experimental digital photography app Project Indigo ( to showcase breakthrough innovations, including reflection removal, which is being published at CVPR this week. Check out this blog: — Adobe Research (@AdobeResearch) June 13, 2025 In the technical blog post, Levoy and Kainz outlined how the app processes images to retain a natural look, explaining key elements of its image pipeline. They noted that Project Indigo is intended as both a standalone tool and a testbed for features that may appear in other Adobe products. Experimental tools under consideration include a reflection removal button, portrait mode enhancements, and eventually, video recording capabilities. 'This is the beginning of a journey for Adobe – towards an integrated mobile camera and editing experience that takes advantage of the latest advances in computational photography and AI,' wrote Levoy and Kainz. The team's vision is to bridge the gap between casual mobile shooters and advanced photographers, offering an app that balances accessibility with powerful photographic control. An Android version is also in development. For now, Project Indigo marks Adobe's most significant foray into mobile camera software, reflecting the growing importance of AI-driven photography tools in both consumer and professional imaging.

Apple wants AI to help build its next-generation chips

Apple Inc. is exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence to streamline and enhance the design of its custom silicon chips, a senior executive said, highlighting the tech giant's growing reliance on cutting-edge AI tools in hardware development. In previously undisclosed remarks made last month in Belgium, Johny Srouji, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, said the company sees 'high potential' in applying AI to electronic design automation (EDA), the software used to create semiconductors. 'Generative AI techniques have a high potential in getting more design work in less time, and it can be a huge productivity boost,' Srouji said during a speech while accepting an award from Imec, a leading semiconductor research group that collaborates with major global chipmakers. Johny Srouji, Apple's Senior VP of Hardware Technologies on Apple Silicon: One of the key lessons Apple learned was that it needed to use the most cutting-edge tools available to design its chips, including the latest chip design software from electronic design automation… — Ray Wang (@rwang07) June 19, 2025 The comments, reported by Reuters, offer rare insight into how Apple plans to expand AI usage beyond software and services into its hardware innovation process — a space traditionally dominated by precision engineering and years-long timelines. Apple designs its own chips, including the A-series for iPhones and M-series for Mac computers, and relies on EDA tools developed by firms like Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, both of which are integrating AI capabilities into their platforms. In his address, Srouji traced Apple's silicon journey from the introduction of the A4 chip in 2010 to the chips powering its latest Vision Pro headset. He credited the company's philosophy of embracing cutting-edge technologies — and taking risks — for its success. He pointed to the transition of the Mac lineup from Intel processors to Apple Silicon in 2020 as a defining moment. 'Moving the Mac to Apple Silicon was a huge bet for us. There was no backup plan, no split-the-lineup plan. So we went all in, including a monumental software effort,' Srouji said. While Apple has remained tight-lipped publicly about its generative AI roadmap, CEO Tim Cook has recently acknowledged that the company is investing heavily in the space. Analysts expect more AI-related announcements during upcoming hardware and developer events.

Google Saerch Live feature: What is it, where is it available, plus full details

Google has launched a new voice-activated feature, Search Live, for its Google app on iOS and Android, giving users in the United States a more natural, conversational way to search the web. The rollout is part of the company's AI Mode initiative, currently being trialled in Google Labs. Search Live allows users to speak directly to Google Search, pose follow-up questions, and receive responses — all without needing to type. The feature is aimed at people searching while multitasking or on the move, offering a hands-free experience similar to Google's existing Gemini Live tool. By tapping the newly introduced Live icon in the app, users can initiate voice conversations with the search engine. The assistant responds with spoken answers and links to relevant webpages. Users can continue chatting with the AI even while switching between apps, making multitasking smoother. A Transcript feature enables mid-conversation switching between voice and text, while a searchable AI Mode history allows users to return to previous queries and resume where they left off. Both services offer overlapping functionalities, including camera-based input integration — a feature Google says is coming to Search Live in future updates, despite already being present in Gemini Live. Google has stated that Search Live runs on a customised version of its Gemini AI model, with enhanced voice interaction capabilities. However, the introduction of parallel apps with nearly identical tools has led to confusion among users and industry observers. The new feature is only available in the US at present, with no announcements yet regarding an international rollout.
