Chhattisgarh police officer accidentally steps on IED while patrolling, killed in blast
A police officer was killed and several others were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district early on Monday.
Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Giripunje, who was posted at Konta division, was patrolling with other personnel on the Konta-Aerobora road near Dronda when he accidentally stepped on a pressure IED believed to have been planted by Maoists, an official said.
The patrolling was part of precautions taken ahead of the June 10 country-wide bandh call given by the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).
The officer was rushed to Konta hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. Other officers and jawans who were with him are under treatment and are said to be out of danger.
This takes the total number of security personnel killed in Maoist-related incidents to 18 this year. The number of Maoists killed this year in encounters is 209 in Chhattisgarh, including 192 in the Bastar region. Last year, 219 Maoists were killed in Chhattisgarh, including 217 in the Bastar region.

He condemned the incident and directed officials to take stringent action. The police arrested those involved and booked them under multiple sections of the BNS. In response to the incident, the State Government has announced a financial assistance package for the victim. Sirisha was granted Rs.5 lakh in aid, and the government has pledged to take responsibility for her children's education. Additionally, she will be allotted 50 cents of land within Kuppam municipality limits to help her rebuild her life.

The SOP, released by the director general of police (DGP) of the union territory of Chandigarh, outlines detailed instructions on how police officers must conduct themselves when interacting with military personnel—whether they are complainants, accused, witnesses, or mediators. 'This SOP has been established to ensure that all interactions with Army personnel are conducted in a lawful, professional, respectful, impartial, and transparent manner," stated the DGP's official order. 'Maintaining a respectful and courteous demeanor, ensuring prompt attention to grievances, and providing necessary legal and logistical support is key to this protocol." A key highlight of the SOP is the clause that serving Army personnel cannot be arrested without prior permission from the central government unless involved in serious crimes such as rape, murder, or kidnapping unrelated to official duties. In such cases, immediate intimation must be sent to the nearest military station headquarters with all details of the arrest. 'All actions must remain fair, lawful, and transparent to foster trust and cooperation between the two institutions," the order emphasised. The DGP has given various key provisions while dealing with Army personnel in different situations. Army personnel lodging complaints are to be given priority and treated with confidentiality and dignity. In case of arrest, strict adherence to Sections 42 and 43 of BNSS is required, and military authorities must be informed immediately. The SOP says witnesses or mediators from the Army should be engaged respectfully, with preference for remote communications unless physical presence is absolutely necessary. As per the SOP, a dedicated desk under a DSP-rank officer will handle all Army-related matters to ensure seamless communication and coordination. High-profile or sensitive cases may involve the formation of a special investigation team (SIT). Any police misconduct involving defence personnel will be dealt with in a strict and transparent manner. The SOP also mandates that Army property, such as weapons, vehicles, and equipment, must be handled carefully and reported promptly. Media disclosures involving Army personnel are restricted without official clearance to safeguard sensitive information. Operation Kavach-8.0: 139 arrested, 133 cases filed in 24-hour drugs crackdown in Delhi
In a single-day crackdown under the Delhi Police's 'Operation Kavach 8.0', 139 narcotics offenders were arrested and 133 cases were filed under the NDPS Act, officers said on Friday. The operation was conducted between 6 pm on Wednesday and 6 pm on Thursday. It resulted in the seizure of 90.3 grams of heroin, 25.9 kg of ganja, 3.32 grams of cocaine, 4.63 grams of MDMA, 20.08 grams of amphetamine, and 12 buprenorphine tablets, said police. The operation was carried out by over 350 teams from all 15 districts, the Crime Branch, and the Special Cell, covering 1,040 targeted locations. It was supervised by senior officers, including Special Commissioner of Police, Crime, Devesh Chandra Srivastava, and Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Surender Singh. Alongside NDPS enforcement, 224 people were arrested in 217 Excise Act cases, with the seizure of 47,476 illicit quarter bottles of liquor. Thirty persons were held in 29 Arms Act cases, leading to the recovery of pistols, cartridges, and knives. In addition, 55 gamblers were arrested and over Rs 25,000 in cash was seized. Police also prosecuted 2,031 violators under the Tobacco Act, seized over 1.7 lakh prohibited foreign cigarettes, and intercepted e-cigarettes worth Rs 9.38 lakh. An 18-year-old linked to the anti-Lawrence Bishnoi gang was also caught with four semi-automatic pistols. Officials said the crackdown has pushed major traffickers underground and disrupted smuggling networks. 'Under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2,031 violators were prosecuted and one person was arrested with over 1.71 lakh prohibited foreign cigarettes and 469 e-cigarettes,' said the Srivastava. Prohibited e-cigarettes worth around Rs 9.38 lakh were also seized from a shop in Safdarjung Enclave, police said. The senior police officer said that since January 2025, a total of 1,439 narco-offenders have been arrested in 1,127 NDPS cases, with seizures of nearly 38 kg of heroin, over 3,000 kg of cannabis, and other contraband.
