A man launched an attack on a teenager he believed was "up to no good" near his property, breaking his arm and wrist, a court heard. George Kovacs assaulted the 17-year-old with a fence post and pole and then threatened to kill him if he returned.
A judge said he had read about issues involving people misbehaving and causing damage in the area where the defendant lived, but sending the 57-year-old father to prison, he said: "What you did went far beyond anything you reasonably thought you could do to protect that property."
Amy Edwards, prosecuting, told Caernarfon Crown Court on December 17, 2022, two then-17-year-old friends were walking in the mountains in the Waunfawr area of Gwynedd when they noticed an abandoned outbuilding and "out of curiosity" walked towards it, reports WalesOnline.
Ms Edwards said as they approached the building a vehicle drove past them before stopping and reversing back to them. The driver of the vehicle, Kovacs, got out and shouted "What the f*** are you boys doing here?" The court heard that one of the teenagers, Kian Williams, who is now an adult, apologised to the driver but Kovacs continued "ranting" and the teenager told him: "There's no need to be a d*** about it."
The prosecutor said Kovacs then grabbed a fence post and began swinging it around and striking Mr Williams, with the teenager putting his arms up to protect himself. The force of the blows were such that the post snapped. The court heard the defendant continued shouting that the boys should leave the area before grabbing Mr Williams, pushing him up against a wall and throwing a number of punches, all of which missed their target.
The prosecutor said the teenagers made for the footpath but Kovacs armed himself with a pole and followed them. The defendant struck Mr Williams a number of times to the legs and the back, though the blows to the back were cushioned by the rucksack he was wearing. Kovacs told the teenagers: "I'm going to kill you... come back again and I will slice you." For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter
The court heard that the teenagers made their way home and Mr Williams was subsequently taken to Bangor's Ysbyty Gwynedd by his father where doctors found he had a fractured arm and a fracture to bones in his wrist which required surgery.
Meanwhile Kovacs put a post on a Facebook saying: "The lads who came from Liverpool or Manchester to my place, don't come back... next time they will have more then just a limp. Merry Christmas." He also said he had the registration of a vehicle they had been seen getting into.
The court heard Kovacs was arrested and interviewed and admitted striking the teenager with a pole saying his actions were justified as he was protecting his property.
In an impact statement written in May this year which was read to the court the victim said he still suffers with pain in his wrist and gets flashbacks to what happened in Waunfawr. He said he feels fearful when he goes out and constantly thinks of the defendant, adding: "This incident has taught me a lot of lessons about the man I want to be. I want to be the complete opposite of him."
George Kovacs, of Ceunant, Caernarfon, Gwynedd, had previously pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has five previous convictions for eight offences including weapons offences but none for violence.
Laura Knightly, for Kovacs, said the defendant lived in a "secluded area" with his wife and children and said he was a hard-working man. She, while in no way excusing his actions on the day in question, said there had been "concerns and fears in the area for some time" and that Kovacs' suspicions of the teenagers and his fears of what might happen "caused him to behave in this out-of-character way". The barrister added that her client thinks he may have blacked out during the incident.
Judge Timothy Petts said in December 2022 Kovacs saw two young men in the vicinity of a property near to where he lived and, believing they were "up to no good", he confronted them. He said he had read references written to the court detailing problems with people misbehaving and causing damage in the rea but he told the defendant: "What you did went far beyond anything you reasonably thought you could do to protect that property."
With a 15% discount for his guilty plea Kovacs was sentenced to 33 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. The defendant was also made the subject of a 10-year restraining order banning him from contacting his victim.

The data leak, which also affects logins for Instagram, Microsoft, Netflix, PayPal, Roblox, Discord, Telegram, GitHub, has given cybercriminals and hackers "unprecedented access to personal credentials" Government services in more than 29 countries were also targeted in the attack, which were most likely obtained with infostealer malware, which can infiltrate systems and steal sensitive information like login details. CyberNews researchers said that another alternative was that the data was collected by ethical hackers to spot flaws in the system. This breach shows how an astronomical number of people are likely continuing to use compromised accounts, making them more at risk of cybercrime. Criminals use personal information to take over accounts, steal identities, and carry out targeted phishing attacks, CyberNews adds. Researchers said in their report: "This is not just a leak – it's a blueprint for mass exploitation. With over 16billion login records exposed, cybercriminals now have unprecedented access to personal credentials that can be used for account takeover, identity theft, and highly targeted phishing." Assisted dying law passes Commons in historic moment In a historic moment in the Commons today, MPs voted to back a landmark bill to change the law on assisted dying in England and Wales. They voted by 314 in favour of the legislation to 291 against - a majority of 23 - as supporters of assisted dying jumped and hugged each other outside Parliament. It means the controversial legislation - spearheaded by the Labour MP Kim Leadbeater - will now pass to the House of Lords where it will be debated by peers. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill aims to give terminally ill people over the age 18 with just six months left to live the option to end their life early. Their decision must be "clear, settled and informed" at every stage - and free from coercion. It must also be subject to approval by two doctors and an expert panel featuring a social worker, senior legal figure and psychiatrist. Assisted dying is currently banned and carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years. Met Office issues thunderstorm warning with 'flash flood' risk despite heatwave Sun-loving Brits are in for a disappointment, as the Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning which is set to temporarily break the scorching heatwave. Our Weather team has covered the yellow warning, which is in place from 3pm tomorrow until 4am Sunday morning in the East Midlands, North East England, North West England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber. The storms could cause sudden flooding that could in turn make the roads difficult to navigate. There could be some road closures as a result, the forecaster added. The flooding could also leave some communities isolated as roads are cut off. The Met Office said that power cuts were also a possibility, with the potential for services to homes and businesses being lost. In the event of lightning strikes, there could be bus and train cancellations in the affected areas. In a statement, it said: "Whilst many places will likely remain dry and unaffected, scattered thunderstorms may develop during Saturday afternoon, lasting through the evening hours, moving northeastwards before eventually clearing to the North Sea by the early hours of Sunday. "The most intense thunderstorms could produce frequent lightning, large hail and gusty winds, along with some heavy downpours for a time. This may lead to some surface water impacts in places. Tory council chief sparks outrage with 'poor people' steak dinner joke In other news, our Politics team has reported on the Tory council chief who is facing calls to quit after posting a picture with the caption: "Wonder what all the poor people are doing?" Norfolk County Council leader Kay Mason Billig posted the photograph of her meal with a £21 bottle of Italian red wine, potatoes in peppercorn sauce and salad to her Facebook friends. But the caption sparked a furious reaction, with tens of thousands of people in Norfolk forced to rely on food banks and her own council runs an £11.8m fund to help people struggling to afford to eat. Mrs Mason Billig, who is entitled to more than £51,000 in allowances from County Hall each year, told the EDP website the sharing of the post beyond her friends was a "personal attack" and a private joke had been misunderstood. However, Steve Morphew, leader of the Labour group at County Hall, said: "People like to have council leaders who show they are in touch, care about the plight of others and show humility and pride in the public positions they hold. This is a nauseating example of the exact opposite. I find nothing amusing here." Multiple primary school children injured after 'mass casualty incident' Finally, our News team has been closely following a disturbing incident in Berlin, where almost 40 children were injured at a primary school after tear gas was sprayed on site. Emergency services rushed to Miriam Makeba School in the city of Moabit at around 9am this morning. Multiple kids complained of shortness of breath and eye irritation after the substance was used in the hallway. Police, firefighters and medics attended the scene and treated 37 pupils. Officials evacuated the building in response to the incident. Worried parents raced to the school to check on their children. An investigation has since been launched into the mass casualty. Police said they are investigating the incident under causing bodily harm, reports BZ Berlin. A spokesperson for the fire services said: "We cared for 37 children and provided outpatient care; none of the children required hospital treatment."

Elsewhere, a 39-year-old man was found badly injured after a 'stabbing' in Ayr. The incident happened at Braeside Road in the town on Tuesday, June 17 at around 10am. The victim was airlifted to Queen ELizabeth Hospital in Glasgow where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
