Maybe Happy Ending, a sweet and futuristic story that follows two obsolete helper robots as they navigate isolation, affection, and what it means to be human, was the big musical winner at the Tony Awards on Sunday, capping a record-grossing post-pandemic Broadway theatre season.
The show won three big awards, including best musical. Darren Criss won his first Tony for best leading actor in a musical for his role as the innocent Oliver, and its director Michael Arden won the award for best director of a musical.
The modern reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic Sunset Blvd. also won big, taking awards for best revival of a musical and for Nicole Scherzinger, who stars as the faded movie star Norma Desmond, won best actress in a musical.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Purpose won the best play award. Written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the play follows a family whose carefully constructed legacy unravels when their youngest son returns home with an unexpected guest, exposing buried secrets and faith-based conflict.
Host Cynthia Erivo, the Wicked film star, opened the show at Radio City Music Hall with a walk to the stage from the dressing room that mimicked actor Tom Francis' viral post-intermission live outdoor Manhattan stroll as he sings the title song in Sunset Blvd.
Buoyed by a post-pandemic rebound, the 2024-25 season grossed a record $1.89 billion in revenue and drew 14.7 million attendees, the Broadway League said.
Cole Escola won the Tony for best lead actor in a play for his creation Oh, Mary! The show, Escola's reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln's life and relationship with husband Abraham Lincoln, blends historical satire with absurd camp. The show also earned Sam Pinkleton the Tony for best director of a play.
TV's Succession star Sarah Snook, who made her Broadway debut this season, won the award for best leading actress in a play for her tour-de-force performance of more than two dozen roles in The Picture of Dorian Gray.
The original cast of Hamilton, including the show's creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, reunited to perform an electric medley in honour of the musical's 10th anniversary. The number also served as a reintroduction to Leslie Odom Jr as Aaron Burr, a role he will resume in the production later this year for a limited time.
Francis Jue won best actor in a featured role in a play for Yellow Face. He thanked the Asian American actors who came before him and addressed the next generation: "This community sees you and I hope that encourages you to be brave, and to dream and to dream big." Reuters

A pink ruffled dress with white lace and big bow; a high-school vibe tartan dress tied with a pale yellow shawl imprinted with Mexico's patron saint the Virgin of Guadalupe, all accentuated with loud heavy makeup. Segovia, known to her friends as Kumiko, calls her work Chicanjuku: a fusion of Mexican-American Chicano culture and Japanese Harajuku style, named after the Tokyo district renowned for its bright colored accessories, outlandish makeup, and elaborate hairstyles. "It's like a food blender of styles," Segovia said of her designs, which have also become a core part of her identity. Chicano style was popularised by Mexican-Americans in the US who felt out of place in both countries because of their mixed backgrounds, said Segovia. Though she is not Mexican-American, she has several relatives in the US who inspired her deep love for the style she now draws from. Segovia, who has almost 30 thousand followers on Instagram, mashes the oversize shirts, khakis and flat brim caps analogous to Chicano culture with the candy-floss fairy-tale pop of Harajuku. The makeup might include dark lining around the lips and eyeliner that emulates Japanese Geisha style. "You can always experiment with fashion and art as long as it's from a place of knowledge and respect," Segovia said. Segovia's distinctive aesthetic has even caught the eye of admirers in Japan. In June, she made special outfits for three Japanese E-Queens, a subculture of electronic music dancers, who she connected with months earlier online. The group met up in Mexico City for a photo shoot and street dance, dressed in Segovia's outfits. "I love how she uses texture," said Shirendev Oyun-Erdenen, a Japanese E-Queen who dances under the name Maaya the Bee. "Helping people feel free to experiment and not be afraid. Chris Brown pleads not guilty to London nightclub assault charges
Grammy-winning artist Chris Brown appeared in court in London on Friday, June 20, where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm stemming from a 2023 nightclub incident. The 36-year-old singer is accused of assaulting music producer Abraham Diaw at the upscale Tape nightclub in Mayfair in what prosecutors have described as an unprovoked attack. Brown is alleged to have struck Diaw multiple times with a tequila bottle before continuing the assault by punching and kicking him. Prosecutors also stated the violent episode was caught on surveillance footage and witnessed by numerous club-goers. Alongside Brown, fellow musician and friend Omololu Akinlolu, known professionally as Hoody Baby, also pleaded not guilty to the same charge. Additional charges were added to Brown's indictment ahead of Friday's hearing. These include assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon—in this case, the bottle allegedly used in the attack. However, the court has adjourned Brown's plea on these new charges until July 11. Brown, who performed to a packed stadium in Cardiff just hours before his court appearance, is currently out on bail set at £5 million (approximately $6.75 million). The substantial bail amount enabled him to begin his world tour earlier this month despite the looming legal case. The trial is set to begin on October 26, 2026. Until then, Brown will remain free under bail conditions while continuing to face serious legal scrutiny over the alleged violent incident.
