New intercity bus between Dubai and Sharjah from May 2
A new intercity bus between Dubai and Sharjah is set to begin operating on May 2, while some changes to existing routes will also begin, the Roads and Transport Authority announced on Monday.
The bus will connect Stadium Bus Station in Dubai to Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah. The fare for a one-way journey was set at AED12.
Adel Shakeri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA's Public Transport Agency, said that RTA is committed to expanding the public bus network and improving its integration with other transit modes, such as the metro, tram, and marine transport. 'Enhancing intermodal connectivity is central to positioning public transport as the preferred choice for mobility across the emirate,' he added.
Effective May 2, the RTA will also implement some changes:
Route 17: Now terminates at Baniyas Square Metro Station instead of Al Sabkha Bus Station.
Route 24: Re-routed within the Al Nahda 1 area.
Route 44: Re-routed from Al Rebat Street to serve Dubai Festival City.
Route 56: Extended to reach DWC Staff Village.
Routes 66 & 67: A new stop added at Al Ruwayah Farm area.
Route 32C: Service between Al Jafiliya Bus Station and Al Satwa Bus Station has been curtailed. Passengers travelling to Al Satwa may use Route F27 for continued service.
Route C26: The bus stop has been moved from Al Jafiliya Bus Station to Max Metro Land Side Bus Stop 2.
Route E16: Now terminates at Union Bus Station instead of Al Sabkha Bus Station.
Route F12: The section between Al Satwa Roundabout and Al Wasl Park has been curtailed; route now re-routed via Kuwait Street.
Route F27: Bus stop relocated from Al Jafiliya Bus Station to Max Metro Land Side Bus Stop 2.
Route F47: Re-routed within Jebel Ali Industrial Area.
Route F54: Extended to serve the new JAFZA South labour camp.

Matar Al Tayer, RTA's Director General and Board Chair, noted that 'passenger numbers during New Year's Eve exceed 110,000, and the station has recorded an average annual ridership growth of 7.5 per cent over the past five years'. Since the station's opening in 2010, usage has climbed steadily. Annual traffic grew from 6.13 million in 2013 to 7.254 million in 2016, rising further to 7.885 million by 2019. Following a swift jump in the last few years, it reached 10.202 million in 2023 and climbed again to 10.577 million in 2024—an average of nearly 58,000 passengers daily. ADVERTISEMENT The enhancement extends beyond mere enlargement. It includes upgraded station entrances, pedestrian bridges, expanded concourse and platform zones, and fresh escalators and lifts. Separating entry and exit gates will enhance passenger flow while more fare gates and commercial units are expected to bolster non-fare revenue. Aligned with Dubai Metro's modern design ethos, the station retains its seashell-inspired architecture. The design emphasises visibility, ease of movement, and shorter walking distances. Planners have also ensured integration with feeder buses, bicycle racks, e‑scooter zones and a climate-controlled walkway to Dubai Mall—features that largely support accessibility, including for people of determination, seniors and families with strollers. Looking ahead, the RTA projects demand growth extending through 2040. By pre‑emptively expanding capacity now, officials aim to ensure the station remains a resilient gateway into Downtown Dubai amid mounting urban density and event-driven spikes. Commercial upgrades form part of the broader strategy, with additional retail and dining outlets planned to offset operational costs and enhance passenger convenience. Landscaping improvements are also part of the upgrade, intended to enrich the station precinct and its adjacent pedestrian arteries. The station, positioned at Metro code 25 on the Red Line, opened on 4 January 2010 alongside Burj Khalifa, and has since matured into one of the system's busiest interchanges. In December 2012, a covered, temperature-controlled footbridge featuring ten travellators opened, eliminating the need for feeder bus transfers to Dubai Mall.

In 2022, the figure climbed to 8.827 million, surpassed 10.202 million in 2023 (56,000 daily average), and exceeded 10.577 million in 2024, with nearly 58,000 daily boarding and alightings.'
