National Day plans in motion

KUALA LUMPUR: Themed Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni (Prioritising the People), this year's National Day 2025 celebrations will feature an array of events, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the National Day logo featuring Malaysia Madani will also be maintained until 2027.
'The theme portrays the government's priority to ensure the welfare of the rakyat will be emphasised,' he said when launching the theme and logo at Angkasapuri here yesterday.
Fahmi said National Day 2025 will commence with the launch event on July 25 in Muar, Johor, while the main event on Aug 31 will once again be held at Dataran Putrajaya.
To further strengthen the unity of the country's regions and states, Malaysia Day on Sept 16 will be held in Penang, he added.
'Choosing Penang as the venue is in line with the rotation practice among Sabah, Sarawak and states in the peninsula to further strengthen the unity among the territories and states,' he explained.
He also said that several programmes have been outlined leading up to the main event in August and September, including 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang, Merdeka Countdown, Quran Hour and Wayang Pacak Merdeka.
'The flying of the Jalur Gemilang campaign this year will see an addition of two new clusters – industry and government agencies – on top of five clusters from last year.
'This campaign is to encourage the rakyat to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises to show respect and care for the country,' said Fahmi, who is also the National Day and Malaysia Day Main Committee chairman.
He urged the public to support the grand celebrations nationwide.

Fahmi: Universities must equip students to face uncertainty, change
KUALA LUMPUR: The experience of pursuing higher education should be about embracing change, nurturing adaptability and building well-rounded global citizens, said Lembah Pantai member of parliament Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Speaking at the launch of the Lembah Pantai Scholarship 2025 today, Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, urged students to approach their university years with openness and curiosity, despite having their paths change along the way. "The whole idea about university to me is to build well-rounded citizens, global citizens. "(To have) people that will be able to adapt themselves, will have the faculty and the frame of mind not only to embrace change and progress, but also build things better," he said. The scholarship launched today, targeted specifically at students in the Lembah Pantai constituency, is part of a broader effort to help young people find and fund the right educational pathway for themselves. The Lembah Pantai Scholarship 2025, introduced by Uni Enrol in collaboration with leading Malaysian private institutions will award 17 full scholarships to the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia students from schools in the constituency. Eligible students include those from households earning below RM8,000 or those who have represented their state or country in sports. The initiative was launched alongside the signing of a strategic investment partnership between Uni Enrol and the Global Education Alliance (GEA), a leading international education group. The collaboration is set to strengthen Malaysia's position as a regional hub for higher education access, particularly for transnational pathways to study destinations such as the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, recalling his own experience at Purdue University in the United States, Fahmi shared how entering unfamiliar territory helped shape his perspective. He said it was this openness to change that later helped him navigate life's unexpected turns, including his journey into politics. "I never dreamed that 25 years down the line I would end up being a lawmaker and a minister," he said. Fahmi said today's students have access to more tools and platforms to guide them in their educational choices, helping them find a better fit for their interests and ambitions. He added that platforms such as the Uni Enrol and GEA which have now made matching students to the right courses and universities easier, were not available during his time. "Having these few tools, especially in these times, affords a lot more room for students to find a better match, whether that match will turn out as what they thought it would be. "But whether that match will turn out as what they thought it would be, that is for them to discover.

Razarudin floats police ministry proposal

The newly retired Inspector-General of Police said he proposed the move because of PDRM's size and significance with other key sectors such as defence, health and education. He said the idea is in line with international practices in countries such as China, Brazil, Vietnam, South Korea and Brunei where police forces are overseen by their own ministries. 'I see this as a crucial step to ensure PDRM remains relevant and capable, especially in adapting to the demands of globalisation and the digital era,' Razarudin said in his speech during the handing-over ceremony and official retirement send-off yesterday. Razarudin handed over the reins as the country's top cop to Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail. He also called for Malaysia to host the Interpol General Assembly in 2028. 'Four officers will be directly involved with the Interpol Joint Working Group. 'As a show of trust, confidence and commitment of our officers, the leadership of the force will suggest to the government via the Home Minister that Malaysia hosts the Interpol General Assembly in 2028,' he said. Razarudin also said that enhancing training and human capital development of the police force begins at the basic policing training programme level through the police diploma programmes. 'Currently, one out of four diploma programmes, namely the Diploma in Police Management, successfully obtained accreditation under the Malaysian Qualifications Agency in May. 'The remaining accreditation for the three programmes is expected to be decided at the end of July,' he said. 'For the same purpose, instructors at the Police College are also required to possess at least a bachelor's degree to meet the necessary competency standards.'

Fahmi: New power tariff part of major reforms

Fahmi, who is also the Madani government spokesperson, said the initiative aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap, which aims to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions by 2050. 'Under the new tariff schedule, 85% of domestic consumers or account holders are expected to enjoy the same, or even lower, electricity rates starting July 1, provided their monthly usage does not exceed 1,000 kilowatt hours,' he told reporters at the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya's Kita Madani Carnival here yesterday. On Friday, the Energy Commission announced that more than 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will benefit from fairer and more progressive electricity rates due to the new electricity tariff schedule approved by the government. On a separate matter, Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is the best platform to manage ethical issues involving journalists, including the recent social media post of an infographic regarding the appointment of Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail by a local newspaper. Fahmi described the infographic as having given an inaccurate narrative impact and causing defamation. 'I was quite surprised by the publication of an infographic that was incorrect, very incorrect, because I have never seen Datuk Khalid in any event, meeting or convention or party congress. So that is slander for me. It is very bad. 'We have just established the Media Council, but the structures have not been established yet. But for me, in a situation like this, the Media Council is the best platform for us to manage issues, including journalistic ethics,' he said, Bernama reported. Recently, a local newspaper posted an infographic of Mohd Khalid's biodata on social media, which stated that he had held a high position in PKR. The newspaper has since removed the social media post and made a public apology. It is understood that there have been reports made by the public regarding the publication.
