Germany halts Afghan refugee admission flights pending new government decision

Reuters23-04-2025

BERLIN, April 23 (Reuters) - Germany's outgoing government has suspended flights for voluntary admissions of Afghan refugees for two weeks pending a decision by the next government on how to proceed, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, the future governing coalition of conservatives and Social Democrats (SPD) agreed to curb irregular migration, reflecting a mounting public backlash after several violent attacks by migrants as well as increasing pressure on housing and other infrastructure.

After the Western allies' hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, Germany felt a strong obligation to protect former local staff of German agencies and humanitarian organisations there, and established several programmes to resettle them along with particularly vulnerable Afghans.
According to the Federal Foreign Office, a total of 36,000 people have entered Germany under such voluntary programmes, including a good 20,000 who were local staff and their families.
Around 2,600 people approved for admission by Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) are currently waiting in Pakistan for a German visa and charter flights, 350 of whom are former local employees, the foreign office added.
In addition to receiving admission approval, applicants must complete a visa process and security screening involving the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the Federal Police, and the Federal Criminal Police Office.
The current Greens-led foreign ministry said that existing admission confirmations were legally binding and could only be revoked under specific conditions. This meant it could be difficult for the new government to cancel them regardless of who takes over the interior or foreign ministries.
Germany's outgoing government arranged several resettlement flights in recent weeks, drawing criticism from conservative politicians who argued that the SPD-Greens coalition was rushing to admit new arrivals before it hands over.
"For several weeks now, we've been seeing planes arrive in Germany on a daily basis. I believe that's wrong. It creates the impression that an outgoing federal government is trying to establish facts on the ground in its final days," Thorsten Frei, a parliamentary leader of the conservative bloc, said.
ProAsyl, a German NGO providing legal help to asylum seekers, warned that halting the final rescue flights would leave vulnerable Afghans at risk of torture or death if returned to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
"The German government itself has determined their endangerment ... A return or deportation to Afghanistan could mean torture or even death for them," said Wiebke Judith, ProAsyl legal policy spokesperson.

With independence, Scotland could become a beacon for peace

Firstly Scotland is acting as a staging post for the US bombing missions in Iran and their assistance to Israel's war. Prestwick Airport, which is owned by the Scottish Government, has seen large numbers of US war plans landing and being refuelled on their way to wage war on Iran and to assist the Israeli war effort. It's time the Scottish Government closed this route for war by banning US war planes at Prestwick. READ MORE: Scotland may be 'complicit in war crimes' allowing US to use Prestwick Secondly, if this war in the Middle East extends to a global war, Scotland's nuclear base at Faslane will be the number one target for attack, and if it's hit then much of Glasgow will disappear. Surely it's time that this expensive and ineffective nuclear base was closed. Thirdly, Scottish arms industries are supplying the Israeli war machines with vital spare parts and it's time this was ended. Of course I realise that none of this can be achieved while Scotland is part of the UK and where Starmer's Labour government is guilty of failing to condemn Israel for genocide in Gaza or the US for its warlike interventions. Instead, they are grovelling to Trump in the hope of crumbs from his table. Support for Scottish independence has reached a new high of 56% recently. Let's turn that into a pro-independence majority in the Scottish Parliament elections next year. If that happens, the Scottish Parliament should declare our independence, end our complicity in war and instead make Scotland a beacon for peace in the world. Hugh Kerr (former MEP) Edinburgh ARE nuclear weapons defensive or offensive? It seems the answer depends on whether the UK Government is talking about a lauded 'friend' or a condemned 'foe', a supposedly 'democratically elected' President or a supposedly 'expertly elected' Ayatollah. The obscene devastation in Gaza and unabated slaughter of its people on the pretext of responding to the horrendous terrorist acts of October 7 is a totally disproportionate portend of what an expansionist, war-mongering, fanatical regime might impose on the rest of the Middle East if Iran is neutered militarily. This may suit Western governments (which appear to have learned little from the catastrophic consequences of war rhetoric ahead of the illegal invasion of Iraq), with 'energy companies' keen to further exploit Iran and the region's massive oil and gas reserves, but when will the British public stand up and say 'enough is enough'? READ MORE: UK providing 'political cover' for US and Israel after Iran attack Proscribing a protest group as a terrorist organisation for spray-paint vandalism would simply demonstrate how far the UK Government, aided and abetted by much of the UK mainstream media, is prepared to go in order to justify its lethal bias in the Middle East, where an out-of-control despot intent on obliterating cities and massacring civilians wreaks generational havoc. Scotland, as an independent country, could choose a different path by genuinely promoting global nuclear disarmament and by ending compelled complicity in the actions of a 'British state' still posturing as a global super-power in order to feed the greed of international capitalist moguls and the wealthy British establishment while more inconsolable mothers cradle lifeless children in their forlorn arms. Stan Grodynski Longniddry, East Lothian ARE we really expected to believe that British planes are working with the Israelis only to help find the hostages, and only information pertinent to this is given to the Israelis and shared with the US? Why are the hostages still not found? Why are British spy planes still flying over Gaza? Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and wounded since May 27th, when the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began distributing food in southern Gaza. On June 17, at least 51 people were killed and 200 wounded, including children, while waiting for food. This allows the IDF to run further amok in the Occupied Territories, destroying homes and businesses. What will be the end result of this destruction? The Riviera of the Middle East? Keir Starmer is so enamoured with his 'special relationship' with Donald Trump and his rhetoric about Israel's right to defend itself that he ignores the message of the many thousands of UK citizens who march in protest against the treatment of the Palestinians and especially the carnage in Gaza. Sophocles gives a message from the past that is so relevant for now: 'whoever makes his journey to a tyrant's court becomes his slave, although he went there a free man'. Marion McPherson Ayr PALESTINE Action stage a protest at an RAF base and the Home Secretary announces she plans to proscribe them. READ MORE: Mark Brown: Donald Trump's ultimatum is a threat to Iran and the Middle East In the US, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testified before congress in March that Iran had a stock of materials but was not building nuclear weapons. President Trump did not challenge this, but now says she was 'wrong' and that intelligence showed Iran had a 'tremendous amount of material' and could have a nuclear weapon 'within months'. Ms Gabbard has now made a statement to the effect that Iran could produce nuclear weapons 'within weeks' and that her March testimony (which seemed crystal clear at the time ) had been taken out of context by 'dishonest media'! Inside Operation Midnight Hammer: How Trump carried out unprecedented Iran attack using decoys in 37-hour covert mission

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AMERICA'S colossal bomb raid on Iran's key nuclear sites was a masterclass in military might and strategy "months in the making", officials said. Covert tactics and the world's biggest conventional bombs came together in a "spectacular success", according to Trump, which caught the Iranians completely off-guard. While the world now waits to see how Iran and its Axis of Evil will respond, the US has shared details of its daring Operation Midnight Hammer. General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said: 'This was a complex and high-risk mission carried out with exceptional skill and discipline by our Joint Force." Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said: "Our B-2s went in and out and back without the world knowing at all." The mission was simple: to inflict serious damage on Iran's nuclear programme so that it is unable to produce nuclear weapons. Plans were worked for months, and the key groundwork was laid by Trump on Thursday when he announced a two-week delay to his decision about striking Iran. It's now clear that was a ploy to lull the regime into a false sense of security. The full mobilisation began on Friday night when a unit of B-2 bombers took off from the US at midnight. Some of the planes flew west towards the Pacific, leading analysts to suggest they might be heading to the UK's Diego Garcia base - but that was a decoy. Only "an extremely small number of planners and key leaders" knew the truth about the ruse, General Caine said. Trump's shock Iran strikes take us to bring of global conflict and will strengthen Axis of Evil alliance, experts warn The actual fleet comprised of seven B-2 spirit bombers, which quietly set off east over the Atlantic. Each was manned by a crew of two, but the pilots were instructed to stick to minimal communication to avoid detection. It was an 18-hour non-stop journey to reach the target area, so the bombers had to refuel multiple times in the air by linking up with escort and support aircraft. Mid-air synchronisation is difficult enough, but crews had to maintain minimal comms whilst lining up. At half past midnight Iranian time, a US submarine launched more than two dozen Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles at the Isfahan nuclear site in east Iran. This coincided with the bomber squad entering Iranian airspace - undetected. 8 Trump played a feint by suggesting he would mull the strikes for two weeks Credit: Splash 8 Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has refused to surrender and now says diplomacy is off the cards Credit: AP Decoy and scout planes swooped out ahead of the main unit to scan for and distract any awaiting Iranian defence jets - but there were none. The protection group stood ready to launch preemptive fire on any surface-to-air threats, such as air defence systems, but not a single shot was fired at the operatives. Go-time was 2:10am - the midst of the Iranian night. Over a period of just 25 minutes, the bombers released their powerful payload. Officials revealed that about 75 precision-guided weapons were unleashed in total. Amongst these were 14 of the famed "bunker-buster" bombs dropped on the mountain-fortress Fordow plant. Israel had not even attempted to destroy this facility, buried beneath 300ft of rock and steel, because it knew only US's superbombs could do the job. The B-2s were programmed to drop one bomb, followed by another shortly afterwards onto the exact same point of impact. 8 Residential buildings in Tel Avid were damaged by Iranian missiles the morning after the US strikes Credit: Getty 8 A graphic displayed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demonstrating the operation Credit: Getty It was the first time that the 30,000-pound GBU, 57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs) had been deployed in a live combat situation. Caine said: 'Our forces remain on high alert and are fully postured to respond to any Iranian retaliation or proxy attacks, which would be an incredibly poor choice. 'We will defend ourselves. The safety of our service members and civilians remains our highest priority. 'This mission demonstrates the unmatched reach, coordination and capability of the United States military. 'In just a matter of weeks, this went from strategic planning to global execution. 'This operation underscores the unmatched capabilities and global reach of the United States military."

Iran update as it declares it has struck back against US bombing action

Iran update as it declares it has struck back against US bombing action The nation has been bombed by American B-2 stealth bombers that US President Donald Trump said had 'obliterated' their targets Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in January 2025 (Photo) (Image: Getty/ 2025 Contributor#8523328 ) Iran has announced it has retaliated against US military strikes on three of its nuclear facilities. The eyes of the world had been waiting to see how Iran might respond after the bombings by B-2 stealth bombers. Nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan were targeted by the Trump administration overnight. The US President said the sites had been completely 'obliterated' - although subsequent US statements have not gone this far. ‌ There has been intense speculation Iran might target US military sites in the Middle East or take other measures such as shutting off the vital shipping route the Strait of Hormuz. Reports from Reuters and elswhere this afternoon suggest action in the strait remains under discussion. ‌ But as USA warned Iran of the risks of retaliating, Iran announced that it had actually already responded. The Financial Times reports that Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said 'powerful strikes' on Israel on Sunday morning were actually retaliation for the US activity. 'The attacks were in fact a response to the US aggressive policies, because the Zionist regime basically lacks the capacity and courage to stage attacks on the Islamic republic by itself,' Pezeshkian said at a cabinet meeting. 'The US attacks on our nuclear installations clearly showed that it was the main driver behind the Zionist regime's hostile actions against the Islamic republic." An Iranian strike hit a residential neighbourhood in Tel Aviv on Sunday morning. At least 16 people were reportedly injured. Article continues below Israel announced on Sunday that it had closed its airspace to both inbound and outbound flights in the wake of the US attacks. What has US military said about the US strikes on Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan? In new media briefings within the last hour, America said it 'does not seek war' with Iran. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth made the claim in the aftermath of the US attack. The mission, called Operation Midnight Hammer, involved decoys and deception, and met with no Iranian resistance, Mr Hegseth and US Air Force General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a Pentagon news conference on Sunday. Article continues below Mr Hegseth said it is important to note the US strikes did not target Iranian troops or the Iranian people. The words might be seen as a veiled effort to indicate to Tehran they do not want retaliation on American targets in the region. 'This mission was not and has not been about regime change,' Mr Hegseth added. Mr Caine said the aim of the operation – destroying nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan – had been achieved. US President Donald Trump earlier claimed the facilities had been 'completely and fully obliterated'. 'Final battle damage will take some time, but initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction,' Mr Caine said.
