First Details Revealed From Netflix Animated Spinoff Series STRANGER THINGS: TALES FROM '85 — GeekTyrant
This week at Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Netflix showed up to present fans with a first look at the animated spinoff series, Stranger Things: Tales From '85 , described as a family spectacle blending nostalgia with supernatural intrigue.
Netflix's official logline for the series reads: 'Welcome back to Hawkins in the stark winter of 1985, where the original characters must fight new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town in Stranger Things: Tales From '85, an epic new animated series.'
With animation headed by Australian outfit Flying Bark, the show is being executive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer via their Upside Down Pictures, along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via 21 Laps, Eric Robles, – who is showrunning the series – via Flying Bark Productions and Hilary Leavitt from Upside Down Pictures.
It is early days, and no images have even been released, but Robles talked a packed Annecy crowd through some of the animatics, character design, scary creatures – including some terrifying upside down pumpkin zombies and a snow shark.
Robles revealed many of the projects that have inspired Tales From '85 but it is one above all that became his 'north star.' 'It all went back to The Real Ghostbusters ,' he said. 'It was silly but had a handful of dark, creepy episodes and we just kept talking about that. That became the north star for us.'
Other inspirations cited by Robles, who drew on projects old and new for his show about 'friendships, horror-filled story and mystery,' included Transformers, ET and Goosebumps .
'The vision is kids riding bikes, using walkie-talkies,' he added. Making an animated show replete with danger was a new experience for Robles. 'There's danger and not everyone might survive,' he added. 'The danger is real and that had an impact on the design.'
Stranger Things: Tales From '85 comes out next year.

In the United States, sports betting is everywhere, essentially inescapable for a sports fan. As the industry grows, people are becoming more and more aware of gambling addictions and the risks of making them more accessible. The aftermath of Ricciardo's announcement was a wave of negative comments under the post, many of which were disappointed by his promotion of a gambling company. "Would have supported the tailgate business idea without the direct link to a betting company, man. Disappointed," a user commented. "What a shame. You're shilling for a gambling company. JFC. Surely you don't need the money that badly," another said. "Seriously mate? Money that tight is it? Of all the things you choose to put your name and face on you chose gambling? So bloody disappointing," a third added. "Yikes! Considering Aussies gamblers have the highest losses per capita in the world and a high rate of teenagers on gambling sites, this isn't it DR," a person posted. "Come on mate I'm a massive fan but this isn't at all something good to put your name to. Gambling destroys lives, surely there's better things to work with," a fifth person said. Ricciardo is far from the only athlete to take money from a gambling company, but his set of fans have shared their disappointment over his willingness to promote the vice. The Australian racer left F1 back in 2024 after being replaced during the season by Liam Lawson at Racing Bulls. Red Bull Racing gave him another opportunity with the team in 2023, hoping he would beat out teammate Yuki Tsunoda and rebuild his confidence, but it never clicked. After several races, the higher-ups at Red Bull decided to give Lawson a look, leaving Ricciardo on the outside looking in. Since leaving, Ricciardo has promoted his wine company and clothing brand while staying away from the limelight until now. Given the negative reaction, it will be interesting to see if he continues to advertise Dabble or calls an end to the tailgate party.

Jake Weary: Playing charismatic Cane on 'Waterfront' is a game changer

Photo courtesy of Netflix NEW YORK, June 21 (UPI) -- Animal Kingdom and Walking Dead: Dead City actor Jake Weary says he wanted to star in The Waterfront because the new Netflix drama gives him the chance to play a type of character he doesn't usually get offered. "It was a character that I've never really explored before, someone who is really outwardly charismatic and charming and trying to use his charms to get certain things and manipulate people," Weary, 35, told UPI in a phone interview Thursday. "I'd always played more introverted characters and characters that are harboring secrets and there's just a lot of darkness," he said. "There are elements there with Cane, but I think, for the most part, he's someone that actually smiles. I usually play characters that just scowl all the time, so I thought it was kind of a nice game changer for me." Now streaming on Netflix, the show was written-produced by Dawson's Creek and Scream creator Kevin Williamson. It follows the Buckleys, a wealthy North Carolina family as they try to save their fishing empire by smuggling drugs. Weary plays Cane Buckley, while Holt McCallany plays his father Harlan, Maria Bello plays his mother Belle and Melissa Benoist plays his older sister Bree. "I always thought Cane is kind of the glue that kept the family together," the actor said. "I feel like he's the one that creates the big Buckley family group chat, just to check in with everybody," he added. "When he notices that the family is in dire straits, he really jumps at the opportunity to take the bull by the horns and fix things." Weary and his co-stars quickly bonded when they arrived on the show's set in North Carolina. The actor described himself and Bello as "besties" and said they frequently text since she has been working out of the country and haven't been able to see each other for awhile. "And me and Holt have this really, really strong relationship, too, because I think there are a lot of parallels in our lives," he added. "We both had mothers who were big-time divas. His mother was a ballroom singer and my mom was a soap opera actress," Weary said, referring to McCallany's mother, entertainer Julie Wilson, and his own, Guiding Light icon Kim Zimmer. "We both grew up on the East Coast and have similar interests and can, literally, talk for hours. Having the two of them together [Bello and McCallany] together was just a dream come true." Further connecting the cast and crew was the fact that Hurricane Helene ravaged North Carolina while they were there. "There's a lot of people on the crew whose homes were affected by the hurricane," Weary recalled. "You could see how it brought the crew together. In a viral TikTok video shared in June under the username @thegood_pirate, Baden LeSueur shares what a "realistic day as a solo pirate treasure hunter" looks like. It starts with a golden sunrise and a cup of coffee, before he sets sail to find local hidden treasures. After climbing a palm tree to get a fresh coconut on Hammerhead Bay, and leaving his pup to nap peacefully, LeSueur grabs his metal detector and starts the search. Immediately, the metal detector starts beeping, signaling something is underneath. However, when LeSueur unearths the finding, it turns out to be just a coin. Refusing to give up just yet, he continues the search, and after finding a bunch of waste, he finally gets another beep. "I see a tiny bit a gold and at this point my heart is racing; I wonder if it's real gold," LeSueur can be heard saying in the clip, as he showcases his finding, a 22-carat gold ring with a red stone on top, which he still hasn't been able to identify. But his goal was always to save up for a catamaran of his own that he could use to sail around the world. "I used to post lots of ocean content and dreamed about producing my own videos to inspire people and help fund my adventures out on the sea. One day, I decided to take the gamble, sold everything, and bought a broken-down boat down in Sydney. This is when my online career really kicked off," LeSueur said. Now he lives full-time on his catamaran with his number-one crew mate, his pup Kida, who follows him on his daily adventures. LeSueur said: "From battling storms, to catching our own meals so we can eat, to finding people's long lost treasure on the bottom of the seabed and the crystal-white beaches along the Australian shoreline. With any luck, I'll hopefully be able to return the lost items to their owner or sell to a jeweler to help cover the costs of boat maintenance." The pair eat a lot of what they catch along the way, spearfishing and lots of coconuts. LeSueur also always makes sure to have appropriate safety equipment and protocol on board, to keep himself and his companion safe. He checks he is always carrying an emergency position-indicating radiobeacon (EPIRB), and that he always lets someone know where he is and where he is headed. "My dream is to continue the adventure, live off the ocean, and hunt for artifacts and treasure around the world. Since sharing my content, people call me 'The Good Pirate.' Sailing has been in my blood ever since I was a kid. My dad was a sailor and his dad was also a sailor. As a child, we spent a lot of time on the water," LeSueur added. Among his findings, there has been "mostly junk," but also some occasional rings made of platinum, silver, or gold. LeSueur said: "We've also found lots of coins, which I use to do my laundry. "Every day is an adventure, even from a sail tearing in 35 knots of wind to a glass-out sunset with fish under the boat. Each day is an adventure," he added. The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received almost 60,000 views and more than 6,000 likes on the platform. One user, James, commented: "I'm stuck doing my dead job while you're doing this …" Mike said: "Do you run any calculations on your lucky finds? I curious how much money does a pirate do from selling the gold." Betty added: "What an incredible find! Must have been an amazing feeling to uncover such a treasure."
