'To be a small part of something bigger is my goal' says Madhavan on Kesari Chapter 2
Madhavan believes that,
Kesari Chapter 2
has a profound effect on audiences one that goes far beyond just a typical viewing experience. As he puts it, the impact "seeps into one's very bones."
In a recent interview with
Mid Day,
Madhavan shared a memorable moment from the filming of
3 Idiots
, recalling that during production, he had warned director Rajkumar Hirani that it would be hard for him to top that film. Now, he says,
Kesari Chapter 2
has that same special quality.
In the historical drama, Madhavan plays Neville McKinley, the Crown's lawyer, who appears in a crucial yet secondary role. The film tells the story of C. Sankaran Nair (played by Akshay Kumar) and his confrontation with the British Raj over its involvement in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. While Madhavan's role may not be the most prominent, he believes it fits perfectly with his aim to be part of meaningful stories.
'To be a small part of something bigger is my goal," he explained. "If the plot pans out, everyone wins."
Madhavan's choice to work on such films reflects his preference for stories with depth over chasing popularity. He remarked that he's never concerned with how much time he spends on screen or how his image is portrayed. In fact, he even admitted that he's never asked about the size of his face on a poster.
When he first joined
Kesari Chapter 2
, Madhavan was reassured that the film was being made for the right reasons. His trust in the project deepened after seeing Akshay Kumar's dedication. Madhavan recalled a phone call he received from Akshay two weeks before the film's release, at 4 a.m. "Even though their battle is progressing smoothly, his character will emerge victorious in the end,' Madhavan said. Despite his smaller role, he wanted to ensure the film ended with a significant final scene. Akshay flew down from Dubai, and Madhavan from Chennai, to film it just two weeks before the release, showing the effort and commitment involved.
Now, as Madhavan reflects on his career, he values films that have an emotional connection with audiences. "It's the first time I've ever seen an audience patiently waiting for the final credits to roll," he said. He believes that the fate of a film often lies in the editing process. A large-scale movie might feel soulless, he explained, while a smaller film made for the right reasons can become a surprise hit, just like
Tanu Weds Manu
or
Tanu Weds Manu Returns
.
In the end, for Madhavan, it's not about popularity or fame – it's about the story and the emotions that resonate with the audience.
Kesari Chapter 2
seems to be the perfect reflection of this philosophy.

Housefull 5 Second Saturday Box Office Estimates: Akshay Kumar starrer stays in race to emerge a mid-range success in India
Tarun Mansukhani's Housefull 5 led by Akshay Kumar is still getting audiences in its 3rd weekend, despite some stiff competition from Sitaare Zameen Par. After ending its first 2 weeks in India collecting Rs 151.75 crore net, the movie managed Rs 1.50 crore on its third Friday. Today, that is on its third Saturday, the movie has collected Rs 1.80 crore, to take the total to Rs 155.05 crore. Another Rs 2 crore on Sunday will take the comic-caper to Rs 157.05 crore net. The Day Wise Net India Collections Of Housefull 5 Are As Under Particulars India Net Collection Week 1 Rs 114.40 crore Week 2 Rs 37.35 crore 3rd Friday Rs 1.50 crore 3rd Saturday Rs 1.80 crore Total Rs 155.05 crore net Housefull 5 remains on course to emerge a mid-range success. Although a mid-range success is not that great a result for a franchise film with a cent percent hit track-record, it is not as bad as many of the big films that have released post-pandemic. It could have been worse given the initial perception of the movie that was created. Housefull 5 Opened Well But The Trend Over The Weekdays Was Not Strong The first weekend numbers of Housefull 5 were good and it is the weekday trend that was weak, resulting in a lower than required second week. Had the word of mouth been favourable, it would have crossed Rs 200 crore net and settled for a lifetime number in the range of Rs 250 crore net. The overseas haul of USD 6.75-7 million could have been more like 10 million with favourable reception, pushing the film's global numbers close to Rs 375 crore instead of Rs 265-275 crore gross. Housefull 5's Reception Proves That Branded Content Still Works One thing that is clear is that branded content is working and the final result of Housefull 5, which is decent but underwhelming, should not make it seem like focus should shift away from sequels. Akshay Kumar has a bunch of branded (Sequel/IP) content up for release, from Welcome To The Jungle to Jolly LLB 3, up for release in the next one year. There also is OMG 3 that is in the works. Housefull 5 In Theatres Housefull 5 still plays in theatres now. Have you watched the movie yet? Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates on Akshay Kumar and Housefull 5

23 years of Awara Paagal Deewana: 5 Bollywood comedies that bring the same madness
Awara Paagal Deewana gained a cult following upon its June 2002 release, thanks to its brand of frantic comedy, sleek action, and eccentric characters. Famous for its Hollywood-inspired stunts, over-the-top comedy, and a plot that wove between diamonds, dons, and double-crosses, the film was directed by Vikram Bhatt and featured a strong ensemble of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Aftab Shivdasani, and Johnny Lever. On the film's 23rd anniversary, we take a look at other Bollywood films that manage to convey the same sense of comedic chaos by skilfully combining elements of slapstick, crime, and bewilderment. Awara Paagal Deewana poster Laugh out loud with Chal Mere Bhai, Anari No. 1, and Haseena Maan Jayegi—stream these classic Bollywood comedies now on OTTplay Premium. Another multi-hero ensemble film starring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Suniel Shetty, Deewane Huye Paagal by Vikram Bhatt is an energy-filled spiritual sequel. Similar to Awara Paagal Deewana in many ways, this film is rife with ridiculous misunderstandings, cartoonish antagonists, and hilarious set pieces as its protagonists (Rimi Sen) pursue each other while pretending to be someone else. Apna Sapna Money Money The wild energy is still there, but the action is disguised humour in the Sangeeth Sivan film. Starring as a con artist who pulls off a heist while posing as a woman, Riteish Deshmukh leads the cast. The film recalls the carefree spirit of Awara Paagal Deewana with its protagonists' continual betrayal of one another and the mayhem that breaks out in every scene. Bhagam Bhag A murder mystery involving criminals and a missing woman is thrown into the mix in this Priyadarshan thriller set in London, which stars a theatrical ensemble. In this wild farce that combines humour and a whodunit, Akshay Kumar, Govinda, and Paresh Rawal get together. It takes a page out of Awara Paagal Deewana by thriving on ambiguity, unsteady corpses, and trouble-prone individuals. Khatta Meetha Although it's a little more serious, Priyadarshan's Khatta Meetha is nevertheless full of humour and social commentary. The film stars Akshay Kumar as a comically inept small-time contractor fighting entrenched corruption. The tone of the film dances precariously between satire and seriousness, similar to how Awara Paagal Deewana combined crime, comedy, and action. Kanjoos Makhichoos The more contemporary work in this kind, Kanjoos Makhichoos by Vipul Mehta, features Kunal Kemmu in the role of a miserly man who, following a family tragedy, must deal with bureaucratic red tape. Similar to Awara Paagal Deewana (but quieter and less action-packed), it features severe middle-class anarchy, situational comedy, and exaggerated characters. Even though the movie came out 23 years ago, Bollywood's fondness for ensemble storytelling, comedic setups, and chaotic plots is a clear reflection of the Awara Paagal Deewana impact on the comic-action genre. These films show that sometimes the wilder the journey, the more enjoyable it is.
