While the PKR secretary-general admitted that distribution of wealth should be more equitable and efficient, she said the government has to tread carefully in doing so.

Fuziah was responding to a question on the government's strategy to tackle the widening wealth disparity gap between the T20 and the rest of the country at the BBC World Questions debate yesterday. Citing that the richest 10 per cent in Malaysia take home 40 per cent of income, presenter Jonny Dymond asked Fuziah whether the government considered a tax hike on them as part of a wealth redistribution exercise. Meawhile, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal pointed out that the government has not clearly defined the T15 — a new classification to represent the top 15 per cent of Malaysian households that was introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the 2025 Budget. Wan also stressed the need to improve and enhance educational and digital resources in rural constituencies like his to be on par with urban constituencies in Kuala Lumpur. On a related development, Fuziah said her ministry is currently studying the possible impacts of US President Donald Trump's tariffs on Malaysian goods entering the country. Malaysia currently faces a 24 per cent tariff but negotiations are ongoing. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz reportedly said that Malaysia seeks to lower the current rate to the 10 per cent baseline tariff that applies to all US trading partners. Fuziah admitted that loss of jobs was imminent if Malaysia's trade ties with the US — its second-largest trading partner — is fractured by high tariffs. The government, she said, is exploring new markets to mitigate the US tariff impacts, should it come to effect in July 2025. Meanwhile, Tricia Yeoh, an associate professor of practice at the University of Nottingham Malaysia's School of Politics and International Relations, called on Malaysia to uphold its strategic neutrality approach amid the escalating trade war between US and China. Anwar's dilemma grows as allies compete for Cabinet posts
THE resignations of PKR's Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as economy and natural resources ministers have sparked a race among unity government parties for the vacant Cabinet posts. This has deepened the dilemma faced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. UMNO, eyeing its seventh ministerial slot after Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's defection to PKR, has proposed names like Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, sources said. Johari is the current Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister. Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan is also mentioned as a potential interim economy minister. Meanwhile, Amanah also is pushing for more representation, citing its strong track record, while MIC and MCA demand fairer Barisan Nasional (BN) representation, criticising UMNO's dominance. While Anwar faces pressure to balance coalition dynamics, both MIC and MCA have so far been denied ministerial posts, though they are under the BN banner, and BN is a loyal party to the Madani regime. Reports now suggest Johari is among those tipped to act as interim economy minister, replacing Rafizi, who made it clear he is not coming back to Anwar's cabinet. However, Anwar could also appoint Johari, analysts said, as a permanent economy minister in a portfolio swap between UMNO and PKR. A portfolio swap could happen, but the quota balance remains. Some reports are saying UMNO could propose others to replace Johari at the Commodities, such as Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan or Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail. We also have to note that last week, Amanah Johor called on the Prime Minister to allocate more cabinet positions to the party following the resignation of two ministers. Its deputy chairman Dr Zuhan Zain highlighted Amanah's strong performance and commitment to the unity government, citing leaders like the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. While the vacant posts were previously held by Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, Zuhan argued that UMNO's nomination of non-PKR candidates opens opportunities for all coalition parties to propose their leaders. On the other hand, UMNO has been reminded not to behave as if it is the sole party representing BN in the coalition government. MIC strategic director R Thinalan criticised BN chairperson Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's push to maintain UMNO's seven ministerial positions after Tengku Zafrul's departure, calling it disappointing to MIC grassroots. Thinalan argued that UMNO is not the sole BN representative, questioning why MCA or MIC cannot fill Cabinet roles. Batu Ferringhi coastal erosion project nears completion
GEORGE TOWN: The coastal erosion mitigation project at Batu Ferringhi has made significant progress, with sandbag installation works now 95 per cent completed. State Infrastructure, Transport and Utility Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the initiative, which started in April, was funded through an emergency allocation of RM250,000. "The project, covering a 130m stretch from Rasa Sayang Hotel to Golden Sands Hotel, is now in its final stages, with contractors focusing on finishing works," he said in his latest Facebook entry. He also showed several photos of the work done. Zairil said, in addition to the immediate response, a long-term solution was underway under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), with an estimated cost of RM61 million. He said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) is currently in the process of appointing surveyor for hydrographic survey of the coastline, which spans from Batu Ferringhi to Tanjung Bunga. "Physical works for the long-term solution are expected to begin next year or 2027," he added. During a visit here in April, Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the federal government had approved a RM61 million budget for vital restoration works for Batu Ferringhi following erosion issue. He said the project would focus on both immediate protection and long-term preservation, with particular details to maintaining the beach's attractiveness as a tourist destination. The design, to be finalised this year, would incorporate a combination of solutions such as breakwaters, sand nourishment, and other mitigation measures to stabilise the area and protect the 7km beachfront, stretching from Batu Ferringhi to Tanjung Bunga. The Batu Ferringhi beach, one of Penang's most iconic tourist destinations, has experienced considerable degradation over the past few years due to shifting sand and constant wave action.
