Michael Gaine murder suspect makes complaint to Garda Ombudsman over interviews by gardaí

Irish Examiner06-06-2025

A man who has admitted to being a suspect in the investigation into Michael Gaine's murder in Kerry has lodged a complaint to the Garda Ombudsman's office.
Michael Kelley lodged the complaint with Fiosrú, formerly known as the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc), about two weeks ago.
According to a source, his complaint centres around interviews that took place between him and investigating gardaí last month.
In a newspaper interview, the 56-year-old American — who lived on Mr Gaine's farm for three years — openly criticised detectives.
Mr Kelley was arrested on May 18 after human tissue belonging to Mr Gaine was found at his farm near Moll's Gap, Co Kerry.

Although he was questioned at length in Killarney Garda Station, he was released without charge, but has since confirmed he was a suspect.
He denies any involvement in Mr Gaine's death.
A local farm contractor, who has carried out work for the Gaine family for years, had been spreading slurry when the machinery jammed and human tissue was found.
The farm was sealed off and officially declared a murder scene.
The last sighting of Michael Gaine buying phone credit in Centra in Kenmare on March 20.
After an extensive search, Mr Gaine's dismembered body was found in one of his two slurry tanks on May 18.
The complaint to the Ombudsman comes as Mr Gaine's funeral is to be held at Holy Cross Church from 10.30am on Saturday.
Afterwards, his old rally car — restored by friends — will take part in a procession around Kenmare after his funeral.
Members of the Killarney and District Motor Club, who restored a Ford Escort Mk2 Mr Gaine once raced in, have organised the procession.
At the head of it will be the car, with an urn of ashes, going on a lap of the town accompanied by other rally drivers from around the country.
Initially, Mr Gaine's disappearance on March 20 was treated by gardaí as a missing person's case, but was later upgraded to a murder probe.

Searches at Clondalkin home in Annie McCarrick murder probe continuing into this week

Gardai are continuing into a new week of searches for the missing American woman The searches at a home in Clondalkin as part of the probe into the murder of Annie McCarrick in 1993 are continuing into next week, understands. An Garda Síochána began conducting searches at the home on Thursday, June 12th. The home and garden are being searched by technical and forensic teams. The search has now entered its second week as Garda Technical Bureau experts, and members from Irishtown Garda Station search for the missing student or any evidence in the case. A cadaver dog was brought in last Friday to search the home for human remains. The dog, Fern, is the same sniffer dog who located the remains of murder victim Tina Satchwell last year. Gardai have emphasised that the current residents of the home are not in any way connected to Annie McCarrick or her disappearance. The searches came as a businessman man in his 60s was arrested and questioned about the disappearance and murder of the American woman. The chief suspect, who was known to Annie, was released without charge. Annie McCarrick Speaking with the Sunday World last week, Annie's mother Nancy McCarrick said she was 'hopeful' about the search. 'I'm just waiting to hear from the gardaí. 'They said they're going to work all week on the excavation. I am very hopeful — that's exactly how I feel, hopeful.' The 26-year-old from Long Island, New York moved to Ireland in January 1993, and lived at at St. Catherine's Court in Sandymount, with two housemates. On the morning of her disappearance on Friday March 26th, Annie spoke to both of her housemates before they left to travel separately over the weekend. She was due to welcome friends to her apartment for dinner the following day. However, they became concerned for her well-being when they visited the home and she was not there. The following day, a friend visited the apartment and spoke to her two flatmates, as Annie had not been heard from. They discovered groceries purchased by Annie on Friday morning were left unpacked in shopping bags. The receipt stated the time and date of the purchase as March 26th 1993 at 11.02am. Annie McCarrick News in 90 Seconds - June 20th This was the last confirmed activity of Annie McCarrick. She was reported missing to Gardai, with her mother arriving in the country on March 30th for a pre-arranged holiday. She confirmed that her daughter was missing, and a search for the missing woman commenced. Gardai have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. "Any information will be welcomed by the investigation team, and will be treated in the strictest confidence,' a spokesperson said. 'The investigation team can be contacted at Irishtown Garda Station on 01 666 9600 or anyone who wishes to provide information confidentially should contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.'

285 arrested after massive drugs haul seized by Indonesian authorities

Indonesian authorities said they arrested 285 people suspected of drug trafficking, including 29 women and seven foreigners, and seized more than half a ton of various substances during a two-month-long nationwide crackdown. Indonesia is a major hub for drug trafficking in Southeast Asia despite having strict drug laws, with convicted smugglers sometimes executed by firing squad. The head of the National Narcotic Agency, Marthinus Hukom, said the crackdown, launched between April and June across 20 provinces, also uncovered money laundering schemes by two drug syndicates and confiscated assets worth more than 26 billion rupiah (about £1.1 million). Thirty-six of the suspects, including 21 women, were paraded in front of reporters, along with confiscated drugs, in their orange prison uniforms and hands handcuffed. Indonesian police officers stand guard near various drugs (Achmad Ibrahim/AP) Mr Hukom said the women arrested were mostly housewives. 'I call on Indonesian women to be more vigilant in establishing friendships both in the real world and in cyberspace,' he said during a joint press conference with officials from the security affairs ministry and the customs office who took part in the operation. One of the agency's deputies, Budi Wibowo, said authorities seized 683,885 grams (0.68 ton) of crystal meth, marijuana, ecstasy, THC, hashish and amphetamines, adding this helped stop them falling into the hands of 'more than 1.3 million people'. Mr Wibowo also said that drug syndicates have used various methods to distribute narcotics to users via land and sea transportation or mail services. The seven foreign nationals were an American, two Kazakhs, two Malaysians, an Indian and an Australian, Mr Wibowo said. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major drug-smuggling hub in part because international drug syndicates target its young population. In a separate operation, authorities in the province of Riau Island, exposed in May two cases of drug smuggling in its waters and seized 2.7 tons of crystal methamphetamine and 1.2 tons of ketamine, Mr Hukom said on Monday. In 2023, authorities uncovered more than 52,000 of drug cases and confiscated 6.2 tons of crystal meth, 1.1 tons of marijuana and other types of synthetic narcotics, said Mochammad Hasan of the ministry of security affairs during the press conference. Mr Hasan said the number increased in 2024 with more than 56,000 cases and confiscated 7.5 tons of crystal meth and 3.3 tons of marijuana, with a combine value worth 7.5 trillion rupiah (£340 million). Authorities have arrested a total of 27,357 drug suspects by November 2024, he said. Early this month, three British nationals accused of smuggling nearly a kilogram of cocaine into Indonesia were charged in a court on the tourist island of Bali. They face the death penalty under the country's strict drug laws. About 530 people, including 96 foreigners, are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections' data showed. Indonesia's last executions, of an Indonesian and three foreigners, were carried out in July 2016.

Man questioned about Annie McCarrick says 'police are feeding you lies'

A man who was questioned abroad about the Annie McCarrick case has insisted that he and his brother – who was arrested as a suspect – are innocent. Ms McCarrick was 26 years old at the time of her disappearance, and had been living in Ireland after moving to Dublin from the USA in 1993. The American native was last seen on March 26, 1993 with the missing person case being upgraded to a murder investigation on the 30th anniversary of her disappearance. A search of a property which was the chief suspect's family home at the time of Annie's disappearance is still ongoing. The home was purchased by its current owners within the last 15 years, with the owners having moved out of the residence for the duration of the search. Pic: Sam Boal/Collins Photos It comes not long after it was revealed by that Gardaí had decided to make an arrest after going to another jurisdiction to speak with the brother of their suspect. It is understood that information procured during this interview discredited the suspect's alibi for the day Annie went missing. However, speaking to the Irish Mirror, the man insisted that both he and his brother have nothing to do with Annie's death. It comes not long after it was revealed by that Gardaí had moved to arrest the chief suspect in the McCarrick murder after going to another jurisdiction to speak with a close associate of the man. Pic: An Garda Síochána 'My brother and I have nothing to do with Annie's disappearance,' he stated. 'It was I that reported her missing. I was the first person who made the statement in respect of her disappearance in order that the guards might not spend time worrying or spend time investigating me. 'I would have been one of the first to be ruled out of the investigation and I would have imagined that was the same as my brother.' He added that police were 'feeding you lies' as he confirmed a previous conversation with Gardaí wouldn't have given them 'fresh evidence to go after my brother.' exclusively revealed back in March that an arrest was imminent after the investigating team identified a flaw in the previous case work. Gardaí had been focused on apparent sightings of Annie in Enniskerry and near Johnnie Fox's pub. However, the new investigation team have now all but discounted these 'sightings' and believe they may have led Gardaí away from Ms McCarrick's inner circle and the man they have now identified as their chief suspect.
