
New Caterham Seven 310 Encore is an ode to one very special engine
This is the new, special edition Caterham Seven 310 Encore and it's been created to celebrate the life and times of the Ford Sigma engine, which powered the lightweight track toy for more than a decade.
Caterham has actually been using 1.6-litre four-cylinder Ford engines since 1973, with the Ford Sigma motor being added to mid-range versions of the Seven in 2007, as a replacement for the old Rover K-series that had been discontinued. Advertisement - Article continues below
The British marque stopped using the Ford Sigma engine for its road cars a few years ago, and has recently replaced it with a new 1.3-litre engine from Horse Technologies – Renault and Geely's joint venture – for the Caterham Academy Championship race cars.
But Caterham has made sure to give it's long-serving engine a proper sendoff, with the 310 Encore featuring the most powerful form of the 1.6-litre motor. The naturally aspirated four-pot delivers 152bhp at 7,000rpm, which isn't a ludicrous amount, but it can fling a car weighing only 540kg from 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds. Meanwhile the power-to-weight ratio stands at 281bhp per tonne.
Of course, the 310 Encore features a five-speed manual gearbox, but also some modifications borrowed from the Sigma-powered 310R Championship racer. Specifically, a lightened flywheel, 254mm vented front brake discs with quad piston calipers and a race brake master cylinder, plus a 'sports suspension pack' that includes a widened front track, adjustable spring platforms and an adjustable rear anti-roll bar. Track-focused TOYO R888R tyres are wrapped around a set of 13-inch alloy wheels which have received a bespoke gun metal finish, as does the chassis. Other exterior tweaks include an aero nose cone from the power-mad Caterham Seven 620, a 'Cup' mesh grille, carbon fibre front wings, and black finish for the headlights, exhaust heat shield cover and windscreen surround. Inside, the 310 Encore features black leather seats with dark grey stitching and a unique Encore logo, a carbon fibre dashboard with bespoke Encore edition dials, a shift light, a four-point harness and a removable MOMO steering wheel.
The finishing touch is a numbered plaque, because only 25 examples of the Caterham Seven 310 Encore are going to be made, each costing from £39,995. Customers have a choice of six colour schemes for the body paint and stripes, each named after famous pop songs. There's Blue Monday, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Green Light, Orange Crush, Back in Black and White Noise.
Caterham's CEO Bob Laishley said when announcing the 310 Encore: 'For over 50 years the Caterham Seven has been powered to success by various versions of Ford's four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. From the simplicity of the original 1.6-litre Crossflow through to the sophisticated Sigma, these units have offered an unrivalled blend of exhilarating performance and affordable running costs. The Sigma also has incredible motorsport pedigree, having been at the heart of numerous Caterham race series for nearly two decades.'
Adding, 'Perfectly designed for road and track, it distils all the successes of the last half century into a unique vehicle that truly acts as a fitting celebration of the Ford Sigma's indelible mark on Caterham history.'

With Evo still in Steam Early Access development and not yet close to completion, it's not clear whether all the GT3 content and features will migrate over to the new game verbatim. JOHN MURDOCH'S DRIVE TIME: We get behind the wheel of the Ford Mustang and discover the end has arrived for the Honda Civic Type R
Available in both coupe and convertible body styles, the seventh generation Mustang is still selling well. In this instalment of John Murdoch's Drive Time, John gets behind the wheel of the legend that is the Ford Mustang and discovers how the end has arrived for the famous Honda Civic Type R. The latest version of the legendary Ford Mustang muscle car comes with a redesigned digital interior and a revamped V8 engine to supply even more firepower. Available in both coupe and convertible body styles, the seventh generation Mustang is still selling well. Since the original Mustang first arrived six decades ago more than 10 million have been sold worldwide. With edgier styling, the latest model sits on the same platform as its predecessor but comes with upgraded hardware, software and tuning - plus a new Gen IV 5.0-litre V8 engine said to provide even greater response and performance. Not to be confused with its sibling, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E, this model looks like a real muscle car and has the power to match with a mighty 5.0-litre V8 engine growling under the huge bonnet. With prices ranging from £58,470 to £63,970, the 2025 Mustang is sold in Fastback or Convertible form and customers can select from either a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic unit. I have been sampling the GT Fastback with the automatic gearbox and enjoyed its huge performance. Now with an even more aggressive look the GT Fastback has a sculpted bonnet, black grille housing the galloping horse emblem, signature triple-LED headlamps and tail lights, 19-inch carbonised grey alloys with red brake calipers and was finished in Atlas Blue paint as an £800 extra. The cabin is deceptively spacious up front with ample room for a couple of tall adults and it has black leather sports seats which are powered, heated and ventilated. The flat-bottomed steering wheel can also be heated. Twin screens that merge behind a single glass pane dominate with a 12.4-inch digital driver display along with a 13.2-inch infotainment screen that offers access to all the on-board technology. As you would expect, the Mustang features Ford's latest and most intuitive SYNC 4 software with over-the-air updates. You also get an excellent 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, sat nav, a rearview camera, along with climate control settings. The GT Fastback has a wonderful soundtrack to match its stunning performance. The 5.0-litre V8 engine delivers 446PS and 540Nm of torque. That's enough to rocket from 0 to 62mph in just 4.9 seconds and has a top speed that's limited to 155mph. Don't expect economy as the best you will achieve is 28mpg on a long run if you take it easy and an average of 23mpg. If you really push things, consumption will plunge to as little as 13mpg. The 10-speed automatic box is smooth and perfect for the job but you can also operate it manually if you wish. The engine roars into life as soon as you press the start button and the V8 soundtrack is superb through the quad tailpipes. Acceleration is rapid and the GT has loads of grip and is at home on both motorways and country roads. Multiple drive modes enable you to alter the performance and enjoy the soundtrack. You can even tone the noise level down if you don't want to upset the neighbours late at night or early morning. Room up front is great but the rear seats are only suitable for youngsters. The boot is ample and provides 381 litres of space - enough for the shop or a couple of sets of golf clubs. A wireless charging pad is a bonus and there is also lots of storage space in the cabin. The Mustang makes driving fun and this Ford icon may not be subtle but it makes you feel great when you get behind the wheel. It may not be too long before we are not able to drive cars like this, so let's enjoy it while we still can. FAST FACTS: Price: £60,470. In further motoring news, Honda is saying goodbye to its iconic Civic Type R with a new Ultimate Edition that signals the end of sales for the model in Europe - with only 40 units available across the region, alongside the remaining standard models. Designed to embody 28-years of hot hatch performance, this special model comes in trademark Championship White with bespoke red decals across both the bonnet and down the side of the vehicle that match its iconic badge. There is also a painted black roof, plus carbon details throughout, including a wing spoiler and doorstep garnish. Inside, the carbon theme continues with a centre console panel, while additional lighting calls out select interior features, including the door lining, cup holder, centre console, footwell and under seat illumination. On opening the front doors, there is also a Type R logo projector that enhances the unique appeal. As a special token, owners will receive a unique matching gift box containing a numbered emblem - from one to 40 - and a carbon key ring, alongside custom-made floor mats, and a car cover. Hannah Swift, head of European strategy and product at Honda Motor Europe, said: "As we say farewell to a true icon of the Honda automobile line-up in Europe, we thought it was fitting to give the Civic Type R the ultimate send-off with this special edition model offering our customers a unique opportunity to celebrate its legacy. "The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation. "However, Type R has always been Honda's ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead." The Civic Type R first came to prominence in Japan with the sixth generation of the Civic hatchback model in 1997. Since then, it has spanned a further five generations and many special editions besides, building a dedicated fan base around the world with its long tradition of high-performance inspired by the spirit of racing. Further demonstrating its dynamic credentials across almost three decades, the Civic Type R has set front wheel drive production benchmarks at several circuits around the world - most notably the Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany on several occasions. This on-track success also extended to the World Touring Car Championship and World Touring Car Cup, in addition to other regional series, where the Civic Type R has been a popular choice and delivered both drivers' and team titles. Major car brand issues ‘stop driving immediately' recall after 700,000 motors in France – check if you're affected
A MAJOR carmaker has recalled thousands of motors due to a defect that could prove deadly. Owners of popular Citroën models - built between 2009 and 2019 - have been warned to stop driving their cars immediately. 4 4 4 Stellantis has told all owners of 2009-2019 Citroën Mk1 DS 3s and Mk2 Citroën C3s in the UK to stop driving their cars immediately. This includes both the Citroën DS 3 and later examples of the supermini - sold solely under the DS brand. It comes a week after a driver died after the Takata airbag in her 2014 Citroën C3 exploded. The 37-year-old woman in Reims, France, suffered fatal injuries - prompting the recall of the popular car model. France's Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot called for all C3 and DS3 vehicles with Takata airbags to be taken off the road on Tuesday. French carmaker Citroën had already recalled the affected cars - replacing airbags in just under 70 percent of the 690,000 vehicles. But Tabarot said the company's response had been 'unacceptable and scandalous' and had 'not matched the scale of the risk'. Citroën's new director Xavier Chardon later told AFP the brand would be placing all affected cars across Europe under a "stop-drive" order "to speed up repairs". Affected C3 and DS 3 owners will be informed by letter, said Stellantis. The company is urging owners to check their address and contact details with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are up to date - so they can be reached without delay. Ford Recalls 148,000 Vehicles: Fire & Crash Risks Explained Motorists can also use the Citroën UK website to check if their car is affected - using a vehicle identification number (VIN) search. Stellantis UK has urged owners of affected vehicles to register for an airbag repair immediately. This can be done online or by calling either the company's recall helpline or Citroën customer care. Stellantis said it is 'mobilising its full network of suppliers, retailers and manufacturing plants' to ensure the repairs take place as quickly as possible. It added: 'Stellantis remains fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently, and responsibly in addressing this issue.' Faulty Takata airbags were responsible for the largest vehicle recall in history. Taking place in 2017, the recall affected over 100 million vehicles worldwide across multiple car brands - including Honda, Toyota, BMW, Ford, Nissan and Stellantis. The airbags, manufactured by Japanese company Takata Corporation, were found to have defective inflators that could explode with excessive force during deployment. It comes as numerous other car models with Takata airbags - sold between 2001 and 2018 - have been urged not to use their vehicles. These include models such as the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, Mercedes A-Class II, and the Mercedes C-Class II and III. The new announcement came in April as at least 29 airbag-related incident have been recorded in France - including 17 deaths - since 2016. Meanwhile, Ford is recalling over a million cars after discovering a software glitch that could increase the risk of a crash. The recall affects 1,075,299 vehicles across the UK and worldwide. The problem involves rear view cameras freezing or failing to display properly when the vehicle is put into reverse. The American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed the fault, warning: 'A frozen or missing rearview camera image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.' Ford has acknowledged the issue, confirming that there have been no reported injuries linked to the fault so far. 4
