AIADMK stages hunger strike supporting mango farmers in Krishnagiri
The AIADMK cadres staged a sit-in hunger strike in protest in Krishnagiri over the fall in mango prices and accusing the DMK government of 'inaction' on Friday (June 20, 2025).
The protest held near the new bus stand grounds wa led by the party's deputy general secretary and Vepanapalli MLA K.P. Munusamy.
The AIADMK has lent solidarity with the mango farmers who are aggrieved by the fall in prices owing to bumper harvest on one hand, and low prices offered by the pulp industry on the other.
The mango pulp industry has claimed poor demand from major beverage companies citing the global conflict that has taken a hit on the demand. The acceptance of the previous orders by the beverage companies was lukewarm and it has brought down new orders, the industry contends. Consequently, farmers are pushed to sell Totapuri variety of mangoes at as low as ₹3 to ₹5 per kg.
The day long token hunger strike witnessed AIADMK cadres led by Mr. Munusamy along with the former Krishnagiri MP K. Ashok Kumar and former Minister Y. Balakrishna Reddy sitting in protest. They were joined by the AIADMK leader and member of Rajya Sabha M. Thambidurai.
However, the party has also demanded that the government announce a support price for mangoes, along the lines of the Andhra Pradesh government, where a support price of ₹4 was offered, while the pulp industry would procure the mangoes at ₹8 per kg.
The protest however, cost a snake its life. Farmers affiliated with the party dumped mangoes at the protest site as a mark of protest. A non-venomous tree snake emerged from the mound of mangoes rattling the onlookers, who killed it eventually.

A request has also been made for a 100-bed hospital to be set up in the area, which would be taken up with the chief minister, he added. However, the function was briefly disrupted when KV Kuppam MLA and AIADMK ally Poovai Jaganmoorthy rushed to the stage before the minister finished his speech. After Duraimurugan's address, Jaganmoorthy insisted on speaking and asserted that he had promised to establish the college and was actively pushing for a hospital. 'As MLA of this constituency, I will continue to press the state government for additional concessions,' he said.

EPS plans to launch poll campaign from Coimbatore in July
Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is planning to start his campaign from Coimbatore, in July or Aug against the backdrop of DMK and BJP already actively engaging with the electorate, multiple sources told TOI. Meanwhile, BJP is preparing for Union minister Amit Shah's visit, expected on July 8, to address the new team of office bearers for Nainar Nagenthran. BJP may streamline its decision-making process by limiting its core committee to 10 members to improve efficiency as the party gears up for upcoming assembly election. Palaniswami is scheduled to hold a second round of discussions with district secretaries and functionaries on June 24, with a focus on the booth level committees and strengthening the party's grassroots presence. "The changes will be very minimal as election is fast approaching. An announcement will be made shortly," a party leader said. New Delhi: A number of opposition politicians on Friday (June 20) expressed criticism of Union home minister Amit Shah's remarks that soon people would feel shame for speaking in English in India, saying that learning the language is economically useful and alleging that Shah was trying to undermine India's linguistic pluralism. Speaking at a book launch in Delhi, Shah on Thursday said that 'the building of a society where those who speak English in this country will feel shame is not far away now'. A 'foreign language' cannot be used to understand 'our country, its history, its traditions and our religions', said Shah, adding to express hope that despite the difficulty in doing so, Indian society would 'once again' run the country, think, conduct research and make decisions in 'our languages'. However, Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi said English is 'as essential as your mother tongue because it will secure jobs [and] boost confidence', advocating for cherishing Indian languages while teaching English. He also alleged that the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh 'don't want India's poor children to learn English because they don't want you to ask questions, move forward or stand equal'. K.
