Rider dies after branch falls on him in Koramangala
Bengaluru's pre-monsoon rain has kept's canopy management teams on their toes.BBMP's Forest Department says it has received 1,257 complaints of tree and branch management between May 1 and 21. Out of these, little over 400 complaints were for the removal of dry and diseased trees, and around 841 cases were regarding weak and dangling branches. As many as 298 of these complaints were from Bengaluru South zone, 189 each from Bengaluru West and East, and 184 complaints from Bommanahalli zones. More than a 100 complaints poured in from Yelahanka. In the given period, BBMP's control room has received 300 complaints of fallen trees and a little over 1,000 complaints of fallen branches from across the city due to gusty wind and rain.'We have deployed 30 canopy management teams with 8 members in each team. Apart from this, we have 11 rapid response teams to attend to emergencies. We have also hired a couple of earth movers this time to clear the debris faster. The department is well equipped for the upcoming monsoon season,' said BLG Swamy, deputy conservator of forest, BBMP.To avoid tree-fall accidents this year, the Department, a couple of months ago, published a list of officials across all eight zones in the BBMP limit that were to be contacted for the removal of 'dangerous' avenue trees in the city. The idea was to get rid of weak, ailing trees during the summer and avoid mishaps in the monsoon. This large number of complaints, according to the officials, is also due to clarity on contact officers.Between April 2024 and May 2025, the canopy management teams have attended to nearly 20,000 cases.Official data shows that complaints of falling trees/branches in Bengaluru are on the rise.Between April 2020 and March 2021, the team attended to 7,472 cases. It went up to 12,107 between April 2021 and March 2022, followed by 17,948 canopy management cases between April 2023 and March 2024.BBMP has also increased the number of canopy management teams over the last few years. BBMP had 15 canopy management teams (each with eight members) in 2020, which was expanded to 28 teams at a total cost of Rs 11.7 crore in 2023, followed by 30 teams currently.BBMP DCF says, more than rain and gusty wind, it is improper handling of avenue trees by other agencies and BBMP departments that has led to so many green trees crashing.'We received more than 200 complaints from the public about weak and ailing trees and dangling branches in April, which is unusual. These were mostly green trees, but were hollow on the inside. This is mainly because of the mishandling of avenue trees. While agencies such as BWSSB and BBMP take up pipe laying or road improvement work, they carry out such work carelessly, leading to root damage. We have sent notices to BWSSB and BBMP engineers in such cases,' added Swamy.BBMP will also soon begin freeing up the critical root zones of avenue trees in the city that have concrete up to their trunk.

Retaining wall of Sengulam Tank in Coimbatore is ready, says CCMC chief
COIMBATORE: With the southwest monsoon already setting in, residents of Kuniyamuthur and nearby localities have urged the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) to expedite the remaining construction works along the Sengulam Tank. The 265-acre tank, near Kuniyamuthur, has frequently caused flooding in adjacent neighbourhoods during monsoon seasons. It poses a threat to nearby residential areas if protective measures are not completed on time. Recognising the risk, the CCMC initiated a Rs 15-crore project under the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure and Development Fund (TNUIDF) to construct a 1.85-kilometre-long retaining wall along the tank's western bund. The project also includes the laying of a tar road from Netaji Nagar in Kulathupalayam to the Kuniyamuthur-Sundakkamuthur Road, along with the installation of 120 streetlights. These developments are expected to significantly benefit over 3,500 residents, including those living in the 720 tenements built by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board in Ward 91. "In the past, we have suffered so much during the rains. Water from the tank would gush into our streets. We hope this time, the new wall and road will protect our homes," said M Rajalakshmi, a resident of Kulathupalayam.

Moderate showers expose KMC claims of drain cleaning
Kanpur: Just one moderate shower has exposed the tall claims of Kanpur Municipal Corporation regarding nullah cleaning in the city. In March, as in previous years, it was decided to clean all 236 major nullahs of the city before June, and an amount of Rs 8 crore was released for this purpose. The deadline was extended three times, but effective nullah cleaning remained incomplete. June 20 was set as the third deadline, but the moderate showers on Friday 19 exposed deficiencies in the cleaning process. With the monsoon now active, even two moderate showers have caused waterlogging at several sites in the city, particularly in Kanpur South. At the notorious Sisamau nullah, silt was seen lying on the bank, not yet lifted, while desilting work continued. After showers on Thursday and Friday, silt accumulated on the bank once again entered the nullah. Most drains that were de-silted have become flooded with silt once again as the recent showers washed it back into them. The municipal corporation officials claimed that around 180 nullahs had been de-silted and cleaned, with work on the remaining pending nullahs to be completed by June 20. A media team visited about a dozen nullahs to verify these claims and observed that in one-third of the locations silt was lying on the banks, another third were overflowing with silt, and others were only semi-cleaned with silt accumulated on the sides.

4 of family killed as house collapses in Uttarkashi village after heavy rain
Dehradun: Four members of a family died early Friday after a portion of their house collapsed in Uttarkashi district's Odata village following heavy rain overnight. The incident occurred around 2am, burying Ghulam Hussain, 26, his wife Rukma Khatun, 23, their three-year-old son Abid, and 10-month-old daughter Salma under debris while they were sleeping, said officials. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Hussain's parents, who were in another room, also got injured. A search and rescue operation was launched by a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team led by sub inspector Deepak Kuniyal. The village, located nearly a kilometre uphill from the main road and accessible only on foot, posed challenges to the rescue effort. All four bodies were eventually recovered. Preliminary investigation suggests the collapse may have been triggered by either the rain or structural weakness. "The heavy rain in the region likely compromised the integrity of the house," said officer Jabbar Singh Aswal. The district disaster management office said an ex-gratia amount of Rs 16 lakh – Rs 4 lakh for each of the deceased – has been given to the victims' family. Since the monsoon began on June 1, at least 11 people have died and seven others have been injured in rain-related incidents across the state, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
