Fontenot delivers in Cowgirl win

The Cowgirls are making walk-off wins a habit.
Top-seeded McNeese was pushed to the brink for the second time in the Lake Charles bracket, winning only with one final swing.
Nyjah Fontenot's sharp single up the middle scored pinch-runner Rylee Eyster from second with two out in the bottom of the seventh Saturday to give McNeese a 4-3 victory over Incarnate Word.
The win was the Cowgirls' third straight walk-off win in postseason play at Joe Miller Ballpark, dating back to the championship game of 2022.
Fontenot's winner came after the Cardinal (28-20) had rallied from three runs down to tie the game at 3-3.
'That was a really good softball game,' said McNeese head coach James Landreneau. 'We bounced back from them tying it and regained the momentum. It's a big win.'
The victory sends the top-seeded Cowgirls (39-18) into the title game on Sunday at 1 p.m. They will face the Saturday night's matchup winner between No. 4 UIW and No. 5 Lamar. McNeese will have to win once on Sunday to host the best-of-3 championship series against No. 2 seed Southeastern starting Thursday.
An Arkansas transfer, Fontenot ensured McNeese stayed in the winner's bracket.
'I had an idea of what I wanted to do,' said Fontenot. 'I didn't want to overdo it, so I just put a good swing on it.'
The rally started with a one-out pinch-hit single from Gwinn Hall. Eyster ran for Hall, and one out later was on second, after Kassidy Chance singled to leave, setting up Fontenot.
'Nyjah was able to come up with that big hit for us,' said Landreneau. 'We just keep working and trying to make something happen.'
Senior Reese Reyna had another big tournament game. The shortstop went 3-for-3 and scored two runs. She has four straight hits in this tournament.
'Just playing one pitch at a time,' said Reyna. 'We trust everybody in our lineup. You just have to do it when you get your shot.'
Rylie Bouvier drove in a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and double as McNeese took a 3-0 lead after four innings. But a two-run homer by Prisias Quintero, her first of the season, cut the McNeese lead to 3-2 in the sixth.
In the seventh, the Cardinals tied the game with a run without a hit, scoring on a groundout to second to tie the game.
McNeese freshman Maddie Taylor started, was replaced for two-thirds of an inning by Ryann Schexnayder, and returned to get the win and improve to 17-7. The Pitcher of the Year finished her 6⅓ innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits, striking out five and walking three.
The victory was McNeese's 44th straight over the last three years at home against Southland opponents and 16th in their last 17 games overall.
'I thought Maddie pitched a really good game,' said Landreneau. 'When I took her out, we told her to stay in the game, we might bring her back. That's not always easy, but she did it.'
The game was originally scheduled for Friday night; however, the heavy rains washed things back to Saturday and into Sunday.

SAN FRANCISCO Gianna Galarza (St. Ignatius): The junior catcher earned first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League honors by hitting .515 (35-for-68) with 24 RBIs, seven doubles and four home runs, all team bests. In 84 plate appearances, Galarza struck out just twice and drew 15 walks as she posted a .607 on-base percentage with a 1.401 OPS. The third-year starter also threw out nine runners trying to steal and had just two errors in 183 total chances. A model of consistency, Galarza had hits in 22 of 23 games, starting the season on a 16-game hitting streak. Ava Bulanti (St. Francis): The senior pitcher and slugger was Co-WCAL Pitcher of the Year for the Chronicle's No. 1 team, going 14-1 with a 1.96 ERA. A Stanford commit, Bulanti struck out 112 in 93 innings with 29 walks. She also blasted a team-best eight home runs and hit .398 with eight doubles to help the Lancers win WCAL and Central Coast Section Open Division titles. The Livermore Stampede Tournament MVP had 64 hits, 60 RBIs and 27 extra-base hits during her three-year varsity career. EAST BAY Andrea Tall (Newark Memorial): The San Diego State-bound infielder had a monster senior season, hitting .607 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs for the Cougars (18-5). Tall's home run total bettered the previous North Coast Section single-season record of 15 but was surpassed this season by Metro overall Player of the Year Delaney Aumua's 19. Tall finished with 51 hits in 84 at-bats with 13 additional extra base hits (seven doubles, six triples). In a 9-0 win over Redwood-Larkspur in a North Coast Section Division 2 playoff game, she went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and home run. Her biggest power surge was blasting two home runs, driving in eight and going 4-for-4 in a 30-4 win over Irvington. She had at least three hits eight times. Callie Howard (Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa): The UC San Diego signee earned North Bay League Oak Division Player of the Year/Pitcher of the Year honors by going 21-6 with a 1.37 ERA and leading the Cardinals to their fourth straight NCS championship. Howard struck out a career-high 260 batters in 163 innings. In the NorCal Division 2 playoffs, she pitched complete-game wins over Calaveras (5-1) and Pinole Valley (1-0) — allowing just seven hits and striking out 19 against zero walks — before losing a 1-0 to Hillsdale-San Mateo in the title game. She also hit .367 with 33 hits on the season.

Jim Gazzolo column: McNeese keeps travel bag handy

(American Press Archives) The bosses at McNeese have made it clear: if asked, the school is ready to jump at the next opportunity toward the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Having missed one if not two chances, time might be running out. Facing the hard truth, McNeese, a Football Championship Subdivision school, wasn't ready to move up over the last five years despite what it had talked about. The facilities were a mess, the football program was in disarray and, although funding was improving, it was far from ready to compete at that level. Many of those issues have been corrected or addressed. The hurricanes of 2020 forced the fixing and modernization of all sports facilities. Most of the work has been completed, but there are still projects on the board that need to be finished. The fact that things have been fixed and improved, though, does show that any league looking at it would see that the commitment from the administration is there. There has also been significant growth in funding, and McNeese is a leader at its level in the work of the name, image, and likeness department. Credit Athletic Director Heath Schroyer and his crew for thinking ahead of the curve the past few years. That, however, doesn't mean leagues will be fighting over the Cowboys. The truth is that it's a buyer's market with numerous teams looking for invitations. And while it has greatly improved its financial situation over the last half decade, McNeese's sports budget is still well behind that of places like Tarleton State, for example. That is still an uphill climb. As for the McNeese programs, it is clear that men's basketball has demonstrated its ability to compete at higher levels. Baseball and softball have also experienced similar trends over the years. Women's basketball and football need work, with a lot of eyes on the gridiron this fall. One thing McNeese has over many schools looking to move is its football tradition. Recently, that has not been the case; however, this year the Cowboys went back in time to change the direction of their future, rehiring Matt Viator as head football coach. Still, there is a lot of politicking and positioning behind the scenes that will be done if any movement is to follow for McNeese or the rest. Schroyer is, of course, good at this. While he said this week he doesn't expect an invitation to be extended, he will make a few calls just to let people know the Cowboys are interested if there is a good fit. That is why a lot is riding on this football season. NFL All Quarter Century Team: Players from the NFC West
As we are in the dead of the offseason and there is almost nothing happening in the NFL until late July, now we get lists and rankings. ESPN put together an All Quarter Century Team for the NFL, constructing a 53-man roster with the best players of the last 25 years. The roster is sprinkled with a few of Arizona Cardinals players, some who played for Arizona at the end of their careers and others who were longtime Cardinals, as well as players who spent time with all of the teams in the NFC West. Who made the list? NFL All Quarter Century Team: Players from the NFC West Arizona Cardinals OL Alan Faneca DL Calais Campbell DL J.J. Watt CB Patrick Peterson Faneca barely counts as a Cardinal as he is famous for his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he played his final NFL season in Arizona as a starter. Campbell is an awesome addition because at no point in his career has he been considered a top-five defensive lineman. But his consistent production over nearly two decades earns him a spot. Peterson was dominant for his first eight seasons in Arizona. Watt was one of the best defenders we have seen. He spent the last two seasons of his career in Arizona and had 12.5 sacks in his last season in 2022. LA Rams DL Aaron Donald LB Bobby Wagner Donald is an obvious choice. Wagner also has been one of the best linebackers this generation, but he only played one season with the Rams. San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey FB Kyle Juszczyk WR Terrell Owens WR Randy Moss OT Trent Williams CB Richard Sherman OC Kyle Shanahan The 49ers have a ton of players on this list, although Moss only spent a season with them. Sherman's best came with Seattle. Seattle Seahawks OL Steve Hutchinson LB Bobby Wagner CB Richard Sherman All three players were generational.
