Lions OC John Morton says he's not changing much: "It's working, right?"
The Lions brought John Morton back to the franchise to replace the departed Ben Johnson as offensive coordinator for 2025.
Morton had spent a year with Detroit under head coach Dan Campbell as the club's senior offensive assistant in 2022, so he's familiar with the scheme and personnel.
Having ranked in the top five in points and yards in each of the last three seasons, Morton isn't trying to disturb the groove in his first season as OC.
'I mean, I'm not changing much,' Morton said in a Tuesday press conference, via Shawn Windsor of the Detroit Free Press. 'Why? It's working, right? So that would be the smartest thing to do.'
Detroit finished No. 1 in scoring for only the second time in franchise history and the first time since 1954 last year. So, it makes sense that Morton isn't trying to change the general scheme.
But because he's not Johnson, there are things he'll inherently do differently.
'It's just about techniques and certain things, [like] how I talk, how I see it, how I'm teaching them the concepts. Why we're calling [a certain play],' Morton said. 'That might be something they've never heard before because I'm teaching everybody [the same way] you teach the quarterback. I think that's important. Like, why are we running this play? They should know.'
But other than that, Morton wants to fit in with what has already been established.
'It's just me learning, that's the biggest thing,' Morton said. 'I mean, as a staff, as an offensive staff, we're doing this together. The only way to win a Super Bowl is if everybody's on the same page.'

'I've never had anything like this happen in my eight years in baseball.' Santana can be seen in videos posted on social media pointing out the fan to a police officer before jumping and swinging at the person who's in the front row above Pittsburgh's bullpen at Comerica Park. The veteran pass rusher has to be hopeful that this one doesn't spoil as quickly as his last. The Philadelphia Eagles added Huff last year as one of their most notable acquisitions. At the time, Hurff was coming off of a four-year run on the New York Jets. During the 2023 NFL season, Huff appeared in 17 games. He combined 29 tackles, and generated a career-high 10 sacks. In the three seasons before Huff's big campaign, he totaled 7.5 sacks. The Eagles were hopeful the 27-year-old would be a major presence for their defensive front for several seasons. They made a big investment in the young veteran, by putting $51 million on the table for the next three seasons. In the end, Huff would last just one year in Philadelphia. Brandon Graham suggested that difference between the schemes in New York and Philadelphia played a major part in Huff's struggles. "It was just that defense, man," Graham said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. "I know what it's like playing in that 4-3, wide-nine, go get it. "I've seen different guys flourish in different systems, and then you see him get in another system, it's different, and what they asked of this year, it just wasn't a great marriage, I would say," Graham added. The Eagles' defense thrived under the veteran defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio. They especially showed out in the Super Bowl, where they bothered Patrick Mahomes to the point where the Chiefs couldn't get anything going on offense until the Eagles eased up late in the game. Unfortunately for Huff, he wasn't really a part of that on the field. In 2024, Huff appeared in 12 games for the Eagles. He finished the year with 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The veteran forced one fumble. As the Eagles went on their impressive Super Bowl run, Huff appeared in just two games. He didn't register a single statstic in the postseason. This year, Huff will look to bounce back on the San Francisco 49ers after getting traded. Recency bias doesn't trust his ability to have an impact out West, but Brandon Graham assures NFL fans that Huff can still be very productive in the right system. "I know Huff can rush. I see him doing all that, but sometimes it's just different with the type of scheme and what people ask of you and they want you to be able to do," Graham finished. While the Detroit Lions have been reluctant to spend on additions this offseason, big money for their stars has been the expectation in 2025. Advertisement Kerby Joseph became the latest of their players to sign a hefty extension as his new deal made him the NFL's most expensive safety. Aidan Hutchinson has been expected to get a new deal of his own this offseason, but that has surprisingly not gotten done yet. Mitchell / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images During a recent appearance on the Detroit Lions Podcast, Lions reporter Jeff Risdon said that he is "very very extraordinarily confident" that a contract extension for Jameson Williams will get done soon. Williams is coming off of a great season. He made 58 catches for 1001 yards and seven touchdowns. Advertisement However, that followed a rough first couple of seasons in the NFL for Williams. He made just one catch for 41 yards in six games as a rookie. He followed that up with 24 catches for 354 yards in year two. After exercising the fifth-year option on Williams' rookie deal, he's still under contract for two more seasons. The gives the Lions time to see more out of Williams before giving him an extension rather than paying him based on one strong season. The team also has other players they need to extend who should be higher priorities. The first is Hutchinson, who is going to be expensive whenever he works out his extension with the Lions. Advertisement Then there are Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta, whose rookie deals will run out at the same time as Williams', but they've proven more in their first two seasons. Jahmyr Gibbs will also be due for an extension in an couple of years. All of these guys would be better investments than the team's WR2 who has one year of production under his belt. The other issue here is the move the Lions already made at wide receiver this offseason. If they were planning to extend Williams just a couple of months later, why did they give up so much for Isaac TeSlaa? Did they really give up three third rounders for a guy who is going to be capped at taking their WR3 role? Is it that important of a spot? Advertisement It just feels wasteful if that was what they actually had planned for TeSlaa. I still think the best move for the Lions is to get another year out of Williams, hope he plays well, then trade him next year. It's just going to be too difficult for the Lions to pay him while also holding on to all of the stars that currently make up the core of their roster. That's especially true when they just invested in a young addition to their wide receiver room. If they are set on giving Williams a long-term extension, they should be waiting to see what he accomplishes in 2025. They're probably not going to get a big discount on him because of his limited production if they get a deal done now. Advertisement The Lions are going to have to make sacrifices at some point with so many stars they want to keep under contract. Williams makes the most sense to be sacrificed and they shouldn't be rushing to get a deal done with him this offseason.
