Mandya achieves 102% target under MGNREGA
Mandya district in Karnataka has set a new benchmark under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by achieving 102.55% of its annual target for 2024–25, providing significant livelihood opportunities to rural communities.
The Mandya zilla panchayat (ZP), which oversees implementation of the programme, has earned praise for its effective execution. A total of 3,44,904 families were issued job cards, of which 1,46,039 cards remained active, benefiting 2,58,697 individuals under the scheme.
Against the targeted 27 lakh man-days for the district, Mandya successfully generated 27,69,096 man-days of employment. Among the taluks, K.R. Pet stood out by achieving 144.55% of its target, creating 7,64,005 man-days against the expected 5,28,538. Maddur taluk followed, achieving 106.63% by generating 6,89,083 man-days against a target of 6,49,083. The remaining five taluks recorded achievements between 70% and 90% of their respective targets.
The zilla panchayat noted that MGNREGA has played a crucial role in reducing rural migration by providing employment opportunities within villages themselves.
For 2025–26, action plans prepared by the gram panchayats have been approved, ensuring that the upcoming works are both necessary and beneficial to the community. Officials have been directed to focus on effective and timely implementation of the projects.
Importantly, the daily wage under MGNREGA has been revised from ₹349 to ₹370 per person, effective April 1, 2025. With the revision, a family completing 100 days of work can now earn ₹37,000 annually, compared to ₹34,900 the previous year.
The Union Ministry of Rural Development announced the revised rates through a recent order.
Mandya ZP CEO K.R. Nandini lauded the achievement, describing MGNREGA as a 'ray of hope' for the rural population. She urged villagers to fully utilise the benefits of the programme, especially with the increased wage rate now in effect.

Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), women's participation in total workdays generated has reached an encouraging 46.71 per cent. A total of 1.60 crore jobs (manav diwas) have so far been created under the MNREGA scheme across the state in the financial year 2025-26, out of which women contributed to the creation of more than 72 lakh jobs. The contribution of about 45 per cent is the highest so far. Interestingly, women are also proving helpful for MNREGA management and supervision. The govt provides an honorarium of Rs 325 per day to these women mates. In this way, it turned out to be a source of additional income for them along with their household work. Namrata Devi, a resident of Arjun Patti Gram Panchayat of Handia development block of the district, says that her husband Akhilesh works in a rubber factory, but the basic needs of the house were not met. After being appointed to the job of a mahila mate in MNREGA, she is able to get extra money every month and manages the house smoothly. Sushila Devi, a resident of Jagua Sodha Gram Panchayat of Handia development Khand, claims, "Despite her work as a welder, the education of two children and household expenses were not met with this amount." She said that with the income she gets from MNREGA mate, she is able to cover the education expenses of her children.

Banks must protect govt incentive funds from loan deductions: Melukote MLA
Mandya: Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah urged that bank managers write to their central offices requesting the installation of software that prevents govt incentive funds from being deducted for loan repayments. Once a loan is taken from a bank, the EMI amount is automatically deducted from the account on the scheduled date each month, he said. Speaking at a meeting with various bank managers at the DC's office here, he said when the govt provides incentive funds to farmers or citizens, and they are automatically adjusted towards loan EMIs, people have to visit the bank and request a reversal to their subsidy accounts. However, only about 3% of the population have the capacity to approach banks and raise such issues, which is why a software solution is essential. He emphasized that banks function because of customers. Many poor farmers in rural areas are bank customers, and bank staff must treat them with respect. Deputy commissioner Kumara said various govt-provided benefits—like social pensions, milk incentives, Anna Bhagya, Gruha Lakshmi funds, MGNREGA wages, and crop loss compensation—should not be deducted for loan repayments, out of humanitarian concern. He urged the bank staff to communicate in Kannada, especially since Mandya is a district of farmers. Though many bank officials and managers know Kannada, they often speak in English or Hindi. This attitude must change, he said. He also pointed out the scheme that offers a 3% interest rebate to farmers who repay their crop loans within the stipulated time, and asked the banks to make farmers aware of this benefit.

1.6L water projects helping state ‘catch the rain'
Lucknow: The 'Catch The Rain 2025' campaign to promote water conservation in the state saw over 1.66 lakh projects launched between Mar 22 and Jun 13, including rainwater harvesting projects, rejuvenation of traditional water sources and massive afforestation efforts. A govt spokesperson said 17,557 projects related to rainwater harvesting were completed, while 16,561 were in progress. Under MGNREGA, 5,714 traditional water body revival works were completed and 5,093 were ongoing. In the same period, 3,825 soak pit and stabilisation pond projects were completed, with another 512 underway. Watershed development saw 66,135 completed works and 52,097 in progress. In addition to this, 20,922 intensive afforestation works were executed, with 23,089 more currently underway. "The Krishi Vigyan Kendras successfully conducted 228 awareness and training programmes, educating farmers, students, rural women and youth on water management techniques. These activities were implemented by the departments of agriculture and horticulture," the official said.
