The business marketplace to feature consumer-oriented programming, including pink carpet event
The Busan Content Market, one of Korea's largest marketplaces for content licensing and distribution, is set to take place from May 28-30 at Bexco, Busan.
Under the theme 'Global Content Hub Busan,' this year's event is expected to attract over 700 companies representing more than 50 countries.
Key highlights of the market include BCM Funding, a business-matching platform aimed at fostering partnerships between content creators and investors.
BCM Conference, which will feature in-depth discussions on emerging trends and the future of K-dramas, webtoons, artificial intelligence-driven content and more, will also take place. Among the speakers for the conference are the writer and director of Netflix's original series "The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call" and the writer behind the popular webtoon "Dr. Frost." Jaedam Media's CEO will also join a panel to provide insights into the evolving content landscape.
The event also features BCM Academy, an educational initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of talent in broadcasting and video content. The program will offer students specialized lectures and insights regarding the content market dynamics from industry professionals.
Expanding beyond its traditional industry focus, this year's Busan Content Market will further introduce consumer-oriented programming.
A pink-carpet event will welcome a star-studded lineup of domestic and international talent. Notable attendees include actor Lee Soo-hyuk and director Ahn Joo-young of the drama "S-Line," an award winner of the 2025 Cannes International Series Festival, usually called the Canneseries. Also appearing will be "Nepobaby" producer Ida Handlykken Kvernstrom and Malin-Sarah Gozin, director of Apple TV+'s global hit "Bad Sisters."
The market will also host a screening session, titled 'Canneseries X Busan," featuring nine series recognized by Canneseries. The premiere showcase will offer global investors and content stakeholders an exclusive first look ahead of the content's official commercial distribution.

It's a peculiar cultural ritual where horror films offer an icy jolt to counter the sweltering heat — a shiver down the spine in place of a cool breeze. But this year's slate of Korean horror marks a departure from the genre's usual paranormal suspects. Gone are the vengeful spirits and timeworn curses that once haunted screens. Instead, filmmakers are leaning into the anxieties of modern city life, spinning terror from the everyday frustrations that haunt urban dwellers. These films suggest that in a country as densely populated and tightly packed as South Korea, the real horrors might not be otherworldly — they might just be the people around you. Leading the charge is "Noise," opening June 25. Already a buzzed-about title on last year's international festival circuit, including Sitges and Fantasia, the film zeroes in on one of Korea's most maddening urban grievances: the relentless, brain-rattling thuds from upstairs neighbors. Director Kim Soo-jin transforms this all-too-familiar nuisance into a mounting sense of claustrophobic dread, turning domestic discomfort into a full-blown horror show. In a country where more than two-thirds of the population lives in apartment complexes, inter-floor noise complaints are no laughing matter — they've sparked violent altercations, stabbings and arson attacks, some fatal. The film roots its horror in this simmering tension, following the perspective of a hearing-impaired woman (played by Lee Sun-bin) who's searching for her missing sister. Her investigation leads her into a labyrinthine high-rise where every creak, shuffle and muffled knock feels like a threat, and even silence becomes suspicious. Backing the film's psychological horror is a razor-sharp soundscape designed by the veteran audio engineer behind "The Wailing" (2016) and "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum" (2018). From the stickiness of tape being peeled to the hair-raising scratch of nails on wallpaper, each sound is fine-tuned to shred nerves. Netflix joins the fray on July 18 with "Wall to Wall," another thriller that draws on noise-fueled paranoia. It's one of seven original Korean films the streaming juggernaut is rolling out this year — and the lone horror entry — part of its broader push into the Korean film industry at a time when local theaters are reeling from record-low attendance. Kang Ha-neul, a leading man known for his range across romance and thrillers, plays an everyman who bets everything — savings, pension, even family property — to secure a modest apartment in Seoul. But his dream home quickly devolves into a psychological minefield as neighbors turn hostile and cryptic sounds pierce the thin walls. Apart from the scares, the film promises a timely commentary on South Korea's ruthless housing market and the emotional toll of securing — and keeping — a piece of it. (Fittingly, the Korean title "84 Square Meters" refers to the standard size of a middle-class unit here.) Rounding out the lineup is "Ghost Train," which premiered at last year's Busan International Film Festival. The anthology turns Korea's ubiquitous subway system — the daily artery for millions of commuters — into a haunted maze of uncanny encounters. Despite the title, the horror here is grounded in the all-too-familiar: drunken passengers, flickering platform lights and vending machines that seem just a little too creepy. Joo Hyun-young, best known for her comedic skits on "SNL Korea," makes her feature film debut as a clout-chasing YouTuber hunting for viral horror content at a notoriously cursed station. The film opens in local theaters on July 9.

Screenwriter Hwang Jin-young, best known for writing hit MBC drama "My Dearest," has been ordered to repay 350 million won ($254,000) for failing to fulfill her contractual obligations with a local drama producer, according to a local media report Sunday. The Seoul Western District Court recently ruled in favor of the production company in a lawsuit filed against Hwang, which sought the return of advance payments for a planned 20-episode series, The Herald Business reported. The court ruled that Hwang failed to deliver the agreed number of scripts and ordered her to return the full amount to the firm. In August 2017, the production company and Hwang signed a contract for a drama script. Under the agreement, Hwang was to write and deliver the script for a 20-episode series. Her fee was set at 35 million won per episode, totaling 700 million won. The company paid Hwang half of that amount — 350 million won — as an advance. The contract stated that the period should be five years from the date of signing, and it should end once the 20 episodes are completed. However, at the time, Hwang was already under an exclusive writing contract for the MBC drama 'My Dearest,' which prohibited her from working on other projects between July 2014 and December 2019. Hwang submitted the initial draft to the production company only a year after the contract was signed. When the firm expressed negative feedback, Hwang allegedly made no effort to revise the script. The legal dispute began nearly six years later. In August 2023, the firm urged Hwang to fulfill her obligations under the scriptwriting contract. However, Hwang argued that the contract period had already ended, and therefore the agreement was no longer valid. She also claimed she had no obligation to return the contract payment and had no intention of completing the script. The company filed a lawsuit around February 2024, stating, 'Hwang not only failed to fulfill her writing obligations but also unjustifiably refused to do so.' In its initial ruling, the court stated, 'It is highly questionable whether Hwang ever had the intention to faithfully fulfill the scriptwriting contract in this case.' Hwang has appealed the decision, and the case will be heard in the Seoul High Court before a ruling is finalized.
