F-35B fighter jet: A US-made F-3B stealth fighter jet of the British Royal Navy– one of the world's most expensive warplanes– made an emergency landing at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala on Saturday, and remains grounded there for more than 72 hours. According to reports, the fighter jet, which is part of the UK's HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group, was forced to make an emergency landing at the airport due to low fuel.
British F-35B fighter jet grounded at Kerala airport
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is handling the matter, but a formal update on the F-35B fighter is awaited, according to Indian Defence PRO and Thiruvananthapuram airport officials. 'The IAF is fully aware and facilitated the aircraft for flight safety reasons. All assistance is being given, and the IAF is in coordination with all agencies,' said an IAF spokesperson.

As per officials, the fighter jet as launched from HMS Prince of Wales (R09)– the British Royal Navy's flagship aircraft carrier– about 100 nautical miles from the Indian coast in the Indo-Pacific region, where the HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group is currently operating, after conducting a series of joint exercises with the Indian Navy.
Why F-35B was forced to land at Thiruvananthapuram Airport?
After launch, the British fighter aircraft was unable to land due to inclement weather conditions in the region, and subsequently, the pilot contacted Air Traffic Control on an international distress frequency, seeking an emergency landing. The ATC diverted the aircraft to the Thiruvananthapuram Airport at 9:30 pm on Saturday, where it remains grounded, officials said.

Day after its emergency landing, the pilots of the British warplane were flown back to the HMS Prince of Wales aboard a AW101 Merlin helicopter, indicating that the fighter jet may take a while to be ready for operational use. The IAF has termed the incident a 'normal occurrence of diversion by F-35.'
The F-35B currently remains parked in the General Aviation terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram Airport under the watch of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, and requires IAF clearance before flying back, as per officials.
How much does the F-35B cost?
Developed by US arms maker Lockheed Martin, the F-35B is a custom variant of the F-35 operated by the British Royal Navy, and reportedly cost up to $109 million per unit. The 5th-generation stealth fighter features an advanced stealth made of radar-absorbing materials, internal weapons bays, and precisely aligned surfaces, making it extremely difficult for air defense systems and radars to detect.
The F-35B, which measures 51.2 feet in length and 14.3 feet in height, with a 35-foot wingspan, is capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 1.6, even when carrying a full internal payload of 6800 kg. It can weigh up to 60,000 pounds at takeoff.

Untreated sewage discharged into canal irrigating 12,762 acres: Farmers in TN'S Thoothukudi
THOOTHUKUDI: Farmers raised strong concerns over pollution of the Melakal canal and demanded reforms in water distribution from the Thamirabarani river during the agriculture grievance redressal meeting held in the district on Thursday. The meeting, chaired by District Revenue Officer (DRO) A Ravichandran, was attended by officials from the agriculture, revenue, and other departments. P Arumuganainar, a farmer from V Kovilpathu near Seithunganallur, complained that civic bodies in Vittilapuram, V Kovilpathu, Seithunganallur, and other villages under Karungulam union were discharging untreated wastewater directly into the Melakal canal. This canal, branching off from the Maruthur anaicut on the Thamirabarani river, irrigates over 12,762 acres through 17 system tanks. He alleged that Karungulam union authorities had constructed drain canals that led straight into the Melakal canal, contaminating the water and resulting in weed growth, livestock diseases, and health hazards for the local population. When questioned by DRO Ravichandran, Karungulam union officials admitted that the drain canals were indeed connected up to the junction of the streets and canal. They informed the administration that plans are underway to construct soak pits to prevent wastewater from mixing with irrigation water. Meanwhile, Maharaj Paldurai, a farmer from Sathankulam, demanded that the district administration ensure surplus water from the Thamirabarani river be diverted to the Sadayaneri flood carrier canal. He criticised the current system, claiming that surplus water is being directed to system tanks, sidelining arid areas such as Udangudi and Sathankulam. Citing a G.O from 1985, Paldurai pointed out that six tanks, including Vellamadamkulam, Udayarkulam, Muthalaikulam, and Velarikaiyoorani, were granted access to the Sadayaneri canal. He argued that this allocation was unjust and called for the scrapping of the GO, stressing that system tanks should be filled progressively through their respective channels as per traditional British-era practices. The Sadayaneri canal, constructed in 1973, carries floodwater from Kalvai tank to the Sadayaneri tank in Udangudi union. It was further extended to Puthantharuvai in 1991.

'Right Engine Changed, Left Inspected': Air India On Dreamliner Plane Crash
New Delhi: The right engine of the Air India plane that crashed 36 seconds after take-off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Airport - killing 274 people - was overhauled in March 2025 and the left was inspected in April, Campbell Wilson, the airline's Managing Director, said Thursday. The London Gatwick-bound plane was 'well-maintained, with its last major inspection in June 2023 and another scheduled for December 2025', Wilson said in an open letter to customers. The aircraft and engines showed no issues before the flight, and the pilots - Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder - had 13,400 hours of flying experience, he said. Reassurances from the airline's boss follow questions about the safety of the Air India's 128-strong fleet, of which 33 (32 after the June 12 crash) are Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The prevailing theory is a double engine failure or a total electronic or hydraulic malfunction, which is supported by aural and visual evidence of the RAT, or Ram Air Turbine, deploying before the crash. Deployment of the RAT suggests double engine failure, experts told NDTV. Experts speaking to British broadcaster BBC, however, said the condition of a plane's engine is not necessarily linked to its age, particularly in the case of the Genx-1B engines on the 787-8. These engines, ex- aviation investigator Kishore Chinta said, do not have a maintenance schedule because of a software called Full Authority Digital Engine Control thats monitors and flags issues. However, there are still parts that must be replaced regularly due to wear-and-tear, he said. Wilson told customers "thorough safety inspections" had been ordered on Air India's Dreamliner fleet and that checks had been completed for 26, which are now cleared to fly. As a precaution though, "enhanced pre-flight safety checks" on all Boeing 787 planes will continue for the time being, leading to a 15 per cent reduction in its use of widebody planes. This is expected to continue till mid-July. Wilson said the time to perform these checks, and factors such as airspace closure over parts of West Asia, "led to a higher-than-usual number of cancellations on our long-haul network". According to aviation regulator DGCA, Air India has cancelled 66 Dreamliner flights since the crash, with the highest number (22) the day after the disaster. Air India Ahmedabad-London Plane Crash The plane was carrying a full load of fuel and 272 people, including the pilots and 10 crew members. All but one - a British-Indian man with the most incredible luck - were killed. At least 33 people on the ground also died after the plane, which struggled to gain altitude after take-off, crashed into a residential area less than 2km from the airport. A widely-shared video of the crash, shot on a mobile phone by a teen boy from the roof of his home, showed the plane, its jet engines, shrieking shrilly but in vain, falling into the Meghani Nagar area. The tail section of the AI 171 seen sticking out of the hostel for college students. A hostel for medical students took the brunt of the impact; horrific visuals from the crash site showed the plane's tail sticking out of the building. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was one of the passengers. The 'Black Boxes' The flight data and voice recorders, together called the 'black box', have been found and the information within could potentially explain the reason for the crash. However, the device suffered some damage in the crash and will require an extraction process to access the data. READ | Air India 'Black Box' Damaged, Centre To Decide On Sending It Abroad It is unclear if this extraction will be done in India or abroad. In the event the 'black boxes' are sent to the US, Indian officials will accompany it to ensure protocols are followed. What Happened To Flight AI-171 The plane took off June 12 at 1.39 pm, the Civil Aviation Ministry spokesperson said last week, and within seconds, radioed Ahmedabad ATC about a lack of thrust and then went radio silent. "Mayday! Mayday! Thrust not achieved..." were Captain Sabharwal's final words. Ahmedabad ATC immediately tried to contact the flight but there was no response. Seconds later the plane crashed into buildings in the Meghani Nagar neighbourhood, including the college hostel.
