Four people given suspended sentences for Vinícius Júnior hate crime

The Guardian5 days ago

Four people have been handed suspended jail sentences by a Madrid court after being found guilty of a hate crime related to an effigy of the Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior.
They were involved in hanging a banner reading 'Madrid hates Real' and an inflatable black effigy in a replica of the Brazilian's No 20 shirt on a bridge before a Copa del Rey match between Real Madrid and Atlético in January 2023.
One defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime and an additional seven months for making threats, having distributed images of the act online. The other three were sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats.
They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinícius Júnior, Real Madrid, La Liga and the Spanish football federation.
'The defendant who posted the video online received a special disqualification from working in education, sports, or recreational youth settings for four years and three months, while the others received three years and seven months,' a La Liga statement said.
The first defendant was fined €1,084 (£924) and the other three €720, with additional punishments including a 1,000-metre restraining order from Vinícius Júnior, his home and workplace, and a ban on approaching football stadiums during La Liga or Spanish federation matches.
They will be required to participate in an educational programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination in order for the prison sentences imposed to be suspended. There was no immediate confirmation from the court or Vinícius Júnior.

Lamine Yamal insists he did NOT try to meet adult film star, 29, after she threatened to leak voice messages from the Barca teenager - just days after he was spotted with a different model 12 years older than him

Lamine Yamal has denied he tried to meet up with an adult film star as debate emerged on who ensured a meeting between the 17-year-old and 29-year-old didn't take place. Barcelona star Yamal has burst onto the scene in recent months due to his staggering success at both club and international level, representing Barca and Spain respectively. In the off-season, the teenager has taken the time to enjoy some downtime - he is currently in Rio de Janeiro with 'idol' Neymar, having previously jetted off on holiday with another woman 12 years his senior. Now, though, just days after images of Yamal and OnlyFans model Fati Vazquez emerged, he has been drawn into a debate over a meeting with Claudia Bavel that never came to fruition. Yamal indirectly featured on Spanish TV show TardeAR, which saw producers air an off-air conversation with Yamal that saw him claim he didn't meet Bavel because he 'wasn't interested' in a discussion between the two. Alex Alvarez, meanwhile - a reporter on the show - alleged that there had been claims that Bavel's plan was to hire a photographer and sell images of a meet up, which Yamal said would have been impossible because he lives with his mother, who does not allow unfamiliar visitors. Bavel, though, has now spoken up herself, taking to social media to give her side of the story. The model, who was also present on TardeAR on Friday night, shared to her 259,000 followers: 'I chose not to speak publicly on this matter in 2025. However, since Lamine Yamal mentioned our alleged relationship on TardeAR, I find it appropriate to share my version with clarity and respect. 'He claims to live with his mother, but in reality lives alone. He says he rejected me, when he was the one who sought my contact and insisted on meeting. He denies we've met, despite crossing paths at several social events. 'I respectfully ask that offensive and defamatory messages stop. I have NEVER had any relationship with a minor, never arranged a meeting, and there was never any plan involving fame or money. 'The only thing we agree on is that no meeting or situation ever happened between us. Behind the headlines and public opinion, there are people. Out of respect, I ask for understanding and restraint.' Speaking on the show later that day, she added that they didn't meet because she didn't want to meet a minor. She also claimed to have voice notes of Yamal saying they could spend time together despite the age gap. She said she cut off contact with the star a long time ago, but alleged that she recently received a message from Yamal threatening her to not speak about their conversations. 'Ask her if you like,' Yamal had said. 'She'll probably pull out the excuse that "he's a minor", but we never met because I told her I wasn't interested.' Bavel - who was previously involved in a row with Real Madrid and Spain legend Iker Casillas - was appearing on the show on Friday night, after the original news was reported on Thursday. Vazquez (left) and Yamal (right) were both seen relaxing by the same pool on holiday in Italy The new controversy comes after photos were published of Yamal on holiday with Spanish flight attendant and social media influencer Fati Vazquez, who is 29 years old. Spanish magazine Lecturas published images of the pair on a jet ski together on the island of Pantelleria in the south of Sicily. It followed Yamal and Vazquez posting photos from the same location in recent days, with the pair enjoying a life of luxury that has included going on a boat trip, relaxing by a pool and flying in a helicopter. Lecturas wrote that the pair 'don't want to put a name to their obvious friendship', but said they 'get along perfectly'. 'Their closeness is such that they didn't hesitate to go on vacation at a key moment,; they added. 'They wanted to get away from it all and celebrate the season's many successes.' The report claimed there is a 'clear connection between them' and 'the age difference is not an obstacle to their understanding'. Yamal, however, has denied that they are a couple after speaking with gossip expert Javi de Hoyos. De Hoyos claims 'he's been able to speak to Yamal, and he categorically denies that he's with Vazquez; he says they have nothing going on. 'Lamine didn't go to this vacation spot alone, but with other Barca team-mates,' De Hoyos added. Vazquez has also spoken out about the backlash she has received, while stating she is 29 years old, after initially being reported as 30. The influencer said that she has received death threats following the photos of her with Yamal, while stating they are 'two people who want to have a good time'. 'I'm getting really p****d off, people are even wishing me dead because of it,' Vazquez told Spanish television show La familia de la tele. 'I'm receiving death threats and messages calling me a paedophile. 'First, I'm 29, I haven't made it to the thirties yet. I haven't done anything, haven't killed anyone. The reactions are just too heavy and it's even affecting him [Lamine]. 'I don't want to say anything more or make a big deal out of it or make it morbid, because I think it's completely unnecessary. 'We're just two people who want to have a good time, and that's it.' Vazquez shared another post on Instagram, responding to critics, of her in a swimming pool in Italy, with the caption: 'Imagine talking bad about me and I'm over here like this.'

'It didn't work out' - Vente leaves Hibs for 'significant fee'

Dylan Vente's time at Hibernian did not work out as planned, says head coach David Gray, as the striker seals a permanent move away to Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen for a "significant fee".The 26-year-old's arrival at Easter Road for a "notable fee" two years ago was described by the Leith club as part of a "significant investment in the playing squad".But the forward went on to play just 43 games, scoring 11 goals, during his time at spent the majority of last season on loan PEC Zwolle in the Dutch top flight and netted an impressive tally of 13 from 30 Eredivisie his departure, Hibs boss Gray said: "Dylan performed well in the Eredivisie with PEC Zwolle last season and felt more comfortable back in his homeland, playing football with a smile on his face. "His time at Hibs didn't quite work out the way we'd all planned, but I'd like to thank him for all his hard work and hope he goes on to achieve his ambitions and full potential."Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay added: "There was a lot of interest in Dylan this summer after his performances last season, and he had a clear desire to continue playing and enjoying his football in the Eredivisie."We had to make sure we got the right deal for Hibernian, and after a number of conversations, we're happy with the deal we've got for him."

Cops in Cyprus suspended after being filmed having sex in patrol car

Two police officers who were filmed having sex in a patrol car in the middle of the day have been suspended from duty. A resident of Larnaca, in Cyprus, was driving through an open field when he spotted the male and female cops having intercourse. The clip went viral, with hundreds viewing the scandalous images. 'If I or you did it and a patrol car was passing by, we would be arrested', one offended user pointed out on social platform X. Another said that the cops 'must suffer the consequences of their actions.' The police officers involved were quickly identified and have been suspended. One is understood to have been on-duty at the time, while the other was not, local media reported. Police are now carrying out a criminal and disciplinary investigation. Criminal charges could include neglect of duty as well as public indecency, according to Cyprus Mail. 'Such actions and behaviors are unacceptable as they insult the work of thousands of our members', a police spokesperson said. But a statement from the Cyprus Police Association has called for members of the public to respect the privacy of the officers involved. 'From the very beginning, the leadership of the force gave instructions for an immediate investigation of the incident, so that any responsibilities that arise can be attributed,' the statement said. 'The public's trust is precious to us and there is no room for excuses on issues of ethics and professionalism. 'At the same time, however, we are watching with concern the way in which the public debate has been diverted into a tidal wave of discredit for the entire police force.' Irini Loizidou Nicolaidou, the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, said 'the priority is to protect the privacy of their families, especially if there are minor children involved.' The viral video comes months after it was revealed more than 25 police officers in the UK were fired or disciplined in the past year after being caught having sex on duty. According to The Sun, information requests to UK forces found at least 26 officers faced disciplinary hearings in the last 24 months for having sex on duty, 20 of whom lost their jobs. But a number of forces refused to give details, meaning the true total is likely to be higher. In one case, a Sussex officer turned off his bodycam to have sex with a woman in her house after she had made a 999 call. In Northumbria, another member of the force was dismissed for having sex with his lover in a police van parked outside a supermarket. One Cleveland Police officer was also banned from policing after filming herself performing a solo sex act in a toilet. The figures led one former Chief Superintendent to blast these disgraced officers as 'damaging the reputation of the police service.'
