Ghatkopar bridge end-2025 deadline postponed to June 2027

Hindustan Times08-05-2025

MUMBAI: In the hope of easing the traffic logjam in the eastern suburbs, yet another British-era bridge—the busy Ghatkopar rail over bridge (ROB)—is set to bite the dust and get replaced by a new, wider overpass. But with its initial deadline of end-2025 being forwarded to a distant June 2027, commuters are riding their hopes on the east-west crossing bridge being built at the adjacent stations of Vidyavihar and Vikhroli. The 78-year-old Ghatkopar ROB came under the BMC's scrutiny after the Gokhale Bridge mishap, prompting structural audits of bridges all over Mumbai by IIT-Bombay in 2018. On finding it overloaded and in need of major repairs, the work on its reconstruction was given to the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) funded by the BMC.
'The bridge starts from the Golibar Road junction near LBS Marg on the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road till the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), connecting Ghatkopar East to Ghatkopar West,' said an official from MRIDC. 'The portion over the railway tracks will be a cable-stayed bridge while the portion over LBS Road will be a bowstring steel span. This is so that long spans of the bridge can be constructed without pillars adding to the traffic congestion on the road below. The bridge will also crisscross with two metro lines and the bullet train.'
With work orders given in 2022, the work is inching ahead at a snail's pace. The old bridge, with its 2+2 lanes, has been allowed to continue to function after maintenance although heavy vehicles have been restricted on it.
This, however, has been causing issues. 'BEST buses have to take a long turn right from Amar Mahal, as they can't ply on the old bridge, and heavy vehicles that are headed to Sakinaka also face this issue,' said Ajay Bagal, a resident who has long been campaigning for a new Ghatkopar ROB.
The old bridge will be demolished as the right-hand lanes of the new bridge near completion in around a year, allowing for some traffic movement to continue. 'Traffic will be diverted onto the right-hand lanes, and then we will take up work on the left side,' said the MRIDC official.
While work on the railway portion is on, it is the approach roads where the issue lies, as there are encroachments crowding the alignments. MRIDC acknowledged this, saying it was the BMC's responsibility to remove the encroachments.
'There are shops and a recently constructed SRA building in the way of the west-side approach road, which is delaying the work,' said Bagal. 'By now, the work on the bridge should have been almost complete, but it isn't. The other bridges coming up at Vikhroli and Vidyavihar will surely reduce the load on this one, but this bridge offers a straight road up to Sakinaka and the international airport, and is in one of the most congested areas, so it is of utmost importance.'

Hirebenakal eyes Unesco heritage tag through site upgrade

Koppal: Development initiatives are being planned at Hirebenakal, a 3,000-year-old megalithic site in Gangavathi taluk, with the goal of securing Unesco World Heritage status. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Situated 40km from the district headquarters, it requires a 10km uphill trek to reach the archaeological site. The site, under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Hampi Circle's protection, sits atop a castellated granite hillock, accessible from 3km southeast of the village. British officer Philip Meadows Taylor first discovered these monuments in 1835 while serving at the court of Nizam of Hyderabad. He presented the site internationally through a research publication in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society. Locals describe the site, spanning over 20 hectares, as 'Morera houses'. The site's information board indicates these stone structures were built as memorials for the deceased. Some suggest Stone Age dwarfs inhabited these house-like formations. A large pond exists near the structures, indicating Neolithic Age inhabitants, primarily farmers, occupied this area. These rock tombs and cave art are currently on Unesco's World Heritage tentative list. The site houses the second-largest collection of monuments after Madhya Pradesh's cave paintings. Termed 'Rock monuments of early man', numerous well-preserved tombs exist here. Experts estimate approximately 500 tombs at this megalithic site. The site displays rock paintings depicting dancing, hunting, and weapon-wielding figures. Additional artwork includes geometric patterns and mystical designs of deer, peacocks, humped bulls, bullocks, horses, and cows. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "If properly excavated, more important things can come to light at this site," says Dr Sharanabasappa Kolkar, a historian from Gangavathi. A hemispherical kettledrum stone, strategically positioned on a hillock, measures 2.2m in diameter with 1.5m radial height. It sits on a 10m high monolithic boulder with a beating surface. When struck with stone or wooden implements, it produces musical sounds audible beyond 1km. Dr Sharanabasappa Kolkar mentions that during Rajnish Goyal's visit, the Kalaburgi regional commissioner, in 2010, they proposed including the site in the Unesco World Heritage list. The archaeological department forwarded the application, but Unesco rejected it. "Due to persistent efforts, two years ago, Unesco added the Hirebenkal megalithic site to its provisional list, and we must accelerate efforts to secure its place on the permanent list," he emphasised. Tourism minister HK Patil, during his recent visit, announced plans to develop the site to international standards. He assured that govt would undertake all necessary steps to achieve World Heritage List recognition. Additionally, Patil announced that to educate Bengaluru residents about the site's importance, they would organise a photographic exhibition of the rock tombs at the Venkatappa Art Gallery by Aug 15. Plans are under way to conduct further research within a 5km radius of the hill.

UK's F-35B stealth fighter jet stranded in Kerala for a week

A team of technical experts from the UK is expected to arrive in Thiruvananthapuram in the next couple of days to examine a stranded F-35B 'Lightning' stealth fighter jet of the Royal Navy, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday. The jet, worth over USD 110 million and known to be one of the most advanced fighters, made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram airport on June 14. The aircraft, part of the HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group of the Royal Navy, reportedly had a problem in its hydraulic system. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo The people cited above said a team of experts from the Royal Navy is arriving in Thiruvananthapuram to inspect the aircraft. Few days ago, a maintenance team from the Carrier Strike Group inspected the aircraft but could not address the glitch, they said. Live Events The Indian Air Force last week said it was providing all necessary support for the "rectification and subsequent return" of the aircraft. The aircraft was undertaking routine flying outside Indian Air Defence Identification Zone with Thiruvananthapuram earmarked as the emergency recovery airfield, it said in a brief statement. The HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group carried out military drills with the Indian Navy last week. It is learnt that the aircraft could not return to the carrier on the night of June 14 due to bad weather and made the emergency landing at the Thiruvananthapuram airport. The F-35B is the only fifth generation fighter jet with short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, making it ideal for operating from smaller decks, austere bases and ships. Known simply as the 'Lightning' in British service, the F-35 model is the short take off/vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the fighter jet that is designed to operate from short-field bases and air-capable ships.
