Maharashtra aims to plant 100 mn trees for greener future: Fadnavis

The Maharashtra government has set a target of planting 10 crore trees this year to create a greener and sustainable future for the state, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said.
Tree plantation should become a people's movement, the CM said after chairing a review meeting for the 'Green Maharashtra, Prosperous Maharashtra' tree plantation campaign on the eve of the World Environment Day on Wednesday.
"We've set a target of planting 10 crore trees this year, and will aim for the same next year too, because this is not just about numbers, it's about creating a greener, sustainable future for our state," Fadnavis said in a statement after the meeting.
He said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, Maharashtra has consistently led the way by "planting 33 crore and 50 crore trees" in recent years.
"We are confident that we'll surpass this year's target as well," the chief minister said.
Tree plantation must become a people's movement, he said.
"I've urged all departments, local bodies, and social organisations to join hands. The saplings must be 1.5 to 3 years old, and we must ensure their survival and long-term care," Fadnavis said.
"We're leveraging AI, remote sensing and satellite monitoring for real-time tracking and transparency. Directed for optimal use of CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) funds to ensure the impact on ground," he said.
The forest department will take the lead on plantations along highways and pilgrimage routes, the CM said.
"In view of the upcoming industrial growth, we plan to plant one crore trees in Gadchiroli and intensify efforts in Beed, Latur and Jyotiba hills where the tree cover needs urgent attention," he said.

Two days prior to the announcement, Fadnavis had received formal representations from villagers, farmers, and BJP MLA Mahesh Landge during the inauguration of various development works in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Landge urged Fadnavis and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Shekhar Singh to cancel the proposed reservation. 'The reservation for a slaughterhouse in such a holy area had triggered outrage among all sections of society,' said Landge. Fadnavis said, 'I have already given orders to drop the proposed slaughter house in this area from the plan.' The chief minister also reiterated the government's commitment to ban on cow slaughter.

Fadnavis was speaking during the inauguration of the Chief Minister's Cup U-15 National Wrestling Championship, which began at the indoor stadium of Divisional Sports Complex in Mankapur on Saturday. Decision on loan waiver at appropriate time: CM

Pune: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said a decision on farmers' loan waiver would be taken at the appropriate time. He said guidelines and set procedures must be followed while taking such a decision. The Mahayuti govt would not backtrack from any of the assurances it had given, Fadnavis told reporters here after attending the International Yoga Day event at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Opposition parties have been pressing for an immediate announcement of farm loan waiver to give relief to farmers in the state. Fadnavis said the govt would definitely take a call on the loan waiver at the right time. The chief minister said the govt was keeping a watch on the ongoing rainfall in the state and on water storages in all major dams. "Planning has been done on the release of water and suspension of discharge from dams. The govt is working in coordination with the neighbouring states on this. Our engineers have been deployed in these states. They are coordinating on water release and related developments," he said. Fadnavis praised SPPU for its inclusion among 600 top universities in the world.
