PRAGUE – Australian teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout said on June 22 he preferred the 200 metres to the 100 metres, which is 'too short', as he braced for his first-ever start in Europe.
The 17-year-old won the Australian Athletic Championships in April, clocking 19.84 seconds on 200m and 9.99 seconds on 100m, though both with a tailwind above the limit.
He is getting ready to run 200m at the Golden Spike meet in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava on June 24 in his European premiere.
'I definitely like 200 more than 100 because 100 is a bit too short for me,' Gout told reporters.
'You get the start and then you're already at the finish line.'
'I really like getting out and getting to my top speed and keep holding it to the finish line. So 200 is great and I love it,' said Gout, who was born in Australia after his parents migrated from South Sudan.
He rose to prominence last December when he clocked the quickest 200m time ever by a 16-year-old of 20.04 sec, bettering Usain Bolt's personal best at the same age.
The lanky Gout relished being likened to Bolt, who he called 'the epitome of sprinting'.
He said: 'If I could be on that level and just put my little bit of style onto it. So try to be like him but also bring my little personality with me.'
'Just to know that I may be on the same trajectory and just being compared to the best sprinter of all time is... definitely something I appreciate,' he added.
After the Australian championships, Gout focused on training rather than competing.
'We did a lot of work... on my starts and just to get stronger overall for the Europe season,' he said.
'I'm just building up my strength and just really trying to get in the gym and get to the next level, for sure,' Gout added.
'I'm excited to run again after a long time.'
After Ostrava, Gout will compete at the Diamond League meet in Monaco on July 11 with eyes on the world championships in Tokyo in September.
'Obviously, the world championships is the main goal and I just want to see what I can do on the world stage against professional athletes,' Gout said.
'I just want to get out there and kind of prove myself.' AFP

Sampdoria stay up as Serie B awards 3-0 win after fan trouble at Salernitana

PHOTO: AFP Sampdoria stay up as Serie B awards 3-0 win after fan trouble at Salernitana Sampdoria have pulled off a great escape as Serie B officials awarded them a 3-0 win over Salernitana on June 23, after the second leg of the relegation play-off was abandoned, securing another season in Italy's second tier. The match between hosts Salernitana and Sampdoria was abandoned on June 22 after home fans threw smoke bombs and seats onto the pitch, with a Serie B sports judge ruling that Sampdoria would be awarded the win. Sampdoria have now a 5-0 aggregate victory after their 2-0 first-leg win, confirming their escape from what had seemed like certain relegation to the third tier only a month ago. The Genoa club were initially relegated to Serie C for the first time in their 78-year history in May, only to be handed a lifeline after Brescia were docked points for financial irregularities, dropping them below Sampdoria. For Salernitana, the season ended on a very sour note, with the Salerno club also ordered to play two matches behind closed doors, marking their second consecutive relegation in as many seasons. Osaka earns first grass win of the season with victory over qualifier Danilovic

Osaka earns first grass win of the season with victory over qualifier Danilovic BAD HOMBURG, Germany - Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka fired 16 aces past Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic to earn a 7-6(6) 7-6(4) victory at the Bad Homburg Open on Monday for her first win on grass this season less than a week before the start of Wimbledon. The 27-year-old Japanese player, who had lost in the first round at her last two tournaments -- the French Open and the Berlin Open -- had won her first title in May in almost two years following a maternity break. Osaka, who had reached the third round of the Australian Open in January before retiring injured, has not had back-to-back wins on any surface since the Italian Open in May. She is currently ranked 56th in the world. "It's my first grasscourt win of the year," Osaka said. "I am excited about that. I am super excited to play here and be back for my next round." Asked whether she was on track to improve her form on the surface, she said: "I hope so. I think I have potential but everyone is really good so I cannot take it for granted." The pair held serve to take the first set into a tiebreak where Osaka snatched it on her second set point. Osaka was 40-0 up on her opponent's serve at 2-2 in the second set but she could not bag the first break of either player in the match, with Danilovic holding serve with her eighth ace of the match. Osaka, however, got the mini-break she needed in the tiebreak when she challenged a Danilovic first serve that was then ruled out, with the qualifier then double-faulting. She held on to that slim advantage to earn a spot in the round of 16 where she will face fifth-seed Emma Navarro. Russian eighth-seed Ekaterina Alexandrova also eased into the next round with a 6-1 6-2 win over Swiss Belinda Bencic. Croatia's Donna Vekic made equally light work of sixth seed southpaw Diana Shnaider for a 6-3 6-3 victory. Clara Tauson of Denmark needed to work harder and battle from a set down before snatching a 6-7(6) 6-3 6-3 against Poland's Magdalena Frech. The Lionesses, who begin the defence of their European Championship title next week in Switzerland, were given the surprise at St George's Park where they trained. The 26 different shirts represented every level from grassroots clubs such as Alnwick Town FC (Lucy Bronze), St Martins AC (Maya Le Tissier) and Brandon Groves AFC (Michelle Agyemang) to professional academies at teams such as Villarreal CF (Hannah Hampton) and Queens Park Rangers (Chloe Kelly). Some 150 coaches and current players from the 26 clubs represented were invited to Monday's event. No two players came from the same club. "I often say to the squad 'Go back to that young girl who first started playing football, think about the happiness those days provided you,'" England coach Sarina Wiegman said. "All of the players have had a different journey but their love for the sport will have started at their first club. "For them to wear the shirt of their first-ever club and to have many people who were key to their development at training is really special." England will take the shirts to their base camp in Switzerland. They play Jamaica in a send-off match on Sunday at Leicester's King Power Stadium and then kick off at the Euros on July 5 against France in Group D.
