Trapped miners located, safe and have food – Sibanye-Stillwater
Sibanye-Stillwater says the hundreds of trapped mineworkers at its Kloof 7 sub-shaft – near Randfontein and Westonaria – have been located and will be brought up to the surface.
Randfontein Herald reports that, in a statement issued by the executive vice president for investor relations and corporate affairs at Sibanye-Stillwater, James Wellsted, the miners were trapped as a result of an incident that occurred at the shaft yesterday.
'All 260 employees have been accounted for, are safe and have been provided with food,' the statement by Wellsted read.
'We are actively implementing our safety and shaft examination procedures. Once these are completed, we will begin hoisting employees to the surface. Following a detailed risk assessment, it was decided that employees should remain at the sub-shaft station until it is safe to proceed to the surface, to avoid walking long distances at this time.'
Wellsted said that initial investigations show that the Kloof 7 sub-shaft rock winder skip door opened at the loading point on level 39, impacting levels 40 and 41 below this point.
'The open door of the skip caused some damage at level 35, and the work to make this safe has been completed.'

Calendar: How long are the winter school holidays?
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that the final day of the second term – which also signals the start of the June-July school holidays – will be Friday, 27 June. That's THIS week! Pupils will return to their desks on Tuesday, 22 July for Term 3. That means a June-July holiday period of 24 days in total, comprising three full weeks plus one extra day – and weekends. Those South Africans still working during that period will no doubt be grateful for fewer cars on the road and potentially quicker commutes to work. The 2025 school year is divided into four terms: Term 1: 15 January to 28 March 15 January to 28 March Term 2: 8 April to 27 June 8 April to 27 June Term 3: 22 July to 3 October 22 July to 3 October Term 4: 13 October to 10 December Prior to 2024, there was a difference in the term dates for inland and coastal schools. In 2024 that changed to a calendar that was identical for all provinces. This remains the case in 2025. The 2025 academic year will consist of 200 school days. Terms 1 and 2 will have 52 days, Term 3 will be the longest at 53 days, while Term 4 will be the shortest with just 43 days.
