NIT Trichy Vs IIIT Hyderabad: Which institute is better for CSE?

Indian Express2 days ago

While for JEE Advanced 2025 qualified students, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will be a go-to way, but for those who cracked the JEE Main and could not meet the JEE Advanced cutoff, NITs and IIITs will remain their options. India is home to 31 NITs, 25 IIITs, and 28 government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs). To guide students on which NIT or IIIT is better for different engineering courses, we have started a series to compare them on different parameters. In this article, we will compare NIT Trichy and IIIT Hyderabad for the Computer Science Engineering course.
Located in Tamil Nadu, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli was founded as a Regional Engineering College Tiruchirappalli in 1964 by the state government under the affiliation of the University of Madras. In 2003, the college was granted deemed university status and was renamed as the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, with approval from UGC, AICTE, and the Government of India. As of 2019, the NIT has 115 seats in the CSE course.
The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is a deemed university in Hyderabad, India, established as a non-profit public-private partnership (N-PPP) model, and is the first IIIT in India to follow this model. As mentioned on the official website, there are 30 programmes with 2374 students and 105 faculty members and 25 research centres. The campus has various clubs for students, like the hacking club, the Astronautics club, the open source developers group, among others.
Every year, the Ministry of Education release the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). It ranks higher education institutions in India and is based on different parameters. It also helps students to make an informed decision about what to expect from an institution they are applying to.
Under the NIRF Rankings 2024, NIT Trichy secured a rank of 30 under the overall categories of institutions in India. Additionally, it ranks in the 9th spot under the engineering category of the rankings after the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. In the top ten of the engineering category, NIT Trichy is the sole NIT in 2024 and has left IIT BHU behind, which stands at the 10th spot.
Not only this, but NIT Trichy ranks at the 8th spot under the architecture and planning category of NIRF 2024. The institute ranks at 51th spot under the management category of the rankings.
In the NIRF 2024, the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, ranked in the bandwidth of 101-150. Under the engineering category, it ranked 47 with a score of 54.29. Last year, the Institute ranked 55th in the engineering category.
As the official website of the NIT Trichy, every year, 220 companies participate in the placement. In the academic session 2023-24, 96.9 per cent of undergraduate students in computer science participated in the placement; on the other hand, in the MTech CSE course, 93.3 per cent of students participated.
In the placement, some of the companies that participate are Intel, Morgan Stanley, HCL, Google, Facebook, Honeywell, Microsoft, HSBC, McAfee, Reliance, Pepsico, Tata, Samsung, among others.
As mentioned on the official website, in IIIT Hyderabad's placement, various top companies participate, like Bloomberg, Adobe, Facebook, Google, Opex, Indeed, Uber, Teradata, Walmart and Unacademy, among others. With two engineering programmes, CSE and ECE, IIIT in the academic session 2023-24, saw the highest salary package of Rs 65 LPA in CSE, and Rs 55 LPA for ECE.
In the previous academic year, 99 per cent of students in CSE and 98 per cent of students in ECE were placed with an average pay of Rs 31.49 LPA in CSE and Rs 21.30 LPA in ECE. The lowest salary in the last academic year for CSE was 10 LPA, and 10.97 LPA in ECE.
In NIT Trichy, there are various courses like architecture, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer applications, computer science and engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, energy and environment, humanities and social sciences which provides just one course on MA in English language and literature, management, mathematics, mechanical engineering, production engineering, and metallurgical and materials engineering. In the year 2012, they established a Centre of Excellence in Corrosion and Surface Engineering and provide short-term courses for the students.
The Undergraduate Entrance Examination (UGEE) is held for all dual-degree programmes, while the Special Channel of Admission (SPEC) is meant for single-degree programmes. Students interested in dual-degree courses through lateral entry can apply via the Lateral Entry Entrance Examination (LEEE). Additionally, Olympiad winners have a dedicated admission channel. The Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA) option is available for both single and dual-degree programmes. The JEE (Main) route is applicable for single-degree programme admissions.
Under the core dual degree programme, there are four courses in BTech and a Master of Science by research in electronics & communication engineering or computer science engineering. Other programmes include BTech in Computer Science, MS in Computational Natural Sciences, and MS in Computing and Human Sciences by Research.

A quiet revolution Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, New Delhi

Investing in infrastructure, overhauling the curriculum, cultivating a research culture and leveraging its existing strengths—this DU college set out on a deliberate and determined journey towards change ATMA RAM SANATAN DHARMA COLLEGE , New Delhi No. 8 (2025) up from No. 14 (2020) Despite its prime location in Dhaula Kuan, rich legacy and a large student body, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) College was rarely the first choice for top-scoring students coming to Delhi University (DU). That changed with National Institutional Ranking Framework or NIRF 2024 where ARSD emerged in 5th place. 'This isn't just improvement, it's a leap,' says ARSD principal Prof. Gyantosh Kumar Jha, sitting in his office surrounded by student souvenirs. 'Overtaking SRCC, Lady Shri Ram, even St Stephen's—DU's hallmark colleges—is a reversal no one saw coming, though the pieces had been carefully laid out for years. Not just academics, focus on all-round development of students, that's the soul of what we tried to do here.' It shows. It has been a quiet journey of evolution, pouring crores into infrastructure, overhauling the curriculum, cultivating a dynamic research culture and placing faith in its students to deliver the results. Today, ARSD proudly boasts the highest NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) score among DU colleges: an A++ with a CGPA of 3.77. In 2023, it was declared the best DU college under the NIRF's special category, 'Research and Professional Practice', awarded an outstanding 94.84 out of 100. The college has published more than 1,000 research papers, secured many patents and numerous government research projects. What distinguishes ARSD, though, is its pioneering move to get undergraduates, and not just postgraduates, to collaborate with the faculty on year-round research. 'Our students' research papers are regularly published in international journals,' says Prof. Jha. 'We encourage students to question, explore, build ideas, be it in the arts, sciences, or social sciences.' Fortunately, ARSD's quest for academic excellence has not come at the cost of its culturally vibrant atmosphere. Its 40-day theatre workshop every year has become a signature initiative, attended every year by alumni as well as theatre enthusiasts at home and abroad. 'It's a big deal here,' the principal says. 'Our students got selected for the National School of Drama. This workshop is a way for them to gear up for it.' A MODERN CAMPUS Walking around the campus today, you encounter a space redesigned for contemporary times. Classrooms are now digitally equipped, labs have been spruced up and sustainability is a visible commitment, reflected in the bamboo structures, the manicured lawns, rainwater harvesting systems and vermicomposting units. Administrative processes are digitised, CCTV cameras ensure safety and the newly renovated canteen serves delicious meals with a side dish of nostalgia. Most crucially, a new kind of student is now filing past ARSD's gates—those with marks in the 90s and seeking a mix of a rigorous academic environment and creative freedom. Placement offers have surged, tie-ups with prestigious institutions like the National Productivity Council and the Netaji Subhas University of Technology have deepened and the faculty is encouraged to invest in personal growth—collectively logging in 1,100 hours of professional development in the past five years. This transformation hasn't happened overnight, nor is it a result of any single sweeping reform. It's the product of a steady, determined pursuit of excellence. 'We were never tied to rankings,' says Jha. 'We were chasing quality. The rankings followed.'

Encourage students to choose core engineering courses: IIT-M Director

Students who wish to join engineering must be encouraged to choose core engineering programmes, said V. Kamakoti, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. At an event organised by the Pan IIT Alumni Leadership Series here on Friday, Mr. Kamakoti said 99.9% of toppers in JEE (Advanced) had chosen computer science and engineering. 'We must see a significant number of students go into core engineering. If a topper chooses civil or mechanical engineering it should be because they like it. We must reach out to students in the core engineering departments and try to educate them on professions,' he said. Since autonomous colleges had the freedom to design their curriculum they could fine tune their syllabus to align their curriculum and research with the 17 sustainable development goals. Institutions must also consider introducing interdisciplinary programmes, he said. Students can go for dual degrees, take the GATE. Humanities could tweak their syllabi to encourage students to take up civil services as the country needed to have administrators who are tech-savvy policy makers for future India, he said. IIT-Tirupati director Kalidindi N. Satyanarayana recalled his early efforts of reaching out to engineering colleges to explain the importance of the discipline. The country had completed only half its requirement of infrastructure, he said, emphasising the need for more students to take up core engineering programmes. Directors from IITs in Dharwad, Hyderabad, and Bhubhaneshwar also shared their insights on engineering education at the PALS (Pan IIT Alumni Leadership Series) event. Vijayalakshmi Sankar, co-chair of PALS who presented the annual report said it had delivered 29 programmes reaching out to 23,600 students. It worked with around 50 engineering institutions in six States and Nepal. PALS is an initiative of the IIT alumni that conducts outreach programmes for engineering colleges, including management, faculty and students.
