Gold Prices Rise As Markets Await US Inflation Data
Waleed Farouk
Gold prices rose in local markets during trading on Tuesday, with the ounce rising on the global stock exchange, amid markets awaiting US inflation data to determine US monetary policy trends and gold price movements in the coming period.
Gold prices rose in local markets by about EGP 20 compared to yesterday's close, with the price of 21-karat gold reaching EGP 4,625 per gram, while the price of an ounce rose by $7, reaching $3,245.
The price of 24-karat gold reached EGP 5,286 per gram, the price of 18-karat gold reached EGP 3,964 per gram, and the price of 14-karat gold reached EGP 3,084 per gram, while the price of the gold pound reached EGP 37,000 per gram. Gold prices in local markets fell by EGP 110 during trading on Monday. A gram of 21-karat gold opened at EGP 4,715, touched EGP 4,555, and closed at EGP 4,605. Meanwhile, an ounce fell by $87, opening at $3,325, touching $3,215, and closing at $3,238.
Gold prices rebounded, following a sharp decline on Monday following the announcement of a trade agreement between the United States and China.
The sharp drop in gold prices on Monday followed the announcement of a temporary truce between the United States and China regarding tariffs. The United States agreed to reduce import tariffs from 145% to 30%, while China reduced tariffs from 125% to 10%. Markets are concerned about the lack of details in the trade agreement, which could push prices to any of the record highs reached last month. Therefore, the current decline could be a buying opportunity.
The agreement eased trade tensions and fueled a rally in global stock markets, while the dollar rose to a one-month high—two factors that weaken gold's appeal.
Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Austin Goolsbee warned that current tariff levels will continue to stimulate inflation, according to the New York Times.
Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank issued a report stating that easing trade restrictions on China will not lead to a rapid interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.
Meanwhile, markets are awaiting the US Consumer Price Index report for April later today, which could shape the Fed's policy outlook. A lower-than-expected CPI reading could ease pressure on the Federal Reserve and weaken the dollar, providing short-term support for gold. However, any upside is likely to reinforce expectations for monetary tightening, boosting yields and negatively impacting gold.
Citibank lowered its three-month gold price target from $3,500 to $3,150, citing reduced geopolitical risks and the potential for short-term stability between $3,000 and $3,300. The bank expects continued demand for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) driven by higher savings, but also noted downward pressure from weak jewelry demand and increased supply.
In related news, markets are awaiting U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) and retail sales data this week; weekly U.S. jobless claims; the Empire State Manufacturing Survey; the Philadelphia Manufacturing Survey; Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's remarks in Washington, D.C., on Thursday; and the University of Michigan's preliminary consumer confidence survey on Friday.

Egypt's Sisi orders government to take financial and commodity precautions amid regional escalation
CAIRO – 22 June 2025: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi ordered the government to take all necessary measures regarding all relevant financial and commodity precautions in light of ongoing developments and the escalating situation in the region, said the Egyptian Presidency in a statement after the US attacked Iranian unranuim enrchiment facilities in Iran. President Sisi's comments were stated during a meeting with Prime MinisterDr. Mostafa Madbouly, and Minister of Finance, Mr. Ahmed Kouchouk, on Sunday. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that American aircraft had conducted heavy airstrikes on several Iranian nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. 'A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow,' Trump said. President Sisi's meeting also reviewed the increasing volatility in global markets and the repercussions of geopolitical events, especially the war between Iran and Israel, on the rising state of uncertainty in major international markets, particularly shipping prices and some commodities. Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said the President was briefed on the outcomes of monitoring the utilization of the first tax facilitation initiative up to June 19, 2025. The Minister of Finance indicated that the total number of voluntary tax dispute resolution requests submitted over the past months reached 110,000 requests. He added that the number of amended or new tax declarations submitted by taxpayers reached more than 450,000 declarations, which reflects taxpayers' confidence in the tax facilitation initiative and their positive interaction. These new and amended declarations included declaration for additional taxes totaling EGP 54.76 billion. The Minister also pointed out that the number of taxpayers who applied to benefit from tax incentives and facilitations for projects with an annual turnover not exceeding EGP 20 million, in accordance with Law No. 6 of 2025, has reached 52,901 taxpayers. The meeting also touched on the latest developments in the Ministry of Finance's plan for international issuances for the fiscal year 2024/2025, and the actions taken in this regard in line with the directives to reduce the external debt of budget agencies. Preliminary indicators show the success of the government and the Ministry of Finance in their efforts to reduce the external debt balance of budget entities by an amount ranging from $1 to $2 billion annually. The meeting also included a review of the actual financial performance from July 2024 to May 2025, including achieving a significant and strong primary surplus, reducing the overall deficit, and achieving strong and accelerating growth rates for tax revenues reaching 36%. This was realized through improved economic activity, broadening the tax base, without imposing new financial burdens, and continuous efforts to rationalize expenditures. The meeting also addressed the key targets for the fiscal year 2024/2025, particularly the debt-to-GDP ratio (both domestic and foreign) for budgetary entities, the evolution of tax revenues in the fiscal year 2024/2025, the growth rate, the status of wages and employee compensation, and the status of goods and services purchases and interest. The meeting also reviewed progress in government investments during the fiscal year within the same framework. The Minister of Finance presented the updates on the progress and developments related to monitoring the implementation of the IMF program reforms and the ongoing negotiations to reach an agreement and approve the disbursement of the fifth review's tranche. President El-Sisi directed to benefit from all outstanding international experiences in establishing stable fiscal and tax policies to improve the business environment, broaden the tax base, attract more investments, increase production and exports, and increase employment opportunities. The President also instructed to further strengthen efforts aimed at enhancing fiscal discipline through government measures to contribute to developing the performance of the Egyptian economy and support national development efforts. Additionally, he emphasized continuing to strengthen allocations directed towards social protection, human development, and support programs for priority groups.

War Erupts... Yet Gold Falls?
Waleed Farouk Gold prices recorded a notable decline in local markets over the past week, dropping by approximately 2%, influenced by weakening demand, increased profit-taking, and the strength of the U.S. dollar. According to a report by the 'iSagha' platform, global gold prices fell by 1.8% during the same period, reflecting reduced appetite for the yellow metal as a safe haven despite escalating geopolitical tensions. Saeed Embabi, Executive Director of iSagha, an online platform for trading gold and jewelry, stated that local gold prices dropped by about EGP 100 per gram throughout the week. The 21-karat gold gram opened trading at EGP 4,900 and closed at EGP 4,800. On the global front, the price of an ounce of gold declined from $3,430 to $3,369, losing $61 over the week. Embabi noted that this marks gold's first weekly decline in nearly three weeks, even as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensified, including renewed hostilities between Israel and Iran, as well as the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This reflects a paradox in how markets have responded to geopolitical developments. Despite the recent drop, gold continues to hold a significant position as a safe haven during periods of economic and political uncertainty. In recent weeks, global markets have experienced waves of turbulence that reshaped the risk landscape, pushing gold to record highs. At the peak of the tensions, gold reached $3,451 per ounce, signaling a renewed shift among investors toward safe-haven assets. On the economic front, U.S. inflation data for May showed a slight monthly increase of just 0.1%, reinforcing market expectations that the Federal Reserve may begin cutting interest rates in its upcoming September meeting — a monetary environment typically favorable for gold. The Federal Reserve, in its June 18 meeting, kept interest rates unchanged for the fourth consecutive time, within the range of 4.25% to 4.50%. Following the meeting, Fed Chair Jerome Powell emphasized the continued strength and resilience of the U.S. economy, noting that inflation was gradually approaching the Fed's target levels and that the labor market remained robust. In a noteworthy shift, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled that interest rate cuts could begin as early as July 2025, provided that economic data continues to show moderation. He also downplayed the inflationary impact of tariffs, stating that a 10% tariff on imports would have minimal influence on prices — reducing the likelihood of tariffs being used as justification for further monetary tightening. Support for gold now extends beyond individual investors and hedge funds to include central banks, notably China and Russia, which are bolstering their gold reserves as part of a broader strategy to diversify assets and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar. This institutional demand provides additional support for gold, particularly in the medium and long term. In this context, a recent World Gold Council survey conducted between February 25 and May 20, 2025, involving 73 central banks, revealed that 76% of respondents expect to increase their gold holdings over the next five years — up from 69% in the previous year's survey. Furthermore, 95% anticipate a rise in global gold reserves in the year ahead — the highest percentage since the study's inception. The same study also highlighted a growing trend toward reducing U.S. dollar exposure in central bank reserves, with 75% of participants indicating plans to lower their dollar holdings over the next five years, compared to 62% in 2024. Since the beginning of 2025, gold prices have risen by around 29%, with data showing an increase of over 70% over the past two years. Despite short-term volatility, the broader trend points to gold remaining elevated, supported by a combination of geopolitical instability, monetary easing expectations, and strong demand from emerging and developing markets. In a world increasingly dominated by uncertainty, gold continues to reaffirm its historical role as a shield against crises. It remains an asset free from financial obligations, immune to sovereign defaults or market collapses — a cornerstone for portfolio stability. Markets now await a series of key U.S. economic indicators this week, including the S&P Global Flash PMI on Monday, consumer confidence figures and Jerome Powell's testimony before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, followed by new home sales data and his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday. Thursday will bring weekly jobless claims, durable goods orders, and final Q1 GDP data, while Friday will conclude with the release of the core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation report — all of which are likely to shape the direction of future monetary policy. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand
