There are several kinds of internet technologies in use today, including satellite, DSL and fixed wireless, but none of them come close to cable and fiber when it comes to offering fast, reliable internet.
Nobody likes slow, inconsistent internet. So after having to deal with buffering, lag and regular outages, I finally decided to find out which kind of internet would be the best. Here's what I found out.
Fiber is the undisputed ruler when it comes to speed and reliability. With a fiber connection, you'll get symmetrical upload and download speeds, congestion won't be a common issue and your connection will be more stable. All of those factors make it perfect for streaming, gaming and remote work. Plus, fiber is also future-proof. But cable isn't exactly a bad option. It's still the more widely available one, comes in cheaper up front and ISPs usually bundle it with TV and phone services, making it the more practical choice for many households.
So, which one should you pick? We made this guide breaking down the pros, cons and key differences between cable and fiber internet to help you make the right choice for your home and your budget.

The difference between cable and fiber internet starts with how the service reaches your home.
Locating local internet providers
Cable internet uses coaxial cables, the same ones that bring cable TV to your home. These cables consist of a solid or woven copper wire surrounded by insulating and protective sheathings. The cables are an effective means for transmitting various signals, including those for your internet connection, but signal strength and quality can lessen with distance, interference and network congestion.
Fiber internet uses thin glass strands called fiber-optic cables to carry data, such as your internet service, via light signals. The technology can carry greater amounts of data at faster speeds than coaxial cables and is also better equipped to retain signal strength and quality over long distances, like across the ocean.
The downside of fiber-optic cables is that they are more expensive than coaxial cables, and laying new lines is a logistical challenge. As a result, cable internet boasts far greater availability than fiber.

You're nearly twice as likely to be serviceable for cable internet than fiber internet. Cable connections are available to more than 82% of US households, whereas fiber coverage lands around 43%, according to the FCC.
Both cable and fiber providers largely operate in urban and suburban areas, but cable often provides more broad and consistent coverage throughout a given location. Fiber availability is limited to select areas in a city, and serviceability may vary from one neighborhood to the next.
My hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, is a good example. The main local cable provider, Spectrum, is available to 93% of the city's residential addresses. Two major fiber ISPs, AT&T Fiber and Google Fiber, serve the area, but only around 60% of Charlotte addresses are serviceable for fiber internet.

If you're shopping for cable or fiber internet, you may encounter one or more of the providers above. Then again, there are hundreds of regional and hyper-local cable and fiber internet providers across the US. The available providers in your area will play a role in how much your internet costs, what speeds you can get and other service conditions.
Cable vs. fiber plans and pricing
Plan selection and pricing will vary by provider, but cable is commonly the best source of cheap internet, at least for the first year or two of service. Cable providers such as Astound, WOW and Xfinity, for example, have introductory rates as low as $20 to $25 a month for download speeds ranging from 150 to 300Mbps.
Fiber internet is available for $20 to $30 a month -- Ziply Fiber and Frontier Fiber offer 100Mbps ($20) and 200Mbps ($30) plans, respectively -- but, for the most part, expect to pay at least $40 to $50 monthly for service. AT&T Fiber, Quantum Fiber and Verizon Fios are $50 to $55 per month in most locations, while Google Fiber's cheapest plan starts at $70.

Choosing the cheapest internet plan from a cable or fiber provider often means accepting the slowest speeds. As you get into faster speed tiers -- 500Mbps to 1,000Mbps, or 1 gigabit per second -- pricing is a bit more evenly matched, although cable may still have the advantage, depending on the provider.
In select areas, Astound, Spectrum, WOW and other cable ISPs have lower introductory pricing on gig service than you'll find with most fiber providers. Just keep in mind that while cable internet's low pricing is tempting, it may not last long.
Consider introductory and standard pricing
Cable internet may start out cheaper, but many providers have steep price increases after the first year or two. Depending on the plan you choose, Astound, Mediacom and Xfinity rates can increase by $30 to $50 or more once the introductory pricing expires.
Monthly pricing is a bit more stable with fiber internet. AT&T Fiber has no set price increases after 12 months, Verizon Fios offers a price guarantee of two to four years and Quantum Fiber will lock in your monthly rate for as long as you keep your plan.
When comparing cable and fiber internet providers, be sure to evaluate introductory and standard rates. If you go with cable for the cheaper initial pricing, keep an eye on your bill and be ready to switch internet providers when the promotional pricing period ends.

Like pricing, available speeds will vary by provider, but download speeds will probably be faster with fiber. Upload speeds will definitely be faster.
Most cable and fiber internet providers offer download speeds up to a gig. A few cable ISPs offer speeds higher than a gig -- Astound goes up to 1.5Gbps, WOW has a 1.2Gbps plan and Xfinity stretches to 2Gbps in select areas -- but a single gig is typically the standard max for cable.
With fiber internet, it's not uncommon to have a single gig speed tier, plus multi-gigabit plans with speeds of 2Gbps, 5Gbps, 8Gbps or higher available. Ziply Fiber offers the fastest home internet plan I've encountered with maximum speeds of 50Gbps, or 50,000Mbps.

Notice that with cable internet plans, upload speeds are significantly slower than downloads. That's not necessarily a big deal as upload speeds play less of a role in our internet use (my colleague, Joe Supan, notes that his cable upload speeds are more than enough). Still, it's something to consider when evaluating cable versus fiber internet services.
Cable vs. fiber additional considerations
Price and speed are the two most important factors when choosing an internet provider, but that's not all you will want to take into account. Fees and contracts can have an impact on your satisfaction as a customer. Again, these things are more provider-specific than the technology, but I find fiber to be more favorable.
Equipment, data caps and contracts
Equipment rental fees can easily add $10 to $15 to your monthly bill, perhaps more if you have a mesh system with multiple pods. Select cable and fiber providers include equipment rental at no extra cost, but the scale tilts more to fiber.
Astound offers free equipment rental. Xfinity may include free equipment with select plans, in select areas. Spectrum includes a free modem lease, but renting a router for Wi-Fi will add $10 to your monthly internet cost if you go with the 500Mbps plan. Cox, Mediacom and others may charge $13 to $15 to rent a gateway router.
In contrast, AT&T Fiber, Frontier Fiber, Google Fiber, Quantum Fiber and Verizon Fios, among others, offer free equipment rental.
The only potential downside to fiber is that you may be limited as to where you can put your router. Most homes wired for fiber have an installed ONT (the fiber version of a modem) that may not be in the best location for a router. My ONT, for instance, is hidden behind a closet panel, so my router unfortunately sits in a coat closet.
As for data caps and contracts, fiber providers are again generally more favorable. Nearly all fiber providers I have come across offer unlimited data and few require a contract. Cable ISPs, on the other hand, are more likely to hold you to a data cap and contract with the threat of speed throttling or added fees.
Customer satisfaction favors fiber

One last provider-specific, cable-to-fiber comparison here, but it is one worth noting as it gives insight to how actual customers feel about their service. In the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index report, major fiber providers scored higher than the big cable ISPs.
All named fiber providers (with the exception of Optimum, which is mostly a cable ISP and is notorious for low customer satisfaction), scored above 70/100. The closest cable providers, Cox and Spectrum, came in at 68/100. Granted, the ACSI categorizes fiber and non-fiber providers separately, but I would assume they are evaluated the same.
Another source we like to use for customer satisfaction data, J.D. Power, paints a similar picture. In its 2024 report, a fiber provider led in all four markets: Verizon (East), Google Fiber (South) and AT&T (North Central, West).

Cable internet has its advantages -- availability, low introductory pricing, better bundling options -- but fiber is the superior connection type. Fiber internet is capable of faster speeds, up and down, and is better suited to consistently deliver those speeds, even during peak usage times. Depending on the available ISPs in your area, fiber may be a bit more expensive, but the overall value can't be beat.

Fiber is a superior technology, with faster speeds and better reliability than cable, but there's no need to pay extra for it if your current cable plan meets your needs. It's important to consider more than the advertised monthly rate when shopping for cheap internet. Some cable internet providers appear to be cheap, but added costs such as equipment fees, data overages and built-in price hikes can inflate the cost over time. After evaluating all costs, fiber may prove to be the better value.
Is cable or fiber internet better for gaming?
Along with faster speeds and better reliability, fiber internet is likely to have a lower latency, or ping, than cable internet. Either technology will offer plenty of speed to game online, but the lower ping that comes with fiber will make for a better gaming experience.

Alongside, the company — which currently holds 4,449 bitcoin worth about $462 million — announced a goal of owning at least 10,000 bitcoin by the end of this year, 42,000 by year-end 2026 and 105,000 by year-end 2027. "We are excited to have Joe join our Bitcoin strategy team and help drive our three-year-plan to own 105,000 Bitcoins," said company Chairman Eric Semler in a press release. "Joe is an analytical thought leader on Bitcoin and Bitcoin treasury companies. His expertise will be instrumental as we pursue our Bitcoin treasury strategy and aim to deliver long-term value to our stockholders." "For over seven years, [Joe] has publicly been making the case for Bitcoin as the world's most advanced form of monetary technology," the release continued. "He previously served as director of market research at Unchained, a Bitcoin-focused financial services company." Investors, for now, are applauding the news, sending SMLR higher by 14% on Friday even as bitcoin has dipped back below $104,000 and most BTC-related stocks are trading in the red. Prior to today, though, it's been a rough ride for SMLR, which remains lower by 33% year-to-date and more than 50% off its 2025 high above $80. The sharp share price decline has left the company's market capitalization at or below the value of the bitcoin on its balance sheet — thus taking off the table the ability to accretively raise money for more BTC purchases through common share sales. The hiring of Burnett and lofty BTC acquisition goals suggests Semler is likely to get creative with capital raising plans, perhaps — in similar fashion to Michael Saylor's Strategy — turning to the preferred share market.

Why You Should Never Click Old Discord Invite Links

If you've received an invite link to Discord but never used it to join that specific server, don't click through it weeks or months later. As Bleeping Computer reports, hackers have repurposed Discord invite links that have expired or been deleted to deliver malware, including infostealers and keyloggers. How Discord links are spreading malware The malware campaign, identified by Check Point Research, capitalizes on a flaw in how Discord handles invite links, which can be temporary or permanent or, for paid servers with Level 3 Boost status, customized. URLs to join regular Discord servers are randomly generated and unlikely to ever repeat, but vanity links—as well as expired temporary invite links and deleted permanent invite links—can be claimed and reused. Discord also allows invite codes with uppercase letters to be recycled in vanity links with lowercase letters while the original is still active. This means that hackers can redirect users to malicious servers via links originating from legitimate Discord communities. These links are being shared on social media and official community websites. When a user clicks the stolen link, they land on a Discord server that looks authentic and prompts them to verify their identity to unlock access. The verification link launches a ClickFix web page, which indicates that a (fake) CAPTCHA has failed to load and directs the user to "verify" by manually running a Windows command. This executes a PowerShell script, which downloads and installs the malware. The payload itself may include malicious programs—like AsynchRAT, Skuld Stealer, and ChromeKatz—that allow keylogging, webcam or microphone access, and infostealing to harvest browser credentials, cookies, passwords, Discord tokens, and/or crypto wallet data. According to Check Point's analysis, the malware has numerous features that allow it to evade detection by antivirus tools. The report also notes that while Discord took action to mitigate this specific campaign, the risk of similar bots or alternative delivery methods still exists. How to avoid malicious Discord links First and foremost, be wary of old Discord invite links, especially those posted on social media or forums weeks or months back. (Temporary invite URLs on Discord can be set to expire within 30 minutes or up to a default of seven days.) Don't click links from users you don't know and trust, and request a new invite rather than relying on an old one. You should use caution when engaging with verification requests, especially those that prompt you to copy and run manual commands on your device. ClickFix attacks via fake CAPTCHA requests abound, and any verification that tells you to execute a Run command is not legit. If you run a Discord server, use permanent invite links, which are harder to steal and repurpose than temporary or custom URLs.

Why is AI halllucinating more frequently, and how can we stop it?

The more advanced artificial intelligence (AI) gets, the more it "hallucinates" and provides incorrect and inaccurate information. Research conducted by OpenAI found that its latest and most powerful reasoning models, o3 and o4-mini, hallucinated 33% and 48% of the time, respectively, when tested by OpenAI's PersonQA benchmark. That's more than double the rate of the older o1 model. While o3 delivers more accurate information than its predecessor, it appears to come at the cost of more inaccurate hallucinations. This raises a concern over the accuracy and reliability of large language models (LLMs) such as AI chatbots, said Eleanor Watson, an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) member and AI ethics engineer at Singularity University. "When a system outputs fabricated information — such as invented facts, citations or events — with the same fluency and coherence it uses for accurate content, it risks misleading users in subtle and consequential ways," Watson told Live Science. The crux of a reasoning model is that it can handle complex tasks by essentially breaking them down into individual components and coming up with solutions to tackle them. Rather than seeking to kick out answers based on statistical probability, reasoning models come up with strategies to solve a problem, much like how humans think. In order to develop creative, and potentially novel, solutions to problems, AI needs to hallucinate —otherwise it's limited by rigid data its LLM ingests. "It's important to note that hallucination is a feature, not a bug, of AI," Sohrob Kazerounian, an AI researcher at Vectra AI, told Live Science. "To paraphrase a colleague of mine, 'Everything an LLM outputs is a hallucination. It's just that some of those hallucinations are true.' If an AI only generated verbatim outputs that it had seen during training, all of AI would reduce to a massive search problem." "You would only be able to generate computer code that had been written before, find proteins and molecules whose properties had already been studied and described, and answer homework questions that had already previously been asked before. You would not, however, be able to ask the LLM to write the lyrics for a concept album focused on the AI singularity, blending the lyrical stylings of Snoop Dogg and Bob Dylan." In effect, LLMs and the AI systems they power need to hallucinate in order to create, rather than simply serve up existing information. It is similar, conceptually, to the way that humans dream or imagine scenarios when conjuring new ideas. However, AI hallucinations present a problem when it comes to delivering accurate and correct information, especially if users take the information at face value without any checks or oversight. "This is especially problematic in domains where decisions depend on factual precision, like medicine, law or finance," Watson said. "While more advanced models may reduce the frequency of obvious factual mistakes, the issue persists in more subtle forms. Over time, confabulation erodes the perception of AI systems as trustworthy instruments and can produce material harms when unverified content is acted upon." And this problem looks to be exacerbated as AI advances. "As model capabilities improve, errors often become less overt but more difficult to detect," Watson noted. "Fabricated content is increasingly embedded within plausible narratives and coherent reasoning chains. This introduces a particular risk: users may be unaware that errors are present and may treat outputs as definitive when they are not. The problem shifts from filtering out crude errors to identifying subtle distortions that may only reveal themselves under close scrutiny." Kazerounian backed this viewpoint up. "Despite the general belief that the problem of AI hallucination can and will get better over time, it appears that the most recent generation of advanced reasoning models may have actually begun to hallucinate more than their simpler counterparts — and there are no agreed-upon explanations for why this is," he said. The situation is further complicated because it can be very difficult to ascertain how LLMs come up with their answers; a parallel could be drawn here with how we still don't really know, comprehensively, how a human brain works. In a recent essay, Dario Amodei, the CEO of AI company Anthropic, highlighted a lack of understanding in how AIs come up with answers and information. "When a generative AI system does something, like summarize a financial document, we have no idea, at a specific or precise level, why it makes the choices it does — why it chooses certain words over others, or why it occasionally makes a mistake despite usually being accurate," he wrote. The problems caused by AI hallucinating inaccurate information are already very real, Kazerounian noted. "There is no universal, verifiable, way to get an LLM to correctly answer questions being asked about some corpus of data it has access to," he said. "The examples of non-existent hallucinated references, customer-facing chatbots making up company policy, and so on, are now all too common." Both Kazerounian and Watson told Live Science that, ultimately, AI hallucinations may be difficult to eliminate. But there could be ways to mitigate the issue. Watson suggested that "retrieval-augmented generation," which grounds a model's outputs in curated external knowledge sources, could help ensure that AI-produced information is anchored by verifiable data. "Another approach involves introducing structure into the model's reasoning. By prompting it to check its own outputs, compare different perspectives, or follow logical steps, scaffolded reasoning frameworks reduce the risk of unconstrained speculation and improve consistency," Watson, noting this could be aided by training to shape a model to prioritize accuracy, and reinforcement training from human or AI evaluators to encourage an LLM to deliver more disciplined, grounded responses. Rather than defaulting to confident answers, models can be taught to flag when they're unsure or to defer to human judgement when appropriate," Watson added. "While these strategies don't eliminate the risk of confabulation entirely, they offer a practical path forward to make AI outputs more reliable." Given that AI hallucination may be nearly impossible to eliminate, especially in advanced models, Kazerounian concluded that ultimately the information that LLMs produce will need to be treated with the "same skepticism we reserve for human counterparts."
