Ford has shown the lengths it is willing to go to ensure the Ranger Super Duty is as tough as any Blue Oval bakkie that has ever come before it. Watch the robot-driven torture below.

Development is already underway, and Ford recently gave a glimpse into the kind of punishment the Super Duty is going through at the You Yangs Proving Ground in Australia. To push the limits, they've handed the driving duties over to a robot, literally. The automated test driver has been running the Ranger Super Duty flat-out on the brutal Silver Creek track, a loop packed with 300 uneven bumps designed to simulate years of abuse. With the truck loaded to its full 4 500kg gross vehicle mass, the robot runs it nonstop, pounding everything from suspension components to door hinges. According to Ford, it's the equivalent of a decade of rough treatment in just a few weeks.

In terms of the bakkie itself, it will be easily distinguishable from the standard Ranger. It is replete with a wider and taller stature, alongside 33-inch all-terrain tyres, a snorkel, bigger mirrors, and an off-road bumper, along with fender flares and a unique grille. Underneath, it rides on a reinforced chassis with more ground clearance and a wider track. Ford has also added practical upgrades like a larger fuel tank, built-in scales in the bed and front and rear diff locks.
Power comes from the same 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel found in the regular Ranger, but tuned to meet heavy-duty emissions standards. It's still got enough muscle to haul a serious load, towing capacity has jumped to 4 500kg, a full tonne more than the standard model. For anyone who needs a bakkie that can take a beating and keep going, the Ranger Super Duty looks like it's being built for exactly that.

Ford Territory a worthy contender in a crowded SUV segment
Worthy contender: The Ford Territory is value for money in the mid-sized SUV segment. The local SUV segment has become crowded but South Africans are not complaining. Our less-than-perfect roads have led to many of us looking for vehicles with higher ground clearance and, luckily, all the manufacturers are giving us their own little twist on SUVs. Ford reintroduced the Territory as its answer to the growing middle-sized SUV market. It is built in China and the thin, curved headlights resemble a few of the Chinese vehicles we see on the market. It doesn't necessarily have the characteristics of a Ford on the exterior. While it misses the mark of the traditional rugged look that the brand is known for, its aim was to release an SUV that looked commanding, agile and responsive. The Territory's front end is framed coast-to-coast by an integrated grille and LED daytime running lights, creating a signature light effect. The back of the vehicle has tail lights that are also curved but separated by the branding in the middle. Altogether, the exterior has a more energetic and unique feel than the average Ford. The spacious interior is the highlight of the Ford Territory. The interior I feel this is where the Territory does its best work. It continues to divert away from the extreme rugged nature of Ford SUVs, but it feels refreshing. The wooden finish underneath the very nice materials on the dashboard gives the interior an upmarket and modern feel. At the centre of the new Territory experience is a panoramic display that integrates a 12.3-inch high-definition digital instrument cluster paired to a 12.3-inch landscape infotainment touchscreen. This caps off the luxurious nature of the interior and brings it all together exceptionally well. The Titanium variant comes standard with a huge panoramic moonroof that flows all the way to the back of the vehicle. While the aesthetics blend together well, the best part of the Ford Territory is the practicality of the interior. The front passengers are treated to very large and comfortable seats and the back is as spacious as mid-sized SUVs come. This was the feedback I received from anyone who sat at the back of the vehicle — they were impressed at the amount of headroom and legroom that was offered. The interior of the Ford Territory sports a premium feel. The drive The Ford Territory has a 1.8 litre EcoBoost engine that delivers 138kW of power and 318Nm of torque. That is more than sufficient for easy overtakes on the highway. It also provides a smooth drive. The engine is refined and there's not much wind noise in the cabin. The handling and suspension also felt sturdy and solid, making navigating up steep hills effortless. The Territory felt comfortable to drive — until I hit traffic on the N3. That's when I started noticing the sensitive calibration of the brakes and throttle. The jerk I felt every time I applied the brakes became annoying. You will get used to it, but it is certainly not ideal, and it detracts from what is otherwise a splendid driving experience. Ford has claimed 7 litres/100km on the Territory but I could only manage 8.3 litres/100km when I had the vehicle on test. Safety On the safety front, all Territory models are equipped with electronic stability control with traction control; emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; hill launch assist; hill descent control and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Six airbags — dual front, side and curtain — are provided. The Titanium gains Ford's advanced driver assistance package which includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go; automatic emergency braking; blind spot information system; rear cross-traffic alert; forward collision warning with pedestrian detection; lane keep assist; lane departure warning and lane change assist. It seems that Ford has benefited greatly from its partnership with Jiangling Motors Corporation to include all of these safety features in the Territory. Pricing and verdict The Ford Territory comes in three variants: the Ambiente priced from R576 000, the Trend priced from R632 600 and the top-of-the-range Titanium priced at R707 000. The Territory is very uncharacteristic of Ford SUVs and it brings the fresh and more modern feeling that consumers have become accustomed to in this segment. The technology, along with the incredible amount of space that the Territory offers, makes it well worth the price. However, it must be noted that, with the rise of Chinese cars in South Africa, the Territory enters a segment that is packed, but it is certainly a worthy contender.

Volvo's Electric EX30 Cross Country confirmed for SA
Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that the EX30 Cross Country will arrive locally in the third quarter of 2025. Built on the standard model, this will serve as a tougher, more rugged counterpart. Volvo has given the EX30 a raised ride height (19mm higher than the standard EX30), chunkier body cladding, and 19-inch five-spoke wheels finished in Matte Graphite with black aero inserts. Other design tweaks help the Cross Country stand out from the standard EX30. The front shield and boot lid wear a darker finish, and model-specific artwork on the front end takes inspiration from Sweden's Kebnekaise mountain range. Skid plates and wheel arch extensions complete the rugged aesthetic. South African buyers will get the Cross Country in the Ultra Twin Performance trim only. That means a fully loaded cabin with a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, and a long list of safety and driver assistance features over 15 in total, including Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera. Volvo will also offer accessories like mudflaps, a roof basket, and a load carrier for added versatility. The 69kWh battery pack offers a claimed WLTP range of 427km. Fast-charging capability means a 10 to 80% top-up takes just 26 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger. 'The EX30 Cross Country builds on everything people love about the EX30, adding rugged capability and distinctive design details,' said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's head of marketing and communications. 'It's a refined, all-electric SUV that feels equally at home on gravel roads or in the city, offering South Africans a practical way to go further with confidence.' The arrival of the EX30 Cross Country highlights Volvo's ongoing shift to electrification, with the brand aiming for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up nearly all global sales by 2030. JAC unveils limited-edition T9 Hunter bakkie for SA market only
JAC Motors South Africa has just unveiled a new, limited-edition version of its T9 Hunter bakkie for the local market following a record-breaking endurance test at Gerotek. Not so long ago, Chinese automaker JAC embarked on setting a new record, involving a gruelling 24-hour endurance challenge, where the T9 bakkie was pushed far beyond typical road limits. The challenge, held at the Gerotek Testing Facility in Pretoria, saw a T9 2l CTi cover 4 084 km at an average speed of 170.1km/h over the period. This distance broke the previous 15-year-old record for commercial vehicles held by Isuzu. To celebrate this accomplishment, JAC is producing an exclusive run of only 24 T9 Hunter units. Each of these special bakkies will be individually numbered and will receive unique upgrades over the standard T9, including enhanced performance and comfort features. While full details are still under wraps, this limited production run is clearly designed to offer buyers a tangible piece of the T9's track success. Under the bonnet, the T9 Hunter retains the potent powertrain used in the record-breaking test (which is a stock, factory unit). This means a 2l intercooled turbo-diesel engine that generates 144kW of power and 487N.m of torque. Power is delivered through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. 'Our sales figures reflect the increasing confidence customers have in our products,' Göbel stated. Indeed, T9 sales have seen a nearly 28% increase from January to May 2025 compared with the same period last year, while the popular T8 has surged by a massive 140%. The remainder of 2025 will see the brand introduce the T9 Plug-in Hybrid, marking its entry into the electrified bakkie market. This will be followed by the arrival of the T6 single-cab, catering to a more utility-focused segment. Additionally, engine updates are planned for both the T8 and X200 models, promising improved performance and efficiency across the lineup.
