Jackie Chan jokes about making Rush Hour 4 at 100, teases return to Shanghai Noon sequel

Express Tribune30-05-2025

Jackie Chan recently offered a humorous update on the long-anticipated Rush Hour 4, joking that both he and co-star Chris Tucker might be past their prime by the time it finally happens. Speaking with ScreenRant, Chan quipped, 'Hurry up! Otherwise, Chris Tucker and me [will be] 100 years old. We'll be old men doing Rush Hour,' when asked about the sequel's status.
Though no official production timeline has been announced, Chan emphasized he's still eager to return to the franchise, which launched in 1998 and earned over $850 million globally across three films. The last entry, Rush Hour 3, hit theaters in 2007. Chan previously shared in 2017 that he and Tucker had agreed on a script, but progress has since stalled.
Alongside Rush Hour, Chan is also eyeing a return to another early-2000s buddy comedy series. He confirmed that a third installment in the Shanghai Noon franchise, titled Shanghai Dawn, remains in development. 'The script is still going on,' Chan told ScreenRant.
Back in 2016, Chan and Owen Wilson were reportedly working on the sequel with MGM. Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) was attached to direct, based on a story by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, with a script by Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum.
As Chan revisits some of his most iconic roles, fans of both franchises are hopeful that long-awaited sequels will eventually move forward. While timelines remain uncertain, Chan's playful optimism and continued enthusiasm suggest audiences may not have seen the last of these beloved duos.

Jerry Bruckheimer hints at Johnny Depp's return as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6

Pirates of the Caribbean franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently shared an update on the highly anticipated sixth installment, revealing that some familiar faces will return, but the movie will take a "new take" on the beloved franchise. The long-awaited sequel has been in the works since the release of Dead Men Tell No Tales, though the project hit a setback after Johnny Depp's departure due to his defamation trial against Amber Heard. Depp, who portrayed the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow, previously expressed no desire to reprise his role, leaving fans wondering about the future of the series. In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for F1, scheduled to release on June 27, Bruckheimer discussed the current status of the film, confirming that the script is still being developed. In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, Bruckheimer gave insight into the film's current status and its direction: 'We're working on a screenplay. Hopefully we'll get it right — and then we'll make it. We really want to make it, that's for sure,' Bruckheimer said, emphasizing the team's dedication to getting the script right before moving forward. When asked if the upcoming film would be a continuation of previous stories or something entirely new, he responded, 'It'll be a new take on it.' On the subject of casting, Bruckheimer confirmed, 'Well, not all new actors. We'll have some back,' hinting at the return of some familiar characters. However, when pressed on which characters would be rejoining the cast, he remained tight-lipped, adding, 'I'm not going to tell you which ones — you'll have to guess.' With the script still in development, Bruckheimer's comments suggest that the next Pirates of the Caribbean film will feature a blend of fresh perspectives while still staying rooted in the legacy of the franchise. With the last release taking place more than 7 years ago, and our beloved Jack Sparrow facing a malicious legal battle in between and even more coming victorious out of it,somehow makes the next installment even more anticipated with his return.

Tyler Perry's Straw divides audiences with emotional performances and flawed storytelling on Netflix

Tyler Perry's latest film, Straw, debuted June 6 on Netflix and is already stirring strong reactions. While praised by some viewers for its emotional intensity, the film has also drawn criticism for its forced plot and underwhelming production design. Written and directed by Perry, Straw follows Janiyah (played by Taraji P. Henson), a single mother enduring a string of hardships—losing her job, facing eviction, and clashing with a corrupt police officer—before finding herself entangled in a high-stakes confrontation at a bank. Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns critiques the film's plot for feeling overly contrived, stating that its attempts to build tension often come off as predictable and illogical. However, he acknowledges that Henson's emotionally charged performance adds a compelling depth to an otherwise uneven story. A dramatic twist involving a vision of police storming the bank and shooting Janiyah momentarily evokes sympathy, but is quickly reversed, weakening the film's emotional payoff. Hermanns also notes that despite moments of effective drama, the film's low production quality—reportedly filmed in just four days—detracts from its impact. Sets appear underdressed, and the cinematography lacks polish, making the experience feel visually flat. Still, Henson's performance is widely praised, with many agreeing she delivers a powerful portrayal of a woman pushed to her limits. Sherri Shepherd's supporting role as a compassionate bank manager also earned recognition. Audience reactions online are deeply divided. While some viewers resonate with the film's raw depiction of systemic struggles, others criticize its logic and execution. Whether seen as a flawed social drama or a necessary emotional outcry, Straw is undeniably sparking conversation—and controversy—on Netflix.

Neil Patrick Harris voices Deadpool in VR game launching 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S

A new virtual reality title, Marvel's Deadpool VR, is set to launch exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S in late 2025, according to a report from ScreenRant by Brandon Key. The game was revealed during the Summer Game Fest, with Neil Patrick Harris announced as the voice of Deadpool in this immersive first-person action experience. Developed by Twisted Pixel Games and Oculus Studios in collaboration with Marvel Games, the game introduces an original storyline not based on existing Marvel material. Deadpool finds himself pulled through a portal to Mojoworld, where he signs a shady contract and begins a chaotic quest for riches across the Marvel universe. The trailer highlights Deadpool's signature humor, fourth-wall breaking, and self-awareness, with the character openly acknowledging his existence inside a VR game. Players will take on the role of Deadpool, using dual pistols, katanas, kunai, and parkour-style movement to navigate the game's action-packed environments. Drawing on its previous VR work with Path of the Warrior, developer Twisted Pixel Games promises a unique and exaggerated combat system tailored for the VR format. Combat scenarios include over-the-top actions like using severed limbs as weapons, tossing grenades back at enemies, and shoving heads into propellers—true to Deadpool's irreverent style. This marks the character's first major game appearance since the 2013 cult-classic Deadpool by Activision. With Harris bringing a fresh take to the Merc with a Mouth and gameplay designed to reflect the character's chaotic personality, Marvel's Deadpool VR could mark a bold new direction for Marvel's future in VR gaming.
