UFC: Oliveira vs Topuria lightweight fight at 317; Du Plessis defends middleweight belt

The Hindu14-05-2025

UFC CEO Dana White announced the main and co-main events for UFC 317 that headline the promotion's annual International Fight Week on June 28 on Wednesday.
In the main event, former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira will take on former featherweight titleholder Ilia Topuria for the vacant lightweight title.
Oliveira is coming off a Fight of the Night-earning performance against Michael Chandler at UFC 309 last November. Former featherweight champion Topuria is fresh off back-to-back knockouts and title defences, and UFC 317 would mark the Spaniard's return to lightweight for the first time since his 2022 KO victory over Jai Herbert.
Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev will be vacating his title to move up to the UFC welterweight division to face newly crowned champion Jack Della Maddalena at a later time and date.
The co-main event will see flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja collide with the hard-hitting Kai Kara-France. Pantoja enters the fight on a 7-fight tear, with his last three outings being successful title defences. Kara-France is coming off a quick TKO over Erceg and will be aiming to make the most of his second crack at UFC gold.

White also revealed middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis' next bout. The South African will defend his title against Khamzat Chimaev in the headliner at UFC 319 in Chicago on August 18.
Du Plessis most recently held serve in his rematch against Sean Strickland at UFC 312 in Sydney, Australia, besting the former champion on the scorecards for a second time. His third defence is perhaps one of the more anticipated matchups.
Chimaev, 31, burst onto the scene in 2020, scoring three wins in one of the more stunning breakouts in recent memory. He has solidified his contender status at middleweight, and 'Borz' finally gets his shot against the in-form Du Plessis.
Additional Announced Bouts:
UFC 317
Brandon Royval vs Manel Kape
Paulo Costa vs Roman Kopylov
Beneil Dariush vs Renato Moicano
Jack Hermansson vs Gregory Rodrigues
Jhonata Diniz vs Justin Tafa
Viviane Araujo vs Tracy Cortez
UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs de Ridder (Abu Dhabi)

Queen's Club Championships 2025: Alcaraz cruises past Bautista Agut, Lehecka stuns Draper in semifinals

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz breezed past fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut while Jiri Lehecka stunned home favourite Jack Draper in the semifinals of the Queen's Club Championships in London on Saturday. World No. 2 Alcaraz, who clinched his maiden grasscourt title at the same event in 2023, defeated 37-year-old Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4. The 22-year-old Alcaraz also extended his unbeaten streak to 17 matches. In the first semifinal, Lehecka defeated World No. 6 Draper 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, becoming the first Czech man to reach an ATP grasscourt final in 15 years. Czech-mate ♟️@jirilehecka puts the pieces together to defeat Draper and book his place in the Queen's final!# — Tennis TV (@TennisTV) June 21, 2025 Second seed Draper, bidding to follow in the footsteps of five-time Queen's champion Andy Murray, dropped his opening service game and Lehecka barely a put a foot wrong as he took the first set in clinical fashion. Left-hander Draper saved a break point early in the second set and then broke fellow 23-year-old Lehecka's serve for the first time in the 10th game to level the match. Both players were rock solid on serve in the decider with Lehecka having the first chance of a break at 4-4 but Draper survived to pile the pressure on his opponent. Lehecka did not flinch though and broke serve at 5-5 with two stunning passing shots, one a forehand and then a backhand, to leave Draper smashing his racket in rage against a court-side electronic advertising board and receiving a code violation. There was still the small matter of holding serve to reach the final but Lehecka did that in style, roaring his delight after clinching his first victory against a top-10 player since beating Alcaraz in Doha in February. The last Czech man to reach a top-level grasscourt final was Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon in 2010 and the last to do so at Queen's was Ivan Lendl in 1990.

Italian MotoGP 2025: Marc Marquez overcomes poor launch to win sprint

Ducati's polesitter Marc Marquez overcame a botched start to win the Italian Grand Prix sprint ahead of his brother Alex and team mate Francesco Bagnaia on Saturday to maintain his dominance in the shorter format this season. It was Marc's eighth sprint victory in nine rounds this season as he extended his lead in the riders' championship to 35 points over second-placed Alex while Bagnaia is now 98 points behind. Marc had become the first rider to claim 100 career pole positions when he broke the lap record earlier on Saturday but the Spaniard was seen fiddling with a setting near his handlebar just before the lights went out. He had less than a second to look up and see the lights go out, executing a poor launch off the line as a result and falling outside the top four while Bagnaia moved into the lead on one of his favourite circuits. 'But we gave a good show out there. We won the sprint race. That was not the main target. The main target was to try not to lose a lot of points. 'But all these Italian fans enjoyed the show because the comeback was super nice.' Marc recovered by the end of lap one to sit behind Bagnaia and Alex as the three Ducatis went side-by-side heading into turn one to the delight of the roaring crowd before Alex squeezed through unscathed on his Gresini bike to take the lead. Marc then locked horns with home favourite Bagnaia to overtake him before using his brother's slipstream to take the lead on lap four when going at more than 350 kph. Once he had clean air in front of him, Marc took complete command of the sprint and set the pace as he slowly extended his lead over Alex to more than a second while Bagnaia desperately held on to third while also receiving track limit warnings. As Marc took the chequered flag ahead of Alex, Bagnaia managed to keep Maverick Vinales at bay and the KTM rider came fourth while Fabio Di Giannantonio of VR46 Racing completed the top five.

"I think what we've seen, from year one to year two, the domestic cricketers, the quality has improved a lot. And that's in any league around the world. If you create enough opportunity, people do rise to the top," said the 40-year-old to "So I think, yeah, if you fast forward this league, I think in 10 years time from now, it'll be exciting to see what American cricket can do."
