Rico Bogen wins men's T100 San Francisco in commanding style

The 24-year-old from Germany was forced to settle for third in last year's event, pipped to the finish line by Marten Van Riel and Kyle Smith in a thrilling sprint finish.
Fast forward a year later, and it was quite the opposite for Bogen who produced a commanding solo victory, with Jelle Geens and Mika Noodt completing the podium.
It marked a completely new top three from the season opener in Singapore just one month ago, with Geens returning to form after a DNF in Singapore.
"It was quite emotional with some tears of joy in the end," Bogen said.
"I had a really good day and Jelle wasn't closing with too much time. I knew my legs were okay and on the last lap, I knew I should have it.
"My parents are so happy and it was good they could come out here and we can celebrate today."
Bogen was in the middle of the pack coming out of the swim but was biding his time, slowly making his way up the field on the bike leg to take the lead with 30km to go and extend his gap leading into the run.
He added: "On the bike we were in a big group but I found it quite easy and so on the third lap I decided to go.
"My legs were great today and so with two and a half minutes lead, I didn't over pace the run at the beginning and just kept it rolling.
"Last year was incredible but this time is was so good that I could hold the pace until the end."
Firmly out in front, the German was unaware of the changes behind him, with wildcard Jamie Riddle in second before serving a 30 second penalty from T2 and slipping back to fourth.
With Geens having cemented his place in second, it was still all to play for in third, with Riddle, Noodt, Smith and Van Riel all in with a chance on the run but it was ultimately Noodt who made his mark, shaking off challenges to take his first T100 podium of the season.
"I think I need to be happy today and Rico was in a league of his own, I'm definitely satisfied with second," said Geens.
"On the run it was very technical and on the way out we had a headwind and it so it was a bit like a fartlek run," added Noodt.
"But I managed to do well and then on the final lap I managed to do a hard surge for 20 seconds to make the podium.
"I feel like I haven't peaked yet in training but this sets me up well for the season and there is still room for improvement."
Smith crossed for fourth place in his first T100 of the season whilst last year's San Francisco champion and reigning T100 champion Van Riel took fifth.

New Michael Schumacher health condition update as truth and fiction cleared up

New Michael Schumacher health condition update as truth and fiction cleared up There have been true and false claims made to date about Michael Schumacher's health status, with more than a decade having past since his skiing accident which left him with life-altering injuries Flavio Briatore has revealed he is contact with Michael Schumacher's wife, Corinna (Image: Getty Images ) There have been precious few detailed updates on Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher's condition following his devastating skiing accident. Schumacher was in the French Alps in December 2013 where he hit his head on a rock and suffered a near-fatal brain injury. Now 56, he has been kept out of public view ever since, with only a select number of visitors allowed inside the family home near Lake Geneva in Switzerland, where he is receiving round-the-clock medical care. ‌ Earlier this month, one of his former team bosses, Flavio Briatore, revealed he is in regular communication with Schumacher's wife, Corinna. The Italian, who was in charge at Benetton, where the German won his first two F1 titles, told Corriere della Sera: "If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. ‌ "I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." That followed a more detailed update from Briatore's ex-wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who claimed: "Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him and I know who they are." Following that update, here is what we know to be true about Schumacher's condition… Article continues below Claims Schumacher could walk In 2016,German magazine Bunte claimed in an article Schumacher was able to walk and "raise an arm". It raised huge hopes among fans amid previous rumours of progress in his condition. However, the Schumacher family took legal action against the magazine, with the report branded 'irresponsible' . The court hearing resulted in Schumacher's lawyer, Felix Damm, revealing that the then-47-year-old was unable to walk or stand, even with assistance. 'Unfortunately, we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true,' a family statement said. 'Such speculation is irresponsible because, given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael. Unfortunately, they also give false hopes to many involved people.' ‌ Reported stem cell treatment In 2019, Schumacher was reported to have undergone stem cell treatment in an effort to regenerate his nervous system. Le Parisien claimed he was admitted for transfusions of inflammation-reducing stem cells, and also quoted an anonymous nurse who claimed Schumacher was showing signs of recovery. "Yes he is in my service," the nurse said. "And I can assure you that he is conscious." However, the racer is believed to have developed muscle atrophy and osteoporosis after being bed-bound. French magazine Paris Match spoke to what it described as "close relatives" ahead of his 50th birthday in January 2019. The magazine quoted one as saying: "When you put him in his wheelchair facing the beautiful panorama of the mountains overlooking the lake, Michael sometimes cries." ‌ The Schumacher family refused to comment on any of the reports or confirm the stem cell treatment. Daughter's wedding claim rebuffed Reports surfaced in Germany last year claiming Schumacher was present at the wedding of his daughter, Gina-Maria, and Iain Bethke in Majorca. While the family does have a home on the Spanish island, reports that Michael attended his daughter's nuptials were dismissed as 'fake news'. One of his former team-mates, Johnny Herbert, said: 'Unfortunately, from what I understand, that was all A1 fake news and no truth in it.' ‌ Johnny Herbert and Schumacher were Benetton team-mates in the mid-1990s (Image: Ben Radford/ALLSPORT ) Helmet signing Earlier this year, it was revealed that Schumacher had signed a helmet for F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart's dementia charity. The seven-time world champion signed his initials 'MS' on the helmet with the aid of Corinna. It will be auctioned to raise money for Stewart's Race Against Dementia charity, set up by the three-time world champion after his wife Helen began suffering from the disease. ‌ Stewart confirmed to the Daily Mail: 'It is wonderful that Michael could sign the helmet in this worthy cause, a disease for which there is no cure." However, Stewart did also dispel the idea that Schumacher did the act by himself, adding: "His wife helped him, and it completed the set of every single champion still with us.' The Frenchman has offered updates about his friend's condition while asking for the media to respect the family's privacy. Todt told La Repubblica earlier this year: 'The family has decided not to answer the question [on his condition], a choice that I respect. "I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family. Our bond goes beyond the past work. It is part of my life, which today is very far from Formula 1." ‌ Jean Todt is a trusted confidante of the Schumacher family (Image: Getty Images ) Todt previously revealed he watches F1 races with Schumacher, telling German broadcaster RTL in 2022: "I don't miss Michael. I see him. Yes, it's true, I watch races with Michael. But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together." In 2023, he revealed to L'Equipe : "[He] is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children, who protect him.' ‌ Schumacher's inner circle Earlier this year, Felix Gorner – a reporter for RTL – said that Schumacher is "completely dependant" on caregivers and "can no longer express himself verbally". Gorner added that 20 people have access to the former Mercedes driver, a deliberate choice by the family to protect his privacy. That should come as no surprise, as Schumacher was fiercely protective of his family's privacy during the height of his racing fame. Schumacher's privacy has been fiercely protected by Corrina (Image: Getty Images ) Article continues below 'Michael is here' Corinna has been at the forefront of the battle to ensure her husband's privacy. However, as part of the 2021 Netflix documentary Schumacher, she offered a rare truthful insight into his condition. "Michael is here. Different, but he's here, and that gives us strength, I find," she shared with fans. "We live together at home. We do therapy. 'We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable, and to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.'

Florian Wirtz's reaction on bench says it all about Liverpool's £116m record buy

Liverpool broke the bank to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116million, with the 22-year-old already showing he has the character to thrive at the highest level Football recruitment often hinges on the finances, but understanding the true character of a player is a different ball game. Thankfully, Liverpool fans have already been given a glimpse into the temperament of new signing Florian Wirtz. The Merseysiders have splashed out an initial £100million for Wirtz, potentially rising to £116m, and set a new British transfer record. The 22-year-old played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen 's Bundesliga title win under Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso last year, although this season saw the German crown return to Bayern Munich. ‌ And it was during a Champions League round-of-16 match between the two German juggernauts that Wirtz revealed a bit more about his personality. However, it had nothing to do with his performance on the pitch. ‌ TV cameras caught his reaction on the bench after he was substituted while his team were losing 3-0 at the Allianz Arena back in March. Both Wirtz and close pal Jeremie Frimpong, who has also made the move to Anfield this summer, were taken off with the first-leg result seemingly decided. But the reactions of Liverpool's new pair on the Leverkusen bench were markedly different. While footage showed Frimpong staring blankly, Wirtz didn't hide his frustrations moments after being withdrawn as he reacted to his team's impending defeat that ultimately led to their Champions League exit. With only nine minutes left on the clock, the maestro couldn't contain his frustration and unleashed a tirade at his team-mate. Wirtz was visibly enraged, spitting and burying his face in his hands in fury, acutely aware that he, or perhaps his team, had not measured up in this crucial moment. The Liverpool Echo reports how the incident is telling of the high standards Wirtz sets, not just for himself but for those around him, too. He's previously lauded Liverpool as one of the "top three clubs in the world," highlighting his ambition for what could be achieved in future years. In an era where young footballers are often slated for lacking grit due to their hefty pay packages, Wirtz showed he doesn't fit that stereotype. And his reaction to being taken off, even during a heavy loss, underscores his relentless desire to make an impact on the pitch at all times. ‌ He'll undoubtedly be demanding excellence under Arne Slot, who's already making his mark on the squad this summer. The prompt acquisition of Frimpong softens the blow of Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure and provides Wirtz with a familiar face in the changing room. Meanwhile, the Reds are nearing a £40m deal for Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez. The Hungarian sensation has been turning heads with his stellar displays on the south coast and seems poised to take over from Andy Robertson at Anfield in the long run. Slot seems to be keen on bolstering his defensive line-up, with Marc Guehi also believed to be back in Liverpool's sights. Jarell Quansah could well be off to Leverkusen, and Crystal Palace's star defender Guehi is tipped to replace him should that be the case. ‌ The Bundesliga has been dominated by a couple of teams in recent years, but Wirtz could face stiffer competition in England. This means he'll need to be at his best to help Liverpool maintain top spot, especially with Arsenal and Manchester City poised to surge again this coming campaign. Supporters shouldn't worry about the quality Wirtz will bring once he starts playing in Merseyside. And it seems they can also rest assured of the player's determination to excel at every opportunity.

Close friend of Michael Schumacher shares heartbreaking update

The seven-time world champion Formula 1 driver hasn't been publically seen since his skiing incident in December 2013. A new heartbreaking update has been shared on the condition of former F1 racer Michael Schumacher. Former Benetton boss Flavio Briatore, who often talks with Schumacher's wife, says he prefers to remember the driver 'smiling after a victory' than in his current condition. The 56-year-old has not been seen in public for well over a decade after he was caught up in a high-speed skiing incident in Meribel in December 2013. This resulted in the seven-time world champion sustaining long-term injuries. ‌ Since the accident, his wife Corinna has kept details about his treatment and progress private from the public, reports the Express. Back in a 2021 Netflix documentary titled Schumacher, she did not share any details about his condition at the time, but did talk about the impact the ordeal has had on his family. ‌ She shared: "Michael is here. Different, but he's here, and that gives us strength, I find. We live together at home. We do therapy. "We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable, and to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. "We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives. 'Private is private', as he always said. It's very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael." She added: "I miss Michael every day. But it's not just me who misses him. It's the children, the family, his father, everyone around him." ‌ While there are a few select people who are allowed to see Micheal, Flavio Briatore has been revealed to be one of them. The 75-year-old Italian businessman has kept in frequent contact with Corrina, and he has now shared with the public a brief look into Schuamcher's life. Unfortunately, his update does suggest that the F1 racer is still severely restricted in terms of mobility. Speaking to Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera, he said: "If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." ‌ This statement follows claims made by Briatore's former spouse, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who said: "Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him and I know who they are." Briatore first joined Benetton in 1985, before taking over as the team principal only six years later. One of his first major moves in the role was to sign Schumacher from Jordan, which was seen as a pivotal moment in F1 history. In 1994 and 1995, the German driver won his first two world titles. From there, he later joined Ferrari and was crowned champion five times between 2000 and 2004. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It has previously been reported by German journalist, Felix Gorner, that Schumacher is "completely dependent" on his caregivers and "can no longer express himself verbally". In the last 11 years, Briatore's statement is one of the few public comments released about Schumacher, showing how private Corrina would like to keep his condition. At the 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix, Sir Jackie Stewart wore a helmet with the initials 'MS' on it as a tribute to the driver during a special celebratory lap. This gesture was said to be backed by Schumacher's wife and is one of the few tributes allowed to take place concerning Schumacher's accident over the years.
