F, M, and J visa applicants to US must make social media accounts public, says Indian embassy

The United States Monday announced a new requirement for all individuals applying for F, M, or J non-immigrant visas: they must adjust the privacy settings on all their personal social media accounts to 'public'. The move is aimed at enhancing national security through more thorough vetting procedures. 'Every visa adjudication is a national security decision. Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J non-immigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their personal social media accounts to 'public' to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States,' the US Embassy in India (@USAndIndia) said in a post on X. In a follow-up slide in the same post, the embassy noted that the US has already been requiring all visa applicants to provide social media identifiers on both immigrant and non-immigrant visa forms. It added that this data is used in visa screening and vetting processes to identify those who may pose a threat to US national security and would therefore be deemed inadmissible. Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J nonimmigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to public to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States… — U.S. Embassy India (@USAndIndia) June 23, 2025 The change comes amid the imposition of a new travel ban by the US government, which now completely restricts citizens from 12 countries and partially restricts those from seven others. These restrictions cover access to non-immigrant visas, including those for tourism, education, and employment, and are primarily aimed at countries in the Middle East and Africa considered high-risk for security and terrorism-related concerns. However, Indian nationals are not affected by the new travel ban. Despite ongoing tensions in parts of the Middle East, the US has clarified that India is not on the list of countries facing the restrictions. Applications from Indian citizens across categories, including B1/B2 tourist visas, H1B work permits, and F1 student visas, continue to be processed. India, now the largest source of international students in the US for the first time since 2008-09, had over 3.31 lakh students enrolled in American universities in 2024, overtaking China.

Tharoor praises PM: Shashi calls Modi 'prime asset'; hails his 'energy, dynamism and willingness to engage'

(IANS photo) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi , saying his energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a 'prime asset' for India globally. These remarks could strain his relationship with Congress party leadership. Tharoor made these comments in an article in the Hindu and it comes at a time when Congress has been critical of PM Modi government's foreign policy decisions. The party has alleged that Indian diplomacy is being 'shattered' and the country stands 'isolated' globally. Tharoor's supportive stance towards the PM appears to conflict with his party's position, potentially widening existing rifts between him and Congress leadership. Tharoor acknowledged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vigour and diplomatic engagement remain valuable for India internationally, though requiring additional support. These comments, made on Monday, might create tension within his party and further strain his relationship with its leadership. The timing of Tharoor's commendation is notable, as it comes when the Congress has consistently criticised the Modi government's foreign policy, claiming that Indian diplomacy is deteriorating and the nation faces international isolation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 40세 미만이라면 이 매혹적인 게임을 하지 마세요 경복의 바다 게임 플레이 Undo In his article, Tharoor highlighted that the diplomatic efforts following 'Operation Sindoor' demonstrated national unity and successful communication. The Prime Minister's Office shared Tharoor's article on X, noting "Lok Sabha MP and former Union Minister Dr. Shashi Tharoor writes- Lessons from Operation Sindoor's global outreach." The BJP criticised the Congress regarding Tharoor's article, suggesting it contradicted Rahul Gandhi's position. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari commented on X about Tharoor's recognition of PM Modi's international engagement benefiting India. Tharoor's article emphasised that "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a prime asset for India on the global stage but deserves greater backing." He noted that the diplomatic response to 'Operation Sindoor' demonstrated India's ability to effectively communicate its position internationally when united. Tharoor had led a multi-party delegation to various countries to present India's position following the Pahalgam incident.

Bratya worried over fate of Netaji Subhas univ sports bill

1 2 3 Kolkata: Bengal education minister Bratya Basu on Monday expressed concern over the fate of the Netaji Subhas University of Sports and Entrepreneurship Bill, 2025, noting that three varsity bills were already stuck "in the cold storage of Raj Bhavan". "This will be the state's 48th university. I don't know whether this bill will face the same fate," Basu said in the assembly during a discussion on the legislation. Underlining the importance of public-private partnership in sports development, he said: "Private initiatives can play a vital role in producing athletes and this university aims to set that example — with the state playing the supportive role." The CM was leading this effort, Basu said, adding: "What we need now is strong resolve and inspiration. This institution will become a guiding light for future sporting disciplines. " The remarks came on a day when the Private University Bill was passed in the assembly amid loud protests and disruptions by opposition MLAs. While the opposition opposed the Sports University proposal, Basu criticised their absence during the debate. "They chose instead to play games with the marshals, who had to demonstrate their physical skills in return," he quipped. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Calcule cuánto podría ganar invirtiendo $100 en Amazon CFD y otras acciones de indetenible InvestIQ Solicita ahora Undo Citing Bengal's rising stature in Indian sports, the minister said: "For the first time, Bengal ranked among the top 10 states in sports." Referring to wrestler Sakshi Malik's performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Basu argued that while govts could lay the foundation, it was often private efforts that pushed athletes across the finish line. "Govts can't nurture everything. Sometimes, private players have to step in," he said.
