Twitter: Breaking the Bird review – how all the hate speech flooded in

It turns out that Mike Judge's supposed sitcom Silicon Valley was a documentary after all. My bad, as the people young and in touch enough with the world to have known this all along may still say.
Twitter: Breaking the Bird is a 75-minute CNN film chronicling the rise, fall and possibly end of the social media site that was launched by a group of eager young things in 2006 amid a widespread belief – at least in the Valley – in the power of the internet to remake the world in radically better ways. This, a co-founder or two has come to consider since, may have been a 'hallucinogenically optimistic' view. Well, we were all young once. Although that feels – and in no small measure because of Twitter – like a very long time ago.
The original gang comprised Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass. Dorsey, who became Twitter's first CEO, came up with the idea of letting the site enable users to update each other on their thoughts, doings and feelings in real time. 'Microblogging' is the word I remember being bandied about at the time, although it is not used here. Maybe no one knows what blogging was any more. (It was long-form Twitter. Does that help?)
Twitter exploded in popularity, in part because celebrities were attracted to its immediacy and the apparent clarity of interaction it offered. Politicians flocked there, too, once its soft but extraordinary power began to become apparent, then activists, along with ever-growing numbers of ordinary users.
The only problem was that the site was – please allow me to summarise some of the technical terms here – a piece of rubbish. These were the 'fail whale' years: whenever the site crashed, an apologetic message would come on screen accompanied by the image of a blue whale being lifted by many, many little Twitter birds. 'It was the loudest platform and the saddest little business,' says the tech journalist Kara Swisher. Dorsey was ousted as CEO, the rest of the co-founders were pushed or walked and a new boss, Dick Costolo, ordered a rebuild from the ground up.
Five years later, he restored Dorsey – and his unwavering belief in free speech – to the throne. At first, as Twitter became instrumental in popularising theBlack Lives Matter movement, Dorsey's belief in his creation as a democratising, liberalising force seemed justified. You will never guess what, though. It didn't last.
Del Harvey was the woman the boys had reluctantly appointed in the early days to deal with online abuse. She saw the pitfalls of an unthinking commitment to free speech. As Twitter's former engineering manager Leslie Miley puts it: 'It's not just a naive philosophy; it's a privileged philosophy.' Harvey had argued from the beginning for various tools and protections, but – I hope you are sitting down – wasn't taken seriously.
Hate speech of all kinds, especially misogynistic, flooded in. Then, in 2016, Trump arrived. He commanded attention and drove engagement, but his vitriolic posts legitimised others. Debate raged. Should he be banned? Should other users be banned? Should more posts be taken down? Does free speech mean freedom from consequences? Dorsey preferred to, as Swisher puts it, 'go stare at a finch in Sri Lanka' than evolve a more sophisticated policy.
Mounting issues meant 'Twitter stopped being fun' for Dorsey, according to one of his team. He resigned as CEO and sold the company to Elon Musk – 'the singular solution I trust', apparently because of the billionaire's commitment to unfettered freedom of speech. X, as Musk rebranded the site, is now a hellscape.
Twitter: Breaking the Bird is a compelling tale – albeit told without flair – of how idealism and ignorance, willed and unwilled, combined to bring down a potential empire. It is an illustration of the profound difficulties we will face if we continue to let young, confident, unformed and uninformed men shape and rule the internet – which is to say our society – without making them look at what they are doing and examine the consequences.
Although it isn't asked explicitly, one question underlies every scene: has the internet made us monstrous, or given free rein to what was always there? Put another way, when we look at the hellscape, are we looking at the worst of humanity – a self-selecting group of horrors, unrepresentative of the whole – or the essence of it?
Answers come there none. I may just look at a finch in Sri Lanka for a while.

Taking to X, formally known as Twitter, viewers have been theorising that a public vote could be coming, finally giving fans the power to decide who stays and who goes. One fan penned: "They're recoupling then we vote for least compatible #LoveIsland," as another speculated: "It shouldn't have ended on a cliffhanger but probably means the aftermath of recoupling is chaos #LoveIsland." A third agreed, writing: "Noooo, that recoupling is going to be juicy #loveisland." While a third said: "I bet there would be a recoupling and public vote." Another suspicious fan chimed in, saying: "somethings fishy about this recoupling......#LoveIslandUK #loveisland." With another eagle eyed fan, predicting: "Is there an equal amount of girls or boys? I'm assuming the public vote tomorrow then #loveisland." ‌ The shock recoupling followed another drama-filled day in the villa, with a game being the source of the tension. The Islanders spent the afternoon playing a brutal game of spin the bottle. The Islanders found themselves switching partners frequently, as they faced a series of truths and dares. Tensions rose when Helena landed on a dare and Dejon dared her to kiss the islander she'd choose to recouple with. Without hesitation she kissed new bombshell Harrison - a move which turned heads. ‌ The drama didn't stop there, as Helena was visibly stunned when Shea was asked to give a one-word description of each islander - using the word 'mug' to describe her, following Harry's recent actions towards her. Things got even more complicated, when Megan pulled a truth card and was asked by Harry how she really felt about Conor - following the revelation that Conor had feelings for Megan, despite her being happily coupled with Tommy. Megan revealed that she and Connor had "unfinished business" from the first couple of days, much to Tommy and Emily, who is currently coupled up with Conor. Could this spark something new between Conor and Megan? And who will Megan choose to recouple with in tonight's recoupling?

Gig-goers were beside themselves as he walked on stage in Paris for night two, the closing night of her short European leg of the Cowboy Carter tour. The French capital has been dubbed Queen B's 'favourite city' by fans as she brought out Miley Cyrus for a guest performance of II Most Wanted days before. Jay-Z rapped his part of Crazy In Love before his wife walked off stage and left him to perform his iconic track N****s in Paris — a collaboration with Kanye West — solo. The 55-year-old rapper didn't miss a beat as he burst into the track from their 2011 album,Watch the Throne. However, he did alter one lyric to omit Ye's name from the song, singing 'Just might let you meet Bey' instead. While it may be a happy coincidence that Bey's name fits nicely in the track, Jay-Z — real name Shawn Carter — appears to no longer be friends with his close collaborator. The Gold Digger rapper has been behaving erratically over the past few years, having declared he was a 'nazi' before retracting that statement. Ye, 48, claimed the falling out was sparked by Jay-Z's involvement with 2021 album Donda on the song Jail. 'Why did Jay Z have to say 'no red hat' on Jail,' he said on X in a now-deleted post. 'That s*** tore me to my soul. We fought about it and he told me either leave that line on there or take my verse off. Me wearing the red hat was the most stand out example of me going against 'the program.' Do you guys think he was instructed to say that?' The 'red hat' is thought to refer to Ye's endorsement of Donald Trump and his MAGA hats in the former reality star's first presidential election run. Later, Ye posted a string of messages on X aimed at the Carters, which included questioning the mental capabilities of their seven-year-old child. Insiders claimed the family was looking into taking legal action before Ye removed the post. He made sure to tell everyone it was not removed to be 'a good person.' 'I need everyone to know that I took the post about Jay Z and Beyoncé's family down … because there was a possibility of my Twitter being cancelled [sic],' he wrote. A source told Page Six at the time that the Roc Nation founder 'will absolutely not stand' for the way Ye 'has spoken about their children.' Beyonce and Jay-Z have never publicly addressed the rift, choosing instead to put on these huge displays of family unity, like in Paris. More Trending Of course, Blue Ivy was also at the tour as she has become one of her mum's main featured dancers at just 13 years old. Paris was actually the city where the youngster made her first on stage appearance during the 2023 Renaissance Tour, showing off those now-famous dance moves. Little Rumi, seven, has also been making an appearance on the Cowboy Carter Tour, although her twin brother Sir is staying out of the spotlight. The shock appearance marked the couple's first time performing together in seven years and fans went wild. ‌ Beyoncé and Jay Z then performed a musical mash-up of 2013's Drunk in Love, Partition and N***** in Paris - a song which Jay Z and Kanye West originally sang together. ‌ However, fans were quick to spot that Jay Z had changed the lyrics to the song to cut out 'Ye', and referred to his wife 'Bey' instead amid his old friend's vile public outbursts. During the live rendition of the song, Jay Z switched up the lyrics, rapping: 'Gold bottles, scold models, Spillin' Ace on my sick J's. (Ball so hard) B***h, behave. Just might let you meet Bey'. The change of name didn't go unnoticed by fans who quickly shared their thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter. One person wrote: 'JAYZ changing the lyrics to 'I just might let u meet bey'', while another added: 'After the way Kanye talked about his kids .jay is done with ye for good''. Another fan pointed out: 'You see he's over Kanye & his mess he changed the lyrics'. It follows claims Beyoncé and Jay-Z were considering taking legal action against the rapper after he shared controversial tweets about Jay-Z and Beyoncé's youngest children, Rumi and Sir. ‌ Kanye used highly offensive language to question the mental capacities of their children, and a source claimed that Jay-Z and Beyoncé were discussing 'how to handle the situation' as Jay-Z will 'not stand' for the comments. A source told Page Six: '[They are] discussing how they want to handle this situation, whether that be privately and/or in a legal matter.' They stressed that Jay-Z 'will absolutely not stand for' how Kane 'has spoken about their children', and that the couple found the comments 'vulgar and offensive' The final Cowboy Carter concert in Paris comes after the news Blue Ivy wants to follow in her superstar mum's footsteps and start releasing her own music. An insider told the Daily Mail that the teenager 'is considering starting her own career in music' and that some of 'Beyoncé's favourite writers' are already working on some demos for her.
