University softball bows out of 2025 state tournament with 5-1 defeat to Jefferson

Dominion Post31-05-2025

SOUTH CHARLESTON – The University High School softball team saw its 2025 season come to a close in the WVSSAC state softball tournament at Little Creek Park on Saturday morning with a 5-1 defeat to Jefferson in an elimination game to kick off Day 2 of action.
The Cougars used a strong outing in the circle from Jersey Rummel and some sound defense behind her to stifle the Hawks' normally potent offense and earn their way into the Class AAAA championship series later this afternoon against Cabell Midland.
'We just didn't get the hits we needed when we needed them,' MHS head coach Mindy Parks said. 'It was a very situational game, and things just didn't go our way. It happens that way sometimes, and we know that.'
Eight hits yielded only one run as the Hawks stranded eight runners on base. Three of those hits came in the top of the first inning as it seemed UHS had momentum early, loading the bases with only one out.
Lexi Elza hit a bouncer to the pitcher that allowed Maddie Campbell to score the game's opening run, but the Hawks wouldn't cross the plate again in the contest.
A four-run third inning gave Jefferson the boost it needed to take control and never look back in a key postseason matchup against University High School.
The Cougars strung together five consecutive hits to open the third, starting with a run-scoring double from Brooke Allen. Grace Dodson and Savannah Smith followed with RBI singles, and Caroline Abe capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to center, giving Jefferson a 4–1 lead.
From that point on, Rummel settled in, allowing just one hit per inning from the second through the sixth. With a comfortable lead behind her, she pitched confidently, trusting her defense.
Jefferson added another run in the sixth when Ainsley Phillips led off with a triple and scored on Madison Clark's double, giving Rummel a four-run cushion to finish the final two frames.
The Cougars finished with 13 hits, led by Allen, who went 3-for-4. Rummel, Smith, and Clark each had two hits.
For UHS, Sophia Lehosit allowed four runs over two innings, while Maddie Campbell delivered five strong innings in relief, giving up just one run on five hits.
University High, last year's Class AAA state champion, ended the season 24-7-1. A tough 6–5 loss to Cabell Midland on Friday night pushed them into the losers' bracket, making their path back to the title an uphill battle.
'We know what it's like to be in the winner's bracket, and we said last night this is going to be hard,' said head coach Parks. 'We didn't get in bed until midnight, and then we're up early, but that's just part of the game. Yesterday was a very long day for everybody.'
UHS will say goodbye to a lone senior in Kelsey Park, whose impact will be missed, but will return key players on the team next season as the Hawks aim to return to Little Creek Park to fight for a state championship.
'We'll be back,' Parks said. 'I'm confident in that. These girls will be hungry next season.

Three takeaways: LSU baseball beats Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the CWS final

LSU baseball earned a slim 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday to open the best-of-three College World Series finals on Saturday night. Inside Omaha's Charles Schwab Stadium, left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson led the Tigers to victory with his second complete game shutout of 2025. Using 130 pitches, he racked up 10 strikeouts. The game's lone run game in the bottom of the first inning. Steven Milam roped an RBI single to center field with one out to score Derek Curiel. It was one of six hits for LSU, but pitching from both dugouts dominated the rest of the way. Coastal Carolina got runners on base often early but couldn't take advantage of three hits and five free passes issued by Anderson. The southpaw remained strong throughout his final game for the Tigers, sticking with his breaking pitches when his fastball couldn't find the strike zone. LSU baseball will return to action in Game 2 on Sunday, looking to clinch the national title. Here are three takeaways from LSU's win over Coastal Carolina in game one of the College World Series finals. Bullpen gets much-needed rest day Anderson's complete game shutout kept the entire bullpen available for Sunday's contest. Relievers such as Chase Shores, Cooper Williams, and Jacob Mayers will have another day of rest heading into what could be the final game of the season. Top relief arms Casan Evans and Zac Cowan also get another day of rest after getting starter-level work in the College World Series. Outside of Anderson and Anthony Eyanson, Evans and Cowan are LSU's best arms. Getting another full day of rest was key for both and puts LSU in a great position for Game 2, and if needed, a Game 3. LSU could use Evans or Cowan out of the pen on Saturday and still have one left to start Game 3 if needed. Milam's clutch-hitting continues Milam racked up 13 RBI throughout the 2025 NCAA Tournament, including the lone run of Saturday's contest. The shortstop also batted in four runs apiece in each game of the Baton Rouge Super Regional against West Virginia. Much of LSU's lineup has been inconsistent this postseason, but Milam continues to deliver quality at-bats, come through in the clutch, and be the glue that holds this group together. The sophomore has peaked at the best time possible and will look to replicate that success on Sunday. Defense plays large role In a game decided by the thinnest margin, LSU made no errors while dealing with nine ground balls off the bats of Chanticleers' hitters. On a windy evening in Omaha, the Tigers caught seven fly balls. Michael Braswell flashed the leather multiple times at the hot corner, firing across the diamond to Jared Jones at first base. Daniel Dickinson made tough grabs at second base as well. There was also this key moment in the top of the third. With two runners on, Coastal Sebastian Alexander tried to steal third. He beat the throw, but Braswell kept the glove on and nailed Alexander off the bag to end the inning and the CCU rally.

Promising Texas A&M infielder confirms return to College Station for sophomore season

Texas A&M baseball head coach Michael Earley retained another promising infielder for next year's club, as the No. 3 shortstop in Texas from the 2024 class is reportedly returning for his sophomore season in College Station. According to TexAgs analyst Ryan Brauninger, Fort Worth native Sawyer Farr confirmed he will gear up for the Aggies in 2026. He made 31 starts in 39 appearances with 15 hits, including a triple, 17 walks and four RBI. The announcement from Farr will provide Earley with another up-and-comer who has the potential to become a superstar for the Aggies baseball program. Perfect Game USA ranked the 6-foot-4-inch shortstop as the No. 17 prospect at his position and the No. 67 overall player in the country from his class. Although the opportunity was there for Farr to go pro and potentially sign with a Major League Baseball franchise, he signed with the Aggies. Heading into the 2025 campaign, the freshman joined fellow teammate and outfielder Terrence Kiel II as the two Aggies to make Perfect Game USA's Top 75 Freshman list. According to the outlet's evaluation of Farr during Texas A&M's fall ball in 2024, he showed promise from both sides of the plate entering his first season in Aggieland. "Armed with real switch hit juice, true freshman Sawyer Farr, hit some balls extremely hard in looks and got some good starts at second base, though the frame and athlete may move him to the left side of the dirt long term." Both Farr and Kiel are now officially returning for their sophomore seasons in the Maroon and White uniform, which provides Earley's club with speed on the basepath and consistent hitting at the plate if they reach their full potential. Farr's announcement on Saturday night continues to grow the flame that the Aggies are trying to build back as preparations begin for offseason work in College Station.
