Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka HC seeks sealed status report from state government
The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ordered the state government to submit, in a sealed cover, its status report on the stampede in Bengaluru, The Indian Express reported.
Eleven persons were killed and more than 50 were injured on June 4 in the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where fans had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the Indian Premier League and welcome the team.
On June 5, the court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued a notice to the Congress government in the state. It also sought a status report from the Karnataka government.
The suo motu petition and three other related pleas were heard by Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice CM Joshi on Tuesday, the Hindustan Times reported.
During the hearing, Karnataka Advocate General KM Shashikiran Shetty told the court that the government would not like to place information on probe findings in the public domain while the judicial inquiry is underway, The Indian Express reported.
Shetty also submitted that a judicial commission has been formed to investigate the incident, PTI reported. The commission has to submit its findings within a month.
Shetty added that police officers were also suspended over the stampede.
The court will hear the matter again on Thursday.
On June 5, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and several police officers. He had also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
On Friday, the Karnataka Police arrested Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, along with event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks' Sunil Mathew, Kiran and Sumanth in connection with the stampede.
This came hours after Siddaramaiah said that the state government had ordered the arrest of representatives from the Karnataka State Cricket Association, DNA Entertainment Networks and Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the stampede.
On Monday, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and DNA Entertainment Networks filed separate petitions in the court seeking to quash the criminal case filed against them after the incident, according to The Indian Express.

Minister writes to CM on apathy over illegal mining cases
Bengaluru/Raichur: Law Minister H K Patil on Saturday said he had written a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressing concerns over administration apathy towards taking illegal mining cases in the state to a logical end. He also wanted the culprits to be punished, and the lost wealth recovered. The senior minister, who is also in-charge of Parliamentary Affairs, has written a seven-page letter dated June 18, pointing out that only 7.6 per cent of all the cases related to illegal mining that allegedly took place between 2007 and 2011 leading to the loss of an estimated Rs 1.5 lakh crore to the government, have been investigated so far. In the letter he noted that there is outrage among people that the government has not shown honesty and commitment in its efforts towards ensuring commensurate punishments and recovery of the state's wealth, despite such a large-scale loot. He also reminded Siddaramaiah that he had led a 320-km foot march to Ballari against the illegal mining scam in 2010, when the Congress was in opposition. Patil had headed the Cabinet sub-committee, during the first Siddaramaiah-led Congress government (2013-18), which had brought the extent of loss caused by illegal mining. In Raichur, replying to questions by reporters regarding the letter, Patil said, '...I have brought it to the notice of the chief minister what has to be done, thereby it has to serve the state and the government has to get a good name, so the letter has been written. It is not a political letter. It is written in the interest of the state and its people. The CM has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously.' Asked whether he is suspicious that documents on illegalities may be destroyed, he said with the intention that such things should not happen. He has cautioned the administration and the concerned department. Noting that the Congress party has done a padayatre (foot march) against illegal mining fifteen years ago, the minister said, despite so many years and inspite of cabinet sub-committee under 2013-18 Siddaramaiah-led Congress government submitting a report about the quantum of loss, the action taken is not satisfactory. 'Out of more than 12,000 illegal mining cases being registered, only about 7 per cent have been investigated. In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion,' he said. Asserting that a logical end has to be given to all these pending cases, Patil said the government lost Rs 1.5 lakh crore because of illegal mining, and with the intention that serious steps are taken in this regard, he has written a letter to the CM. He said nine cases were handed over for the CBI probe. They said they will probe only three among them and sent back the remaining six. Similarly, the cases that were referred to the Special investigation Team (SIT), most of them have still not been subjected to probe. 'So I have written the letter.' Patil, in his letter, has said that the government can still act as there is still time. Asking the government to take all the necessary measures, he suggested appointing a Recovery Commissioner as per the provisions of the Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance, 1946. He has also sought the creation of a new SIT to take up investigation of cases that have not been probed, and setting up a special court to try these cases.

Policeman dies in accident on Delhi-Jaipur highway
Delhi Police Head Constable Ashok Kumar (39) was killed in an accident on Saturday morning after the state transport bus he was travelling on overturned on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. The bus was on its way to Jaipur when the accident took place. According to Sub-Inspector Birender Singh of the Bilaspur Police Station, the bus was ferrying several passengers when it braked and swerved to avoid a WagonR near Panchgaon Chowk. 'The incident took place around 9.30 am. The bus was going at a significant speed… the driver saw the car and hit the brakes, but the vehicle went out of control and overturned,' Singh told The Indian Express. The injured, including the bus driver, conductor and children, have been admitted to different hospitals with critical injuries. 'We do not have details of the total number of passengers and those injured, or where they are all being treated yet. An FIR (against the driver) is likely but, for that, the medico-legal reports as well as statements/complaints have to come from one of the injured,' said the officer. Kumar hailed from Molawas village in Alwar district. A brother of the policeman said he has two children, a boy and a girl. He said he was supposed to be taking his daughter as well on the bus, but decided against it as he was getting late and sent her home. Earlier this month, a 24-year-old from Rajasthan lost his life in an accident on the same national highway. Sumit Meena and his four friends, all from Rajasthan, were travelling from Alwar to Delhi in a Hyundai i20 on June 11 when their vehicle met with an accident near Mannat Hotel at Sidhravali around 3.30 am. As per a complaint filed by Kamal Singh Meena, Sumit's father, at the Bilaspur police station, the vehicle was driven by Sumit's friend when it collided with an unidentified large vehicle. Ex-MP demands public apology, files defamation suit against author for ‘damaging claims' in book
As political parties gear up for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, a legal controversy has emerged involving author Mrityunjay Sharma and former MP Sadhu Yadav. Sharma, who wrote the book 'Broken Promises', has received a `5 crore defamation notice from Sadhu Yadav, the brother-in-law of RJD chief Lalu Prasad. The notice, served by a law firm on behalf of Yadav on June 18, accused Sharma of making damaging claims in his book and recent podcast interviews. It demanded a public apology and withdrawal of certain references made in the book and online interviews. On Saturday, Sharma told The Indian Express that the book, released last year, is entirely based on verifiable sources and not personal opinions. He said, 'I'm definitely not going to apologise for something that's based on facts and evidence. If they are not ashamed of doing these things, why should I be ashamed of writing about them?' 'Every line is referenced. There's no imagination or speculation involved,' he said. 'Two days ago, I received the legal notice. It asked me to apologise or face hefty fines. I've decided to make the entire matter public, because people should know what kind of person he is,' he said. Sharma had shared the legal notice and his public response on X. According to Sharma, the defamation notice objects to three references in his book — the Shilpi-Gautam murder case, a looting incident during Rohini Acharya's wedding, and a violent protest episode outside Bihar Bhavan in Delhi. The author, who is also known for his widely circulated political podcasts, said he is prepared to defend himself in court if necessary. 'If they move to court, I will fight it. There's no question of a private settlement or backdoor apology. I have a huge volume of source material to prove every line I've written,' he said. Asked if Yadav contacted him, Sharma said, 'He did call me a couple of months ago, but it wasn't threatening in nature. That's why I didn't mention it in my original post.
